realjoker: This is old info, btw, given the high electrification rate. Kenya added 1.3 million households to its electricity grid last year, raising the percentage of connected Kenyans to 55%, from just 27% in 2013, when the country’s electrification campaign began in earnest. In another four years, Kenya plans to achieve “universal access” where 95% of homes will have access to electricity. https://qz.com/882938/kenya-is-rolling-out-its-national-electricity-program-in-half-the-time-it-took-america/ |

Bifwoli: I've a buddy who supplied cane to Mumias and later interned there. He said Kidero turned round the companty. He cleared long standing arrears and increased production. His successor,a Coastal turned everything to poo. Today's paper talks of a national shortage of WAREHOUSING. The implications are obvious; consumption is rising faster than FCMG producers plan for. It's serious!
http://www.procurementandlogisticsonline.com/2017/06/warehouse-shortage-kenya/ That's very very real growth,by any standard,in fact imo,its even higher than what's captured in official stats. Yes,we still have poverty and inequality but its reducing. Also even a 30% GDP increase in 5 years, adjusted for rebasing is nothing to sneeze at. |

kikuyu1: so from your own source , access to electricity last year in kenya for 2016 is 55% 27% in 2013 , nigeria was 57.7 % in 2014 , but still the two countries like most african countries are very late in the world . in africa when you see stats for access to electricity in 2014 , their is only 7 or 8 country that do well : South africa 86.0% ,Gabon 89.5 % , Morocco 91.6%, Libya 98.4%, Tunisia 99.8 % , Egypt 99.8% , Algeria 100% 2 Likes |

Bifwoli:Bifwoli, you're just being economical with the truth. First off, my observations and reality on the ground viz. corn shortage and higher food prices cannot be ignored. Month on month, they're rising. And now you think that's not something to discuss? The smart folks at kilimo house surely should have had contingency to mitigate the obvious impending shortage but they're not managing things ad hoc. Is that good governance. I have an engineer friend who's closely linked to the galana kulalu project and he tells me that there is alot of mismanagement in both technical and operations point of view. The project failed in its objective which was to plug maize shortages, and failed miserably. Now precious forex is enriching Zambian and Tanzanian farmers and traders. Is that not a fiasco? Ps: We live in a high tech age, just because your neighbors suffer shortages doesn't mean we should! Second, i doubt if you have ever lived in the 90s era to appreciate some of the civil and basic rights like seeking legal redress for perceived and real breach of the same to rejoice in seeing leaders of the opposition engage in legal proceedings that baba Moi would have sent you to detention w/out trial for. I envy our democracy, and i love seeing people come out and practice their CONSTITUTIONAL rights, and not fall in the oh well! mediocrity that the masses have fallen into. Third, the essence of a political party is to have a vehicle that you use to sell your ideas to the citizenry, in order to attain power. They are not responsible for development, the state is. But the state must actuate the policy and vision of the ruling party. As an opposition party, you don't have the levers of power, nor the purse strings, so you can't be responsible for any mess that the government makes. So they have to get into power first! Look at Nigeria for instance, the APC has failed dismally in correcting the mess of the PDP, their pre election "politicking "(please tell us your meaning of this word) notwithstanding. They simply rode a wave, but had no clue about what to do about it. I say without any equivocation that jubilee rode to power on anti ICC wave, but had no idea what to do with corruption and let's face it, they weren't so keen on devolution. The result is massive discontent in vast swathes of the country who feel left out. Yes, this is why NASA will always be there. Fourth, i think you know very well that our parliament is a place where laws are made. That's the primary role of the legislature. By pressuring your MP to give you development, you drive the gears of corruption whereby bwan MP is forced to look for funds to help your project. Several MPs have had tonnes of projects in their constituencies, you just seem to fall into some bizarre trap that alot folks like falling into which is you start by making a false assertion then you repeat it ad infinitum till it begins to sound like the truth. And the falsity here being that not a single leader of the opposition has done anything worthwhile in their official /personal capacities to uplift Kenya /Kenyans.Gov Nanok for instance has done tremendous work in raising the pry school enrollment of kids in turkana nearly 100% fold since his ascent. The govt leaning press will not allow you to hear this, lest they destroy the carefully crafted narrative that says opposition hawana maendeleo. Fifth, mega projects tend to have a booster effect on the macro economy within the medium and long term. In the short term, they obviously boost the local economy for the duration of a project, but how they lift people in the immediate vicinity is mostly a heart rending story. Did you know most people living near Masinga dam, sondu miriu hydro tunnel etc have no electricity but my comfy butt in Nairobi does? More later. |

obaaderemi: no in algeria access to electricity is 100% ,so even rural areas have electricty , now they work on Natural Gas for all homes and the connection of the rural area to the natural gas network , population access to Natural Gas in Algeria was 59% in 2015 ( including rural areas) 1 Like |
