South Africa/Nigeria: South Africa Set to Name Coach for Super Eagles Clash

By Gowon Akpodonor With Agency Reports

After a long wait, the South African Football Association (SAFA) announced yesterday that they have finalised an agreement with the successful candidate and are in the process of formalising the legal arrangements by exchanging signatures.

Former coach Shakes Mashaba, was fired a few months ago.

The Bafana Bafana will travel to Nigeria in June for the 2019 AFCON qualifier against the Super Eagles of Nigeria in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The pronouncement by SAFA yesterday brought to a close a thorough, but lengthy process of seeking a replacement for Mashaba.

The association said they are mindful that the South African public has been waiting with bated breath for this matter to be concluded.

Mashaba was fired with a year still left on his contract, which was to run until the end of the 2018 Russia World Cup in July next year.

He was suspended after Bafana beat Senegal 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier in Polokwane on November 12' when he wagged a finger and angrily remonstrated at Safa officials - including president Danny Jordaan - ahead of his post-match TV interview.

I agree. Pure speculation! However, that might not be a bad idea, especially against a team like Cameroun.

New South Africa Coach Baxter Reveals How His Team Defeated Nigeria In 2004

The South Africa Football Association (SAFA) will in the coming days unveil Stuart Baxter as their new coach ahead of their AFCON 2019 Qualifiers against Nigeria in Uyo.

‎Baxter holds the record of the only coach who have guided South Africa to victory over Nigeria, and he will be eyeing same when his team travel to Uyo on the 10th of June.

The coach will be in charge of South Africa for the game against Nigeria while still in charge of Premier Soccer League side Supersports United, but reports has it that he will quit the club full time at the end of the season.

In 2015, the coach told Africanfootball.com, how he masterminded South Africa to their first and only win over Nigeria in 2004, when his team defeated Nigeria 2-1 in a friendly game.

On 17 November 2004, Baxter’s Bafana Bafana beat the Super Eagles 2-1 with goals by Shaun Bartlett and Benedict Vilakazi in a friendly international.

“We (South Africa) shouldn’t feel inferior to Nigeria. It’s no help looking at their players and seeing which clubs they play for. That is only on paper.

“Before our game in 2004, they were all talking about beating South Africa 4-0 ahead of our game, but we forgot about that and just played our game.

“What South Africa needs to be doing, is not to get worried about past statistics and history. The current players can create their own future and mentally they should just get ready to focus on the job.

“In 2004 it was the same. We wanted to perfect the way we played at that time and when we won the ball, we wanted to get at them quickly and attack.”

Well said. With the way things are going, I don't expect Pep to last at ManCity. I think he would get exposed as an average coach that he really is. He doesn't have Messi, Xavi and Iniesta to carry his water anymore. I have never rated Pep despite everything he won at Barca.

And I said the same thing about Luis Enrique last year, after he had won a triple, but people thought that I was talking nonsense.

During the leadership tussle between Baribote and Owumi, I heard something like club chairmen being the only ones eligible to contest for league chairman or so. Have that been scrapped also?
im not sure totally. but I sense that's about to change. All these fights we seesaw shows some peeps feel bigger than the league.

Odey Eager For FC Midtjylland Deal, Striking-Partnership With Onuachu

By Izuchukwu Okosi:

Leading scorer in the Nigeria Professional Football League with 14 goals, Stephen Odey, on Thursday expressed his optimism to form a lethal partnership with compatriot, Paul Onuachu in the attacking line of Danish club, FC Midtjylland, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

The Mountain of Fire and Miracles FC forward is currently undergoing trials at the 2015 Danish champions, with a view to signing for them in the summer.

The decision of the player to travel to Denmark initially caused trepidation at his club, MFM FC, as they looked to consolidate on their impressive campaign in the NPFL.

However, that disenchantment has been sorted out, and the player while speaking exclusively to Completesportsnigeria.com, revealed one of his expectations at the Danish side for the coming season.

