The 4th largest ethnic group is Kanuri. They are dominant in Borno, Yobe and found in considerable numbers in Jigawa, Adamawa and Nassarawa.

They are some yoruba affiliate ethnic groups in Edo state for your information. They are called akoko edo.... they bare yoruba names and also some communities before okada township that are of yoruba kinship I can't remember the name but I have met with them. So don't allow ignorance blind you my dear.

The yoruba race is the largest in Nigeria.... that extends from the south to the north. No other tribe have such expense....
haaay bros, bearing yoruba names does't mean anything, anybody can bear any name he likes, now let me educate u a bit, Akoko Edo some of dem bear yoruba names but there language is not yoruba at all, OWAN some of dem bear yoruba name but their language is not yoruba at all, now we ve IJAGBA in ondo state but they speak edo 'owan' precisely, now we ve d IGBANKE'S they clasify them as edo igbo but their language is not igbo at all just like akoko edo they clasify as edo yoruba. I listened to a program on TV (I believe AIT) which listed TIV as the fourth largest group.

Wikipedia says they number over 13million. I doubt this figure though, cus this would make them even larger than Igbos

Another source puts the figure at about 6 million. I think this more realistic: https://www.scribd.com/doc/54862764/Tiv-People

The Igbo is less than 13million? Who taught you that? That's nonsense.

It was also on AIT that I heard them being mentioned as the fourth largest ethnic group. Although it was a news report on a press conference by a Tiv group condemning the targeted removals of prominent Tiv sons and daughters from government positions at the federal level.

I am yoruba from Kogi state. My dialect is quite different from the core yoruba language. I bare both yoruba names and surname. Our languages are different but we share a common heritage (cultural values) that is noticeable in our names. In this part of the world there is so much attached to names that u can ever know. It's one of the few evidence that we share similar heritage. My language is very similar to itsekiri....

There is a township within the boundaries of Edo state just after Ore in Ondo state. I can't remember the name but their version of yoruba is quite similar to mine also. The township is before okada when coming from Ore road..... I have been there on one occasion.

Whether you like it or not..... The yoruba heritage extends to some parts of the south south..... it's quite unfortunate we don't have monunental historical records other than the names we bare in our respective society.

well for southern Nigeria, the igbos are the single largest ethnic group, followed by yoruba..

Ijaws are not in any way the 4th largest. it is between the tivs, kanuri or fulani.

Have you ever wondered why the igbos are so numerous outside their home land constituting the largest Nigerian ethnic diaspora in any city/country in the world except maybe in london where there are as much yorubas if not more than the igbo. Go to any major city in Nigeria/Africa, the igbo populations in such cities are usually numerous, from lagos, to abuja, to kano, to ibadan to ilorin to makurdi, to warri, to benin to yenagoa to minna, to dutse to yola, to Accra to Lome, to Abidjan to Cotonou to Nairobi, to Johannesburg to Cairo they are just everywhere in Multitude numbers..

Now this is it, read this

It has been stated that the Sudanese constitute the majority of the people of southern Nigeria, with a total population (1921 census) of about 7,000,000. More than half of these are Ibo and about one-third are Yoruba. Population figures(1921) for the principal Sudanese groups are given in Table1.3

Table 1.3

Group population

Edo 472,000
Ibo 3,927,000
Ijaw 174,000
Popo Ewe 39,000
Yoruba 2,113,000
'Others' 34,000

The ibo have long been regarded as culturally homogeous the inhabit the most densely populated region of trans-Saharan Africa, have no tradition of migration from elsewhere, and appear to have settled in the thickly inhabited part of Nri-Awka and Isu-Ama areas for a very long period and to have spread out from there, their main expansion being southward, south-eastward, and eastward to the Cross River. They live on what was once forest land. The northern ibo area was originally forest, although it is now grassland, but even here the village settlements lie among plam trees and degenerate forest which, protected from annual burning, has grown up around them in the course of the centuries.
Ibo political organization resemble that of the semi-bantu speaking groups of the Eastern Province. There are no chiefs or heads of village or larger groups, and no kingdoms or large city-dwelling communities as are found amongst the yoruba to the west of the Niger. Their environment and their numbers have protected them from attacks from outside have allowed them to concentrate almost exclusively on agriculture and trade.

Kanuri are the 4th largest tribe in Nigeria.

If Edo state is regarded as south south, then a significant population of that state is Yoruba's.

now check out the fulani population in 1921

Like the Hausa, the nomad fulani are found in greatest strength in Kano(1,112,000) and sokoto(367,000), with some 250,000 in Bauchi. Their total population (1921) is about 2,000,000. Only one other groups from the northern province, the kanuri, is included in the survey.

Right from primary school when we were small children we've been taught and it has become a part of our subconscious that there are 3 major ethnic groups in Nigeria- Hausa-Fulani, Igbo and Yoruba. This is a common knowledge among most Nigerians young or old. These 3 ethnic groups are spread across more than one region for example Hausa-Fulani can be found in the Northeast, Northwest and the North-central, the Igbos can be found in the Southeast and South-south while the Yorubas can be found in the Southwest, South-south and the North-central.
However apart from these 3 major ethnic groups, there are over 200 other ethnic groups in Nigeria. Some in their millions while some others are just a few thousands. One knowledge that has always seem elusive is that of the 4th largest ethnic group in the country. Consequently, my academic readings online and in hard copies as well as news items have thrust before me the possibility of 4 candidates; Ijaw, Urhobo, Tiv and Itsekiri. I don't really know the population strength of these ethnic groups because different media and academic reports have mentioned them as being the 4th largest ethnic group in Nigeria.
This is the major reason for bringing this question here to gain more knowledge. Which ethnic group is the 4th largest in Nigeria.

Igbos can be found in South-East, South-South and North-Central ( the people of Ezza, Izzi and Effium in Benue state) and the Onitsha-Ado people in Kogi state, an Igbo is the deputy govnr of Kogi state... FACT.

bro please is it the number of states where you find them or their number in those states..

i am aware that their largest state is bayelsa and some say bayelsa is not homogeneously ijaw..

In delta, the urhobo are the largest followed by Aniomas.

In Edo, Ondo, their population in those states are very insignificant, am not sure of the number of local government they control.. educated me on it if you know.

I dont believe that lagos crap..they are in lagos but as migrant fishermen who live on water and have inhabited those places for long. if at all we want to assume they are indigenous to lagos, i doubt the control a ward not to even talk of a local government. other migrant ethnic groups in lagos even have more people in lagos than the lagos ijaws(just to assume the exist in lagos)

In rivers, the igboid groups are more than 65-70% in rivers state, leaving the remaining 30% to be share between the remain groups
