ChrisKels:u call a regular player for Basel an academy player?? if he isn't good will the swiss cap him No matter where he is playing right now thiago ilori is a good right back.BTW mind you this is national football so club form doesn't necessarily matter abi ihenancho, musa, iwobi too no dey chop bench The squad that won the 2002 euros for Greece was full of bench warmers. I wouldn't argue for onuoha all I know is that he is the most experienced defender of Nigerian descent who plays in England the dude no dey chop bench sef. |

Icon4s:I'm not worried. With our big boys back, we will beat SA away. Many factors led to the shock SA win. Our major problem yesterday was that we did not have players willing to run at their defenders. I knew we were going to concede. We must concede with Akpeyi starting, a new CB pairing, first time Onazi-Ndidi defensive pairing. But I felt we would outscore them. And we should have. Alas, Iwobi didn't come to the party, Musa was fasting and Kelechi became starved of the ball, plus he didn't have the drive to track to the middle to get the balls himself, thereby pulling the defenders out of position. In the return leg, with Victor Moses back, we will have our best dribbler back. That will open the spaces and with Mikel's leadership in the middle, we will be able to carve spaces for someone like Kelechi to bury the chances. Balogun should also be back, therefore we should have the usual fine CB pairing. Echiejile and Shehu were fine in yesterday's game. Things like this happen. We will be fine. We will be at Russia and Cameroun. 1 Like |

TheGoodJoe:Bros, the most difficult ball for a goalkeeper to save is a close header. In fact, the only sure way any goalkeeper can save it is if it is nodded straight at him. Akpeyi should not be in our national team, but he was not responsible for any of the goals yesterday. I saw that he tried his best to get a red card for the second goal, and I wished he did because that will rule him out of contention for the next games. 5 Likes |

cromz: U still shooting urself in the foot. Though this debate isn't worth it, how many first team appearances did he make for the first team of Basel this past season and the season before and how many did Awaziem for Porto? U ain't got no facts(stats) to back up ur Thiago claim so I term it utter gibberish or in komekn's voice, prejudice. In that championship, Tiago can't dust Iorfa and adebajo's shoes, they are d guys u should be clamoring for not a below average Portuguese wanna be. About Nedum, no argument because u just made ur point which is emotion ridden. Giving him a call up reeks of desperation and mediocrity. Besides, he's past his prime and ain't Eagles worthy (both quality wise and his initial rejection of the team). |

Iwobi is not living up to expections!!!...Wenger mostly plays him in LW position, therefore he should continue playing in that same position (whenever Mikel is around) for SE,....but if he is not that good in that position as you guys always label him then he should be relegated to the bench until he becomes serious... 1 Like |

komekn: Real Madrid I can understand but Chelsea?! Is it Solanke that is chopping bench because of a below average Bathsuayi? Did you know who Marcos Alonso was? Why can't Aina become prominent there? So you mean Man City does not have quality players? Or who in this Chelsea team do you think can bench Ozil in the no 10 role? Every single soul in this thread is sentimentally biased at some point. |

TheGoodJoe: U can tell me about Echiejile (especially on the first goal) but Onazi was spot on with his positioning. Watch the first goal again and u would see Onazi was marking Rantie until Awaziem left the man with the ball forcing Onazi to cover for Echiejile (who I guess was fetching water). Still Awaziem didn't make it to Rantie or the ball meaning he should have just stayed with the man on the ball. I don't too much blame the boy for that because I called Leon Balogun out for the same thing against Algeria and Senegal. They get back into position instead of stopping the man with the ball. 1 Like |

TheGoodJoe: As an attacker he just didn't do enough. I expected him to drop deep and help the build up play. He played exactly the way he played against Leicester City away, sitting on the shoulder of the last defender and waiting for the final ball. A futile wait must be said. 1 Like |