"I am undergoing trials here as everyone knows, and I'm good. There are two Nigerian players at the club, Paul Onuachu and Rilwan Hassan. So I'm in good company," Odey told Completesportsnigeria.com.

"I'm a striker. Hopefully, I will get signed and get to score goals for Midtjylland. Scoring goals is my job. Paul (Onuachu) is a striker here, and together we can form a good partnership.

"Well, Midtjylland have European experience and that is good for a player like me. So, I'm happy to have this opportunity at the club."

FC Midtjylland are involved in the DBU Pokalen (Danish version of the FA Cup) Thursday evening (today) against Brondby with Odey to watch his potential new club from the stands. They're currently third in the Danish Superliga table with 45 points. They will also face Brondby on Sunday in a league game.

Meanwhile, Odey also expressed his readiness to be part of the Super Eagles side that play against South Africa in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in June should Gernot Rohr call him up.

The Eagles are expected to regroup on May 23 in the French island of Corsica where head coach Gernot Rohr will set up a training base before the trip back to Nigeria for the game against the Bafana Bafana.

"Like every other player, I wish to be invited for the match against South Africa, but until then, everyone is focused on club football," he stated.

"I don't know what the plans of the national team coaches are, but if I'm considered for the qualifying match against South Africa, then I have to get back to Nigeria and drop my passport."

4 Key Steps To Improve Super Sand Eagles

Following the Super Sand Eagles' elimination in the group stage of the 2017 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Bahamas, Completesportsnigeria.com's JAMES AGBEREBI highlights FOUR key areas which can improve the team.

1. Need For Nigeria Beach Soccer League

Despite Nigeria's impressive record when it comes to Beach Soccer, especially in Africa, one area that needs serious attention is the introduction of a Beach Soccer League.

The present crop of players in the Super Sand Eagles play the conventional football for different clubs in the Nigerian league.

What this entails is that these players only come together whenever the CAF Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations or the COPA tournament is around the corner.

But with the establishment of a Beach Soccer League, Nigeria will have players who are properly groomed on beach soccer. It will serve as an avenue where players can be monitored on a regular bases and deserving ones getting invitation to the national team.

2. The current Super Sand Eagles Squad Needs Freshening Up

Some of the players in the current Super Sand Eagles have been in the team a long time, unnecessarily.

The trio of skipper Isiaka Olawale, Bartholomew Ibenegbu and Ogbonnaya Okemmiri were in the Sand Eagles squad that made their FIFA World Cup debut in 2006.

Also at the 2007 and 2009 editions, Olawale, Ibenegbu and Okemmiri were in the squad. Azeez Abu and Victor Tale made their World Cup debuts in 2009.

Without trying to force the three veterans out of the team, it is high time, the coaching crew introduce young and hungry players who will move the team to the next level instead of still relying on these three players who have passed their prime.

3. Coaching Crew Must Go For Refresher Courses

Going the poor performance of the Sand Eagles at the 2017 Beach Soccer World Cup, it was evident that the team was lacking tactically.

What was clearly driving the team was just determination, hardwork and will power from the players. It was crystal clear that the team lacked organisation and discipline.

In their first game against Italy, the Sand Eagles started well, but at the crucial stage of the game, they were blown away 12-6 thanks to superior tactical savvy by the Italian coaching crew.

Without taking anything away from their victory against Mexico, they muscled their way to victory after the Mexicans had been the better team in the opening stages of the game.

And against Iran, it was a surprise that the game ended on penalties as the Asians were tactically sound, defended and attacked in unit, which showed a team that is properly coached.

4. Early And Adequate Preparation For Major Tournaments

One of the banes of the Sand Eagles at the 2017 Beach Soccer World Cup in Bahamas was the fact that the team didn't get good preparation.

After the conclusion of the CAF Beach Soccer AFCON hosted by Nigeria last year, nothing was heard of the team.

