u are hash,u would invite him(onyekuru) and hoping for him to flop? So that u r justified of ur ogbeche's misadventure assertion in SE .
How do u then invite players to the senior national team,it's it not based on current form and performance in your club again? and that your Ronaldo Elder scenario is far different from what we r seing in SE,do we have someone of Ronaldo's pedigree and still clamoring for Oneykuru to come and bench him. Do u think that Dybala will suddenly start benching Messi without proper integration to the team, no because of Messi's pedigree in world football.
By the way how do u know that Oneykuru is not going to deliver, he is just 19 or so,while Elder was like 27 yrs then. So ur point is we shouldn't bother inviting him because he plays for eupen. Though he will not remain there for long anyways.

From wat i think i know about Rohr, Henry will get a call very soon. Wat he does is make u sweat for ur invite. Just like John Ogu who he said was not better than Nosa right before he gave him a cap or saying NPFL players were not good enough before calling 3 of them. Players can play their way into this eagles team, they just have to be patient.

I beg to disagree on the 3-man defence formation. As much as I fancy these 3-man defence formations(3-4-3, 3-5-2) I don't think we have players who can easily adopt it. Playing dis set-up against a pacy and strong team like d lions of cameroun will be suicidal.

We should not be swept away by Chelsea's recent success with the formation. Don't forget despite Antonio Conte's mastery of this formation he had to spend more time(everyday) perfecting things out with his boys and the time factor is not there when it comes to national team engagement.

Atleast If we must try it out then it should be in a friendly with little intensity from both sides, where we have little to nothing to loose or else we should be expecting a clueless defence line...

Arsenal just switched to a 3 4 3 formation a few weeks ago and their form has drastically improved. They are likely going to make top 4 even though it looked impossible a few weeks ago. It helps when you have two wing backs willing to defend. With Moses, we have one of the best in the world.

Rohr is having a camp, what better time to start testing it out. By the time, the Yaounde game comes, we can be more than ready to play like that if necessary.

It is not true that we do not have the players.

Rivers Utd face Club Africain test in Tunis

Published on Sunday, 14 May 2017 11:39 Hits: 42

Only one Nigerian club – Rivers United - are still in the running for continental glory this season.

Rivers United are largely unheralded in African football but with Enugu Rangers, Wikki Tourists and FC Ifeanyiubah all failing to make progress beyond the early stages of the Caf Champions League and Confederation Cup this year, all eyes, in Nigeria will now literally be on the ‘Pride of Rivers’ to salvage some pride for the most populous black nation in the world.

The Port Harcourt club originally claimed a ticket to represent Nigeria in the Caf Champions League and went about their business in brisk fashion, dispatching Malian side, AS Real Bamako 4-0 on aggregate in the preliminary round.

A 3-0 success over Sudanese giants, Al-Merreikh in the first leg of their first round clash understandably set the pulses racing as expectation levels reached improbable heights with the belief that United could qualify for the money-spinning group stage at the very first time of asking.

Implosion was to follow as the wheels came off spectacularly for the Nigerian debutants.

The ‘Red Devils’ put the Nigerians in their place with a comprehensive 4-0 bashing at a rocking Al-Merreikh Stadium in Omdurman to send hearts sinking in unison.

United had their tails firmly between their legs but reprieve was to come.

Second bite at the cherry
Rivers United dropped to the continent’s second-tier competition following their failure in the elite tournament knowing fully well that no Nigerian club have ever claimed success in the Caf Confederation Cup.

Their first test came in the shape of seven-time Rwanda National Football League champions, Rayon Sports in the playoff round.

The Rwandans had the luxury of playing the second leg at the Amahoro Stadium, Kigali and many tipped them to progress at the expense of the Nigerian club particularly after their impressive display in Port Harcourt in the first leg.

‘Gikundiro’ with just one defeat in 22 domestic games, outplayed the ‘Pride of Rivers’ for large parts in the first leg decided at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt on April 16 with individuals like Nanei Thierry, Savio Nshuti, Djabel Nanishimwe, Eric Irambona, Moussa Camara and particularly Kwieera Pierrot impressing with slick displays.

They were extremely unlucky not to score in Port Harcourt with United’s veteran goalkeeper, Sunday Rotimi playing an absolute blinder.

A different proposition however awaited Rayon Sports in the return fixture in Kigali as United produced their most accomplished away performance of the season to grind out a 0-0 draw, sealing progress to the group stage on a 2-0 aggregate.

The celebrations by the Nigerians at full time at the Amahoro were furious, especially as results from the domestic scene, where United was swimming in the relegation zone, were largely underwhelming.

Things will however likely get tougher as matches in the group stages get underway this weekend.

An expedition into the big time
Rivers United have never taken part in the Caf Confederation Cup prior to 2017 and qualification for the group stage is pretty much uncharted territory for the Port Harcourt club.

The Nigerians are in Group A alongside FUS Rabat (Morocco), Club Africain (Tunisia) and KCCA (Uganda).