As much as I'm not a fan of Onazi's style of play, I won't fault him for yesterday's misadventure, rather, Rohr for fielding two defensive midfielders who like making forays, the less said about Onazi's inability to maintain his position, the better. Rohr tried it against Senegal, and we were headed for disaster until we had a blessing in disguise which brought in Ogu. I thought that was enough lesson but no, we had to leak our wounds before we learn. Agu we read in a report likes sitting behind to allow his partner push forward, he tackles just like onazi but more clinical with his unlike onazi, passes better than onazi and is hardly drawn outta position unlike onazi, but outta our loyalty for captaincy and experience, we left the better player on the bench. Even ogu would have been more disciplined. Rohr got his tactics 70% wrong and only he can tell us the rationale for ousting onyekuru from the match day squad for Osimhen. Onyekuru would have, as he has always been, an upgrade in S. MOSES (We saw it play out in the Belgium league). What that match needed was wing forwards not wingers because we ain't got tall strikers for aerial balls. We needed an onyekuru-like WF to cut in not a headless chicken in Moses who kept puffing and hoofing. A winger who could neither cross nor cut in shouldn't be getting a call up even if he plays for Madrid. Simon will never grow. Moses was all dribbles with zero final ball. Musa was even worse. I blame Rohr for all this. That game needed both pace and urgency but our wingers couldn't offer either. I would have crucified him for playing iwobi wide, but I can't because when iwobi came to d middle, he still couldn't do no jack. Iwobi was poor same as KC who could hardly dribble, coupled with his awful first touch. He didn't even manage a short on target though the midfield wasn't productive. The last time I talked about onazi shaping in or shipping out, some guys came for my head. I still maintain that stance, if onazi doesn't improve on his discipline, awareness, passing, tackles then, Esiti's move to PSG, would make him lose out on call ups because IMHO, Agu is already better. Onazi is all hustle no ball sense just as S. Moses is all dribbling no ball sense. Modified ; I would have called Rohr's astuteness into questioning but for the fact that no man is infallible and he has not really the shown his managerial ineptitude. Awaziem's debut shouldn't have come in a match of this magnitude( drill or no drill) with a whacky LB in Echiejile beside him and another CB who is still learning his thread, as his partner, what a baptism of fire. Awaziem showed glimpses of brilliance and would have done better with Balogun as his partner and a better LB. I tell u, lad is a very good ball playing CB. He was badly exposed by Elderson so u guys should cut him some slack. 1 Like |

Chai, too many sentimental comments on this thread, some people won't see anything wrong with the players they like. What exactly was Iheanacho doing on that pitch after 45 mins? He was no where to be found and had no connection whatever either with his fellow striker or the midfield. If they don't feed you balls, why not come for the balls? Even when he was subbed, he was walking off the pitch like we were 10 goals up and an SA player had to come remind him to hurry out. Yesterday was a sad day. Ideye must not be discarded yet, he's been the best SS since 2012. We just need to conclude on a good 9 which we currently lack except for Osimen and Kayode who are still raw. The midfield lacked creativity, the 3 midifielders played the same way! No one took charge of being creative. For the defence, save for awaziem, the rest did well but then when you don't attack, you put pressure on your defence especially when you have a dead midfield. 3 Likes |

We should stop playing bench warmers in competitive matches.Club goal scorers should start matches.Onyekuru should have played instead of Iwobi and Kayode instead of Nacho.Iwobi and Nacho can come in as subs.Emenike and Aluko did better than this in 2015.Truth be told.Onazi shouldn't start in Midfield. We should have played Mikel Agu(defensive minded) and Ndidi(to push forward). We need more technical players in the team.Call ups should be given to Emma Daniel and Nwokolor.Akpeyi and Ezenwa should be dropped.I don't see why osimhen should make match day squad. We really underated south Africa. For those saying Ndidi should be defensive minded,am against that.We should play Ndidi and Mikel Agu just like the Togo match.Just the same way the midfield trio of Mikel Obi,Onazi and Ramon Azeez failed in 2014 WC against Iran. The same way Onazi-Ndidi failed in the opening minutes against Senegal and repeated against south Africa.Pls we need a good left back to replace Echiejile. We should try to secure Tammy. Our team will be okay. |