Serious preparations only started few weeks before the World Cup which unfortunately was not good enough.

While other countries that qualified for the World Cup were busy taking part in pre-tournaments in different parts of the world, the Sand Eagles were camped in Badagry and were expected to perform wonders in Bahamas.

However, how painful it was, their elimination in the group stage didn't come as a surprise to many since much was not expected from them due to poor preparation.

Abdullahi predicts Bafana fall

Shehu Abdullahi

Nigeria midfielder Shehu Abdullahi has assured that the Super Eagles will defeat South Africa when the two teams clash in Uyo next month.

Bafana Bafana will be guests of the Super Eagles on Match Day One of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on June 10, a game which is dicey for both teams.

Nigeria and South Africa missed the last edition in Gabon and will be looking to make a return to the biennial African football showpiece event to be held in Cameroon.

Abdullahi believes the Super Eagles will do the business against South Africa so as to start the campaign on a high that will give the team confidence to go all the way.

“It’s going to be tough for us but we are ready to do all we have to do to get the three points. It is very important to start the qualifiers on a good note and that is what we are going to do.” Abdullahi told supersport.com.

“South Africa didn’t qualify for the last Nations Cup like us, so that will also be at the back of their minds when they come here to face us.

“Nigerians were not happy when we failed to qualify last time out and we're determined to go all the way now to prove we are sorry for letting them down.

“We respect South Africa but we are going out for the three points and I’m sure we are going to do just that,” he added.

The Anorthosis Famagusta midfielder, who played in a variety of positions for the Eagles, also revealed his personal desire to beat Cameroon when the Fifa 2018 World Cup qualifiers resume in August.

“I don’t really want to think of the Cameroon game because I’m focused on the game against South Africa in June but I’ll be lying if I say that hasn’t crossed my mind,” the former Plateau United player said.

“I’m sure every player thinks the same. Even though we are fully focused for the game against Bafana Bafana, Cameroon is also at the back of our minds. I want to play in the World Cup and so do my teammates.

“Insha Allah we will do our best in both games and make Nigerians smile. We just need their support and we will do them proud,” he added.

German Coach Says Rohr German-Nigerian Target Torunarigha Can Be Good As Boateng In Defence

Hertha Berlin fast rising German -Nigerian defender Jordan Torunarigha can be as good as Bayern Munich and Germany star defender Jerome Boateng according to his coach Paul Dardai.

Born to a Nigerian father named Ojokojo Torunarigha who played for Shooting Stars of Nigeria in the 80’s, the defender has made giant strides this season, which could spark a war between Nigeria and Germany over his international future.

Torunarigha is reportedly one of the players coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Gernot Rohr is eyeing to bolster the defence line of Nigeria, although Germany are also keen on the defender representing them at senior level.

Dardai who gave the 19 year old his breakthrough this season at Hertha Berlin believes, he has all it takes to be a good defender as Boateng, if he keep on working hard and maintain his focus.

“Jordan is an absolute pro ready for competition, he is always in the right place in important matches. That was so in the youth team. He is a rough diamond, which has to be polished and then he’ll play properly,” said Dardai.

“Jordan can become one like Jerome Boateng. He reminds me of him in his way of playing. ”

Does anyone remember Okiki Afolabi from Sunshine Stars who scored a lot of goals for the team. He scored about 13 goals in 17 games.

He left Sunshine Stars to Argentina midway through the season. That deal did not work out so well. Now, he is in Malaysia.

Whoever is managing Odey should make sure decisions are made for the player's best interest and progress. If he progresses, the agents will make more from him in the future.

Forget Enyeama, He is not coming back – NFF

Super Eagles officials have said they are amused over recent reports that efforts have been stepped up to convince Vincent Enyeama to come out of international retirement as they disclosed the last time coach Gernot Rohr contacted the Lille goalkeeper was in October.

Media reports have suggested efforts are being made to get Enyeama to return to the Super Eagles especially with the unavailability of Carl Ikeme.