FUS Rabat were winners of the competition in 2010 and reached the semi-finals in 2016.

They were runners-up in the Caf Super Cup in 2011 and current sit in seventh place in the Botola Pro (Moroccan top flight) a competition they have won on one previous occasion (2016) while finishing as runners up five times (1973, 1974, 1981, 2001 and 2002) in the past.

Club Africain also have a storied history in African football.

They were African champions in 1991 and runners-up of the Caf Confederation Cup in 2011.

The Tunisians also made their mark in the now rested Cup Winners Cup where they finished as runners up on two occasions (1990 and 1999).

Many view the final side in the group KCCA as the weakest link in the section but the Ugandans have earned their stripes as one of the most formidable sides in East Africa.

On Wednesday, KCCA emerged champions of Uganda for the 12th time following a 2-0 victory over Lweza FC at the Phillip Omondi Stadium.

The Kasasasiro Boys (Garbage Collectors) have been competing in African club competition since 1977 and reached the quarter finals of the continent’s premiere club competition where they came unstuck against the powerful Asante Kotoko side in 1982 that whacked them 7-1 on aggregate.

They have also reached the quarter finals of inter Caf club competition on three other occasions but never progressed past that stage.

While all three clubs in Group A are dyed-in-the-wool campaigners in African club competition, Rivers United are making only their first expedition in such treacherous waters.

The first test; the big test
Many members of the Rivers United team have since revealed that the highly charged atmosphere in Omdurman when they faced Al-Merreikh in Sudan contributed to their 0-4 capitulation to the Red Devils in the Champions League.

The atmosphere in Tunisia on Sunday when United come up against Club Africain is likely to be similar, if not more intense.

Club Africain play their home fixtures at the 60,000 capacity Stade Olympique de Radès which will literally exemplify a cauldron of hate and noise on Sunday evening.

The Tunisians are a free-scoring side and they proved that point with distinction by putting six goals past Mauritian outfit, AS port-Louis 1000 in the playoff round.

Top marksman, Saber Khalifa who scored in the playoff round against the Mauritians, is responsible for most of the side’s goals.

The 30-year-old fox-in-the-box, is a full Tunisian international who has scored seven times in 41 appearances for his country’s senior national team, the Carthage Eagles.

Algerian, Ibrahim Chenihi and Zimbabwean, Matthew Rusika are the two other main outlets for Club Africains’ goals.

Club Africain are a well-oiled machine; a truly professionally-run side with eight non-Tunisians which includes three Europeans (a German and two French) on their books.

Coached by one of the most progressive North African trainers around, Ellili Chibeb, the fluid-playing Club Africain represents one of the best sides on the continent.

Chibeb, who has previously coached clubs like Monastir, Stade Gabésien, CA Bizertin and CS Sfaxien is an advocate of attacking football but he gets irked when his side concedes!

In 23-year-old Ali Abdi, Ellili has a ‘general’, with experience that tends to belie his relatively tender years, on whom his defence is anchored.

Only Esperance and Etiole du Sahel have performed better domestically than Club Africain this term and Rivers United will need to produce their best performance this season to have any chance of winning in Tunis on Sunday.

Club captain, Festus Austine knows the task is daunting but believes it can be accomplished.

“We are not going there (to Tunisia) to draw the game. We want to win,” he said to www.riversunitedfc.com.ng.

“It will be difficult but we want to top the group and to do that, we have to get a good result in Tunisia.

“We want to become the first Nigerian club to win the Caf Confederation Cup title and we know we can do it.”

Tough words but talk is cheap. Rivers United must be ready to walk the walk if they are to make history.

Manchester City to listen to offers for Kelechi Iheanacho as up to twelve face Pep’s axe – report

As many as TWELVE players could be on their way out of Manchester City this summer as Pep Guardiola’s prepares to get ruthless and overhaul his underachieving squad.

The Mail on Sunday reports all the usual names who could go, with club legend Pablo Zabaleta now confirmed to be on his way out. Zabaleta will join West Ham in the summer after agreeing a two-year deal with the Hammers.

Jesus Navas, Willy Caballero, Gael Clichy, Bacary Sagna and Yaya Touré are also out of contract, while Joe Hart, Eliaquim Mangala, Wilfried Bony, Samir Nasri or Jason Denayer could all go on permanent deals following loan spells away.

The cull may not end there, with the report claiming that the club will listen to offers for 20-year-old forward Kelechi Iheanacho, who has been overshadowed by the arrival of Gabriel Jesus and is struggling to get much game time under Pep Guardiola.

Iheanacho has been linked with a move to Bundesliga side Hoffenheim, but if City allow him to leave permanently on loan, there will be many suitors in the market for such a clinical young striker.

Rohr breaks silence over exclusion of Onyekuru

Posted By: Our Reporter On: May 13, 2017 In: Sports

The decision of Gernot Rohr coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria to exclude Henry Onyekuru from his list of players for the training camp and friendly game against Corsica has generated a lot of debate.

