Nigeria has hundreds of refineries but they have not been well managed because the fuel importers sabotaged them.

Nigeria has a ot of super market chains that are bigger than Shoprite within Nigeria as well.

MTN is just one telecom company, Nigeria has Glo, Etisalat, Airtel, and by the way Nigerians hold majority share in MTN so calling it out right a South African business in Nigeria may be wrong, MTN in Nigeria is not wholly owned by South Africans.
MTN is 21% owned by Nigerians,Please stop the lies.In fact the stake was 18% before Shanduka came in so Yes.MTN IS A SOUTH AFRICAN BUSINESS SINCE THEY OWN 79% OF MTN NIGERIA!!!!http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/business/many-people-refused-offers-to-invest-in-mtn-nigeria-pascal-dozie/108473.html
The only Nigerian telcom is Glo. Airtel and Etisalat are all foreign.
On the other hand Safaricom IS A KENYAN company as 60% is owned by Kenyans(35% Government of Kenya 25% Nairobi Stock Exchange) AND 40%Vodafone.
Telkom Kenya's Orange is 51% owned by Helios(UK) and 49% by the Government of Kenya. The Government of Kenya continues to exercise excess control over Telkom (which is why France Telcom sold its shares) due to its past as a Parastatal.
Only Airtel is foreign

so what is your argument now? that the EAC is more influential than ECOWAS. If you must know, ECOWAS has offices in both Kenya and Ethiopia.

Also consider that Nigeria has the highest number of rich black folks on forbes list. Keyword black.

Nigeria has some shitty hospitals but I assure you, Kenya has more shitty hospitals than Nigeria.

Wikipedia? lol

That Nigeria is growing is no secret and it's actually a good thing. What you fail to realize is that the whole of Africa is growing. Nigeria having a larger population will definitely have the biggest economy on the continent but remember a big economy does no automatically mean dominance. Nigeria merely having a bigger economy doesn't mean it's going to be a big brother to the rest of Africa - the obvious reason is, Nigeria has a much lower living standard than many African countries and is in no position to control them. Botswana has a much smaller economy than you but what is the probability of you guys helping Botswana in any way? Botswana is safer than Nigeria, has better medical and academic facilities, has better planned cleaner cities, has less poverty, is better run and better than Nigeria in almost everything apart from the size of the economy so no, Nigeria is not the giant of Africa. I can bring you several statistics ranking Kenya as a continental leader in ICT, Real Estate etc but at no point would you here me claim Kenya is Africa's giant due to that.
Nigeria is growing..... HOLD UP!!Isn't your country in a recession after ikeja electricity strikes, forex scarcity, and now in a recession to the point where the state is selling off assents??
Kenya is set to exceed 6% in growth this year. No Recession here!!

Now you are just begging to be insulted.

Nigeria's army has the most versatile land force there is in the sub sahara, with conflict experience as far as South Sudan helping the UN during the Darfur crisis. Ended 2 civil wars (Sierra Leone and Liberia), Angola Civil War experience too.

Honestly you are not arguing any more, you are just hating.
So you ended two civil wars in Liberia and Sierra Leone yet for long periods you haven't even smoked out BH and Niger Delta militants in your own backyard?

Oh please tell better lies than that cuz you now have Cameroon,Chad,Niger and even USA helping you deal with Boko Haram.

I don't see any Cameroon,Chad,Niger or US soldiers stationed in Nigeria so what exactly do you mean?

The NE where Boko Haram occupied is now largely stable due to the hard work and sacrifice of Nigerian Army in Nigeria and there is video of their hard work too. Stop making foolish assertions from random google searches.

Telling me a Runda can be found in Ibadan is being disrespectful to Runda. Maybe South B. See, look at google images - a random google image of Nakuru is better than anywhere in Ibadan, I am actually going through google maps to find a decent place in Ibadan but it's all in vain. Below is the most decent image of Ibadan I found.........below it is an image of Runda. You can give us a better image if you think I'm beng unfair to Ibadan. You would honestly have to be a special kind of patriot to claim Ibadan has an equivalent of Runda. The first two are of the best image of Ibadan I got and the next two are of Runda.

I wonder how on earth things that countries as poor and tiny as Burundi do all the time makes you think Nigeria is King when you do them. If you've been in Kenya long enough perhaps you've heard of the saying "Maji ya kifuu bahari ya chungu" - a pebble of water is an ocean to an ant. The things you seem to find great are so ordinary to the rest of us.

giANT of Africa vs "Ordinary" Kenya

Fact 1- Infrastructure
ROADS
NIGERIA- 923,768 sq. km
-The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Raji Fahola (SAN), lamented the poor infrastructural deficit in the country, saying that the country only constructed about 28,980km out of the 193,200km total length of her road network since 55 years of its independence.
KENYA -11,230 sq km
-According to the Kenya Roads Board, Kenya has 160,886 kilometres of roads. 13,900 kilometres of this are tarmacked.

