bixton: Someone who lives in Lagos and gets most contracts in Enugu or PHC needs to relocate ASAP. Some logistics are sourced locally. A contractor that will need a loan for $6000 to purchase such equipment in Nigeria is still an errand boy. You buy such equipment as things progress not at inception. Machinery, when managed well, pays for itself over time. My only concern is unemployment. 1 Like |

What is the horizontal line/grove (as shown in the picture below) on the wall called? Is it made pre or post plastering? I have seen some aluminium inserts (probably cladding), but just curious. Any ideas?

InvertedHammer:. Any body who's into one form of business or the other is certainly an errand boy. Unemployment is not an excuse, as technology improves and ideas expand it is bound to occur. In order to run an actual company that intends to expand you need to conform to certain economic principles, et al. Except the company is being run by the same CEO,same accountant, same cashier, same procurement officer, same secretary, etc, etc. |

spyder880: Now Spyder880 you've just confirmed our view and call that contractors should plough back some profit into the business to solve the challenges of the trade and pass on some of the efficiency savings to clients. You talk of transport costs to transfer equipment to site. Instead of buying fancy cars and marrying more wives, like some of you contractors do, why not buy a Dyna Truck for example to transport equipment to site? On the long run, you save up on transport costs. You can also pass on this in-house company transport to clients and split the costs between company and client. So for example client wants to buy wood for roofing, instead of looking for third party transportation for 25k, you could present your company Dyna Truck and factor in 15k for wear and tear. I'm sure the client will gladly pay. Then you talk of police. That one dey. But if your company truck is well marked with company name and logo with all permits fully paid, this will comand respect from police and client. Police will not be confused with the contents of a duly registered construction company. Please contractors invest in your business. Find new ways to do old things. No business can grow without investment in appropriate technology at the required level. 10 Likes 1 Share |

WorldAmbassador: I've built in the US and cuurently in Nigeria. Here are my views as a lay person. The American contractor makes it a matter of priority to get mechanized. Even though there are loans at banks but most start with tools from the used market which is very robust. No sane person on a small level starts off with a loan from the bank. The first thing my contractor friends do is haunt/source used professional level tools. The other issue I see is the lack of specialization in Nigeria, but I can be wrong. There are specific crews that do foundation, framing, decking, etc Nigeria seems to be one man for the job. I think this brings inefficiency. Spyder880s decking tool should be available for all builders in the area to rent and not sitting in storage. Now in Nigeria, despite the hundred of thousands that I've paid my builder all I can see is a tattered Toyota Corolla. And we're still renting poun poun and shobiri. I've bought some over the years but they end up locomoting away. If I use that as an example it seems that the Nigerian Contractor is not interested in mechanizing. Loans or not. Brabus was on his way somewhat because at least he bought a Mack dump truck and has a site van. He was going to buy a concrete mixer and pump. The bane of the issue is the cheap labor in Nigeria. As well as lack of a way for us to quantify quality. I think we can all agree that Skimanski has set himself a shoulder above, at least in terms of daring designs and execution to detail. He won't come cheap in Nigeria BUT I can open my local yellowpages and call a thousand Skimanskis right now near me. Quality is guaranteed due to licensing, regulation, etc How is this pertinent? Even Skimanski is riding on this cheap labor, as is all the other builders like Aventures, etc How come this thesis of mine reads like dejavu? 6 Likes |

bixton: The level of technology that a company embraces should be within its scope of practice. The primary goal of going into business is to turn profit even if it takes some time. A big firm like Julius Berger may not have all the technology they need which is why they subcontract sometimes. I tailored my opinion to the needs of NL contractors who will most likely read the comment. If I need wider audience, then I will shoot for the national dailies per the excavator discussion. This is still an in-house discussion. NB: The main thing building contractors in Nigeria need are tools that will make their work, markings and measurements straight; their curves neat. Crooked arcs should not be the norm. 4 Likes |

InvertedHammer: Looking at the picture that Egunmogaji posted, it is obvious that it can only do TRIANGULAR GROOVES. But it does not take much imagination, to use the same style of Tool, to make the squarish grooves we desire, by simply replacing the triangular part, with a square-shaped plate. Just cut SQUARE-SHAPE aluminium or part of a Pipe and weld it to the flat surface. Pronto, you are on your way!. This is where sound education comes-in. A well educated mind is open to new ideas and can easily advance such ideas by way of further development. Majority of our Contractors, though l must commend their tenacity in the face of daunting challenges, are unfortunately poorly/half educated. There is always a place for sound education, whichever way you dice it. ****Chai, l don find trouble this night! Let the fireworks begin*** 1 Like |

I noticed that some places do not plaster over their block works and the masonry looks beautiful. They use grovers in between the blocks to create a clean finish with no chalk overs. Advantages: 1. It saves money on cement and materials for plastering. 2. It saves money on paints And if done right looks exquisite. This is where building construction meets art. I don't think any "block count" mason will have time for it. Check out the picture below:

Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by diordaves(m): 1:43pm On Jun 07, 2017 |
InvertedHammer: Looks beautiful as a feature wall. If you adopt exposed brick work throughout the build, then be ready to overlook the associated surface wiring which will deface the whole project in my opinion. |
Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by InvertedHammer: 1:46pm On Jun 07, 2017 |
diordaves: It is factored into the original design. When they cut walls, they don't use hammer and chisel. Also in the surface wiring, they don't run the wires the way we do. Check out the second picture. Did you see the sockets? It doesn't have to be used throughout the building. It could be used in lieu of external tiles or marbles. I think the next step for me will be to buy a plot of land, design and build a bungalow with my crazy imaginations to see how it turns out. Just a project house. \ 1 Like |

InvertedHammer: Yes I did. I noticed surface wiring. The second picture looks like cladding and not brick or block work. So yes, it can be used as tiles. But it's beautiful no doubt. |