But team officials have now said the story is “a non-starter”.

According to one of the Eagles officials:“There is nothing like this except of course in the media because the last time Rohr spoke to Enyeama was in October.

“The goalkeeper trainer Alloy Agu has assured us he has enough capable hands in the absence of Carl (Ikeme).

“Besides (Daniel) Akpeyi and (Ikechukwu) Ezenwa, we also have Alampasu and Emmanuel Daniel.

“So, we are very much covered in that department.”

However, the NFF maintained the decision to recall Enyeama is the sole responsibility of Rohr.

Long-serving Enyeama called time on his international career in October 2015 after a major row with then Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh.

At every level of football there are always self seeking officials. Who's only interest is, what's in it for me, promoting players who will ensure a pay day under the table for them.

Where we're all these officials when Oliseh treated him like a stray dog. Kicked out of the SE after donkey years of meritorious service for no reason. They all kept quite positioning the players they wanted to take over.

It is difficult to dispute that Enyeama is the best goalkeeper in Africa with regard to Nigeria, every other goalkeeper is way behind him.

To win any tournament you need your best players, Enyeama is simply the best. It is clear these NFF officials do not have the best interest of Nigeria at heart.

Red Hot Everton Target Onyekuru Too Expensive For Borussia Monchengladbach – Eupen

Eupen hot in demand forward Henry Onyekuru who is a target for several teams in Europe, following his goal scoring exploits in what his is debut season in Belgium might be too expensive for Borrusia Monchengladbach.

A club source confirmed to Owngoalnigeria.com, that the Bundesliga side scouted the forward before sounding out the club over a potential deal for the 17 year old, who has 18 goals in all competitions this season for Eupen.

However they were put off by the asking price tag of the Aspire Academy graduate, with Eupen demanding a package close to €15m, a figure that includes add ons based on success and future transfer.

Onyekuru’s valuation put off the Germans, leaving a host of English teams lead by Everton as front runners for his signature in the summer, with Onyekuru also admitting he prefers a move to England.

Already the forward has met with Everton and Southampton with Liverpool the other English team linked with him yet to contact him officially despite their reported interest in him.

Thank God its him instead of Ruud Krol. I think Krol is a better coach than he is.

5 yrs ago today you moved to the great beyond.

The gap you created in the national team is still there.

I thank God and I'll say I was privileged to be among those you brought joy upon their faces.

I wept for joy when you scored Nigeria's first goal in that '94 World Cup. No other player deserved to have that record but you.

The goals record you created is still yet to be broken even 2 decades after.

You were a man that put Nigeria first when national team duty called.

Your 100% commitment was also always noticed on the field of play.

We miss you Rashidi (Yeking) Yekini.

Guys, Let's share our favorite moments of Rashidi Yekini.

My favorite moments of Rashidi Yekini:

1. Of course Nigeria's first goal at any World Cup (USA '94).The grabbing of that net and chanting what no one has still been able to interpret till date.

others: Maroc '88: Nigeria Vs Kenya. Yekini scored a brace to give Nigeria a brilliant commencement to the tourney.

Tunisia '94: Nigeria Vs Egypt. Egyptian keeper boasted Yekini cannot beat him. It was a tight game. Yekini almost scored a cracker when he took a thunderous shot that hit the upright of the Egytians' net. I will not also forget the brilliant goal he scored against Zaire.

1994 WC qualifiers: Ngr Vs CIV. Yekini scored a brace in Lagos to help Ngr Beat CIV 4-1.

O

den we are of one mind , mainly PEP is overstated

His scissors kick against the Spanish team in France 98, when he came in as a sub is still giving me an hypovolemic shock and his goal against Kenya in Afcon 92.

I thought he scored against Kenya in 1992 Afcon. The game is kinda fuzzy now anyway

Yes he did. We won that game 2-1. Kenya was awarded a controversial penalty after we went 2-0 up. Aloy Agu was beaten.