Conclusion is while Nigeria is 90 times the size of Kenya, Kenya has a wider coverage of tarmacked roads than Nigeria by 2015. Kenya is in the process of finishing 8000 km of tarmacked roads by 2017 to its existing 13,900km to make it 22,000km. Nigerias ratio of tarmacked roads to countries size compared to kenya falls short to 1:100. KENYA TAKES THE CROWN IN ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE.

Fact 2
AIR TRANSPORT

NIGERIA- Population-173m
Nigeria’s principal airports are Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. Three other international airports are Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano, Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu and Port Harcourt International Airport in Port Harcourt. Overall, Nigeria’s airports, whether international or regional, suffer from a poor reputation for operational efficiency and safety. Private domestic air carriers began to win business at the expense of Nigeria Airways, the former government-owned national airline which was declared bankrupt in 2004. The national flag carrier of Nigeria was Air Nigeria, in which Virgin Atlantic owns 49% and the remaining 51% by Nigerian investors until Virgin withdrew from the partnership on September 18, 2009. The national flag carrier then became Air Nigeria which suspended operations in 2012. Arik Air is now a large airline serving Nigeria and has transported over 10 million passengers.

KENYA- Population-44m
Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, is Kenya's largest airport and serves the most destinations. Some international flights go to Moi International Airport in Mombasa. Kisumu Airport was upgraded to an international airport in 2011 and a second phase of expansion is under way. In 2012, US Navy Seebees built a major new tarmac runway at Wajir Airport that can take heavy aircraft.
Kenya Airways Ltd., more commonly known as Kenya Airways, is the flag carrier of Kenya.[4] The company was founded in 1977, after the dissolution of East African Airways. The carrier's head office is located in Embakasi, Nairobi,[5] with its hub at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.[6]

The airline was wholly owned by the Government of Kenya until April 1995, and it was privatised in 1996, becoming the first African flag carrier to successfully do so.[7] Kenya Airways is currently a public-private partnership. The largest shareholder is the Government of Kenya (29.8.%), followed by KLM, which has a 26.73% stake in the company. The rest of the shares are held by private owners; shares are traded on the Nairobi Stock Exchange, the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange, and the Uganda Securities Exchange.[7][8]

Kenya Airways is considered one of the leading Sub-Saharan operators;[9] as of January 2013 and was ranked fourth among the top ten African airlines by seat capacity, behind South African Airways, Ethiopian Airlines and EgyptAir.[10] The airline became a full member of SkyTeam in June 2010, and is also a member of the African Airlines Association since 1977.
They have local domestic flights which include Jetlink, Fly540, KQ and Jambo jet.

Conclusions: Kenya has a more vibrant air transport with 1 international carrier and 4 domestic carriers serving a population of 44m. Kenya airspace enjoys different flight carriers from other reputable airlines.
Nigeria lags behind in Air transport
KENYA WINS AGAIN.

Fact 3
PORT SERVICES

NIGERIA- Handling capacity-5.75 million tons
The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) is responsible for managing Nigeria’s ports, some of which have fallen behind international standards in terms of the quality of facilities and operational efficiency. Recognizing that the government lacks the funding and expertise to modernize facilities and run the ports efficiently, the NPA is pursuing partial port privatization by means of granting concessions to private port operators. Under the terms of concession agreements, the government would transfer operating rights to private companies for a finite number of years without forgoing ownership of the port land. Nigeria’s principal container port is the port of Lagos, which handles about 5.75 million tons of cargo each year. The port, which consists of separate facilities at Apapa and Tin Can Island, has a rail connection to points inland. Port Harcourt, a transshipment port located 66 kilometers from the Gulf of Guinea along the Bonny River in the Niger Delta, handles about 815,000 tons of cargo each year and also has a railway connection. Both ports are not only responsible for Nigeria’s seaborne trade but also serve inland countries such as Niger and Chad. A new port is under construction at Onne about 25 kilometers south of Port Harcourt. Relatively modern and efficient terminals managed by multinational oil companies handle most oil and gas exports.

KENYA- Handling capacity- 8.5m tons
Mombasa has the only commercial port that reaches international standards and the second biggest in Africa. Mombasa's commercial port is called Kilindini Harbour and is run by the Kenya Ports Authority, it lies on the Indian Ocean. It consists of 19 berths, 2 oil terminals/jetties, 1 bulk grain handling berth and 4 container berths with the capacity to handle 180,000 containers at any given time and 12 general berths for cargo.

There are building another international port in Lamu to the north east of Mombasa.