Onyekuru has become the darling of most European teams following a whirlwind first season in the Belgium top flight, where his 20 goals in all competitions has helped modest and newly promoted side Eupen preserve their top flight status.

However the 19 year old wasn’t called up by the coach of the senior team of Nigeria due to reasons which according to one of his aides bothers on properly monitoring of the player before inviting him.

” Hello. Onyekuru is not being ignored. To the best of my knowledge the coach is monitoring him and he will get a chance soon. I’m sure”, Tunde Adelakun posted on social media in response to a question over the national team chances of the forward.

As exclusively reported by Owngoalnigeria.com, the forward was initially in the list of players called up for the manager for Eagles upcoming activities, but was dropped for reasons best known to the coach of the team.

Hot on the heels of allegations of favouritism in team selection levelled against Gernot Rohr the coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria by Nosa Igiebor,, another player has accused the manager of the same thing.

Nosa claimed to have been benched for players he is better than in the World Cup 2018 Qualifiers against Zambia in Ndola which Nigeria won 2-1.

Another player who has also suffered same fate has backed Igiebor for his brave stand, as he too suffered the same fate ?with the Super Eagles under Franco-German coach Rohr.

” Nosa is correct in pointing it out, but maybe he did it at the wrong time. To be honest some players are his favourite. You see him speak with them on a regular while others like me and four other players he rarely speaks with us”, he told Owngoalnigeria.com on the condition of anonymity.

” I know it’s normal for a coach to have some players he is close to but it shouldn’t be so glaring. A lot of us feel he is not carrying us along, but we can’t speak out now because the team is doing well. At the appropriate time, we will spill the beans”.

Kayode: I’m In No Competition With Anyone For Austrian League Top Scorer Award

Austrian Wien striker, Olanrewaju Kayode, says he is focusing on his personal and his club’s progression, not on a competition with any other player for the top scorer award in the Austrian top flight, the Tipico Bundesliga, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

The Nigeria international scored twice in Austria Wien’s 3-0 home win over SV Guntamatic Reid on Saturday to take his Tipico Bundesliga goal tally to 16, now at par with Sturm Graz’s Deni Alar.

The speedy striker has scored 22 goals in all competitions for Austria Wien who are in the second position in the league table with 60 points from 33, behind Salzburg who are on 72 points from same number of games played.

With only three rounds of matches remaining in the current Tipico Bundesliga campaign, all eyes are on Kayode and Sturm Graz’s
Alar, on 16 goals each in the race for the top scorer award. Remarkably, Graz have a game in hand which is an advantage for Alar.

There is also Salzburg’s Minamino Takumi with 11 goals, as well as Dovedan Nikola (SCR Altach), Monschein Christoph (Admira Wacker) and Oberlin Dimitri (Salzburg) with 10 goals apiece, all having an outside chance of beating Kayode and Alar to the top scorer award.

Kayode however shrugs off a suggestion of competition for the top scorer award, as far as he is concerned.

“I’m not in competition with anyone,” he tells Sky News Austria.

“I only play my game. At the end of the season everything is possible, but I am in no competition. This is soccer.”

He says of his club’s home win over SV Reid: “It was a good performance. In the last three games, we went out and played good football. We are tactically well adjusted and the chemistry in the team is right.”

With Salzburg looking good to retaining the Austrian Tipico Bundesliga title and taking the UEFA Champions League slot, Austria Wien are certain to pick one the three UEFA Europa League tickets with a second place finish.

have once stated this here. Even before chelsea became the favourite to win this season's EPL.

From my earlier post. You'll see that I stated that I fancy the set up. But it won't be easy integrating it into a national team set up.

I don't even know what to say when u mentioned that we've got the players to execute such a tactics. The truth is, presently we've only got Moses who is only sure for 65mins game time here in africa and to think we need atleast 3versatile WBs makes your claim a joke.

Taiwo Awoniyi scores again, NEC's 2nd goal. As it stands they would escape relegation.
good to hear him scoring again. Atleast, today's goal will boost his confidence in front of goal.

Good! Aside Moses, Kindly give me another WB we possess in our arsenal?

You need to factor other things when it comes to playing in Africa. I don't expect you to forget how harsh our Weather can be, the pitches are way different from what you can get in europe.

I bet you, the Moses you've just mention will burn out in 65mins if played in that role.

We can try any formation we need be it 2-7-1, 3-6-1, 3-5-2 or 1-8-1. Make we shall qualify first with the conventional 4 man defence our players sabi well well. Even with 4 men we no get clean sheet and you wan make we put 3 otondos for back.

Moses who just finished a 38 league season will burn out in 65 mins?? Come on, now.. His fitness can definitely cope with one fame.

Moses was not a wing back before this season. There is no reason why Echiejile can't play on the left for instance.

Phillippe Trouisser played 3 at the back when he qualified Nigeria for the world Cup.