After going through kinds of comment and posts both here and other threads, I see how impatient Nigerians can be. Some folks are already calling for the head of the coach. Truth be said he got it wrong yesterday but cut him some slack- atleast close to 4 of our regulars weren't available for the match. Some were even saying he lacks the quality to lead us forward- I laugh. How quick we forgot that it was this same man who brought our football out of mess(70position in Fifa ranking) I was so happy we lost last evening... Winning with such performance would have spelt doom cos everybody including the coach will by now be carried away with the victory. I implore our coaches to throw the nets wider so we can always have the best crop of Eagles. He seem to be succumbing to external pressure. The call for home based stars was too early. The slot given to them could 've given us chance to access other players. |

somehow: Ok first of all, he was still in that pitch after 45 mins because we were looking for a goal, he had no business getting subbed in that game except if we were ahead. Second I thought we played a 4-5-1 hybrid formation? Which fellow striker is he supposed to connect with? I doubt if you even know the formation we played, but of course you have the right to criticise. Finally, Ideye our best SS since 2012? SS actually means support striker and not shadow striker and that is definetly not Ideye. Can't really see why we want to bring back Ideye when Fanendo Adi is exactly the same type of player and quite frankly he scores more goals than Ideye |

cromz: I would add to your list Dominic Iorfa, Onyedinma, Aina and possibly Hope Akpan. Nedum has seen it and done it. These are seasoned professional but still very young. Even this concept of young let's not dwell on it too much. The issue is quality not age. There are now a host of Nigerian origin players playing thier last U21 games for England. Finally, although injury prone but currently fit, if to say Anichebe was playing yesterday it would be different dynamic. Let them come to camp and see who is best or at least increase our options. 1 Like |

Please give me 2 activities iheanacho contributed to yesterday. Secondly, you know little about the SE if you don't know the role and contributions of Ideye as a support striker. I employ you go watch out clips from when we won the nations cup against Burkina down to the last competitive game we played before yesterday. Mickael2: |

komekn: Nigeria coaches really have a role to play in iwobi's development... we shouldn't expect arsene Wenger to start fielding him as a 10 before we start playing him in the middle.... in fact him playing that role in the SE should spur arsenal trust him in that role....few years from now that lad is an attacking midfielder and not a winger |
Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2025 And 2026 World Cup by Mickael2(m): 1:01pm On Jun 11, 2017 |
somehow: I am guessing you don't know the difference between a double-9 system and a SS system. Ideye is not a SS, he is a 9, has always been and will always be. Meanwhile watch Athletico Madrid vs Barcelona 2014, Messi was totally annonymous and even I wanted him to be subbed out but he did score a goal(that was wrongly ruled out), that's what football is all about, when you are looking for a goal you don't sub out any striker because you don't know who may score |

Lets get some facts out of the way. And this one is for Good Joe. Iheanacho is not the best thing that has happened to football since chocolate. So please stop the hype. Fact 1. He is not a 9 but a support striker. Fact 2. We need to sharpen 2 formations. 4.4.2 and 3.4.3. thats assuming we have the cooperation of Victor Moses Fact 3. Alex Iwobi is not a winger, he is a 10. Sacrificing him for Etebo was a wrong call. Etebo is full of pace but no delivery. Also selfish. And if wenare not gonna use Iwobi as a 10, then lets find a new 10. Fact 4. Coach needs to firm up his starting 22 as against starting 11. And both have to be equally strong. Fact5. If we have short players as strikers or wingers, why play long balls? Thus, we need to learn to string passes in the middle of the park. Long balls will probably work for someone in the frame of Osimhen. Fact 6. Who is our holding midfielder apart from Mikel, and who is the one to shield the defence when attacking? We can blame defence. But if we dont have our own Ngolo Kante, who snatches every ball from opponents, or wins every tackle, I am afraid, we arent gonna get far Fact 7. Team selection should be based on performance however, we must also understand that we need a team that gels first. What the SA coach was hammering on was that Nigeria is a group of talents and that SA will need to be careful not to allow them to Gel. And thats exactly wat foiled our plan. In other words, we can clamour for inclusion of this player and that player, and question why this player was not invited but whatever combination, these players need to be a team. Teamwork is key 2 Likes |