There is an inland port at Kisumu which serves Lake Victoria serving Kenya exports to Northern Tanzania, Uganda, DR. Congo, Rwanda and Burundi.

All the 3 ports enjoy 100% access via Road and Rail and Air transport. It boasts of the newly constructed SGR(standard gauge railway) that was recently built that can handle both human passengers and cargo.

CONCLUSION- Kenya beats Nigeria in the efficiency, modernisation and handling capacity of its port usage hands down.

Fact 4

NIGERIA- 3,984 kilometers of track

Railways in Nigeria are operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation. Nigeria's rail system has 3,984 kilometers of track, most of which is Cape gauge. The country has two major rail lines: a western line that connects Lagos to Nguru, and an eastern line that connects Port Harcourt to Maiduguri. The Lagos–Kano Standard Gauge Railway is being built in segments to replace the western Cape gauge line.

KENYA- 2,066 metre gauge kilometers of track & Standard gauge 800 kilometers of track
Kenya boasts of two railway tracks, the old and the new modern SGR standard gauge Railway line which is 90% complete.
Kenya-Uganda railway- The former Uganda Railway, was run by the company East African Railways. It jointly served the present countries of Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya. Since the dissolution of the EAR corporation in 1977, the national company Kenya Railways Corporation runs the former Uganda Railway and its branches in Kenya. The most important line in the country runs between the port of Mombasa and Nairobi, sleeping car accommodation is offered for tourists.

In 2006, the Rift Valley Railways Consortium led by South African companies took over the operation of the Kenyan and Ugandan railway network on a contract lasting 25 years, with the opportunity of renewal. After criticism from the Kenya Railways Corporation, RVR doubled the frequency of service, and also imposed restrictions to reduce train derailments caused by the ageing infrastructure.[5]

RVR run passenger trains within Kenya only, primarily from Nairobi to Mombasa but also to local towns such as Kisumu. Passenger services on these lines are offered on peak periods only. Freight services are the bulk of RVR's operations.

In 2008, agreements were made with Uganda about gauge standardisation.
The Mombasa-Nairobi SGR is the biggest infrastructure project in Kenya since independence. It will shorten the passenger travel time from Mombasa to Nairobi from more than ten hours to a little more than four hours. Freight trains will complete the journey in less than eight hours. The Class 1 line will have a superior design catering to robust and low-maintenance requirement. The new line will run parallel to the existing meter gauge railway and the Mombasa-Nairobi Road or A109 Highway for the most part. It will deviate at certain points to attain the desired gradient and curvature. The freight terminals will be located at the Mombasa port and the Inland Container Depots at Embakasi in Nairobi. The railway line is designed to carry 22 million tonnes a year of cargo or a projected 40% of Mombasa Port throughput by 2035.

CONCLUSION- Kenya has a far superior train system compared to the length of the total kilometers of both rail systems. Kenya cant stop winning in this variables.

It isn't strange spotting foreigners of all socioeconomic levels in all parts of the city, hence the need to learn the language. One might think that as a Nigerian I would side with your opponent in this discussion, but I'd actually like to thank you: your posts are factual and informative, and I think you are doing my countrymen a valuable service by opening their eyes to the abysmal levels of mediocrity they've become accustomed to.

It's time more Nigerians got over the "Giant of Africa" nonsense and started opening their eyes to the strides being made elsewhere in the world. Enough of the excuses about how Nigeria is a "special case", or how "the black man" is to blame for our backwardness, when equally black countries like Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya and Rwanda are climbing to new heights of development we can only dream of reaching in our current state. Being number one in population is nothing to boast of when said population is almost destitute, and that is all Nigeria's "gianthood" consists of at this point: what's to cheer about in shitting out kids we can't feed as if we were rabbits?

I never knew this, we learn something new everyday. You mean ordinary Mombasa handles more cargo than all 9ja ports combined? @smoriacy angalia hio data

ThunderingHooves:

explain to me please : i have gone through these posts and am shocked that you have lived for 10 years in kenya (nobody can verify that ) yet you have the most vile things to say about your hosts(who most likely are unaware of your obviously well concealed disdain ) - how does one agree to live in a place where they are so unhappy or otherwise deem inferior to their own domain. Doesn't that affect one's sanity?

I don't hate Kenya or Kenyans.

I just think y'all clearly have issues. Honestly it is easy of make these claims about Nigeria but until you actually live and breathe there, you cannot understand why they call it the giant of the continent. A lot of black nationalities live there and assimilate quite easily without any form of discrimination. In Kenya, you guys are so ethnocentric, Nigeria's ethnocentrism is restricted to online debates, in reality, you rarely hear of one person attacking another based on tribal sentiments.

I also despise the generalization. To Kenyan, every Nigerian deals drugs, every Nigerian is a comedian, in the midst of all that, its hard to not express hate.
