World Cup-Winning Striker Of Nigerian Descent Begins Training With Liverpool, Snubs Chelsea

Published: July 06, 2017

England U20 international of Nigerian parentage Dominic Solanke has started pre-season training with Liverpool.

The Reds are yet to officially announce the transfer of Solanke from Chelsea, but the talented striker was sighted at Melwood for the second straight day, on Wednesday, July 5.

Solanke and another player of Nigerian descent ,who helped England win the Fifa U20 World Cup Sheyi Ojo, were pictured by Liverpool's photographers training with other first-teamers at the start of pre-season training.

It is assumed that Liverpool have not yet announced the transfer of Solanke and the duration of his contract because the Professional Football Compensation Committee has not determined the training compensation to be paid to Chelsea.

The Golden Ball winner at the 2017 Fifa U20 World Cup has joined Liverpool as a free agent after spending the last thirteen years of his career at Stamford Bridge.

Onyekuru – I Had Medicals At PSG Before Agreeing To Join Everton Two Hours Later

July 6, 201703

‎Super Eagles fringe star Henry Onyekuru has revealed he sensationally turned down a move to French giants PSG in favour of a move to English side Everton.

Onyekuru is on a season long loan deal to Anderlecht from Everton where he penned a five year deal following his 7 million euros transfer from Belgian side Eupen.

However the 20 year old said he could have been playing for French giants PSG as he had already agreed a deal to join the team after which he had his medical, but he opt out of the move two hours later after hearing of interest from Everton.

” As many as 48 teams were battling to sign me, when you consider the amount of teams from January till I decided to join Everton, it was crazy but I believe the move to Everton is best for my career.

” I even had medicals at PSG, but they were a bit slow during talks, and two hours after my medicals, my manager cancelled the deal with them when we heard of the offer from Everton. I was that close to joining PSG”, Onyekuru revealed.

Ex Eagles Defender Taribo – Awaziem’s Move To Nantes Is Bad News For Omeruo If…..

Former Super Eagles defender Taribo West has praised the loan move of Chidozie Awaziem to Nantes of France saying the move is the best that could happen to the 20 year old just a year to the World Cup.

FC Porto youngster Awaziem completed his move to Nantes on a season long loan deal, in a move which was agreed as part of the deal that saw coach of Nantes Sergio Conceciao join the Portuguese side.

In an exclusive chat with Owngoalnigeria.com, Taribo who also had a stint in France where he played for Auxerre during his formative years said the defender will receive the best of education in the French Ligue 1 especially if he gets regular run of games at Nantes.

” It’s a good move that speaks a lot about his quality. He played for FC Porto at the age of 19 which is huge for an African central defender especially as he didn’t play any level of professional football in Nigeria before his move to Portugal”, Taribo said.

Awaziem whose inclusion in the starting line up in the Nigerian team that lost 0-2 to South Africa in the AFCON 2019 Qualifiers drew condemnation towards coach of the team Gernot Rohr will definitely become a Super Eagles regular if he gets regular games in France, according to Taribo West.

” He need a move like this, just close to the World Cup. It will help him cement his spot in the national team, and it could come at the expense of Kenneth Omeruo, as you know the French Ligue is among the top five European Leagues.

” If as expected Awaziem get games at Nantes, Omeruo will have to move to a league higher than the Turkish League if he intends to keep his spot in the team. The competition for spots is good for Nigeria to be honest “.

Bursaspor’s €1m Bid For Troost-Ekong Rejected By Gent Despite Agreeing Three Year Deal With The Nigerian

The transfer of Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong is still hanging in the balance as Bursaspor are yet to agree on a fee for his transfer with his team Gent.

Bursaspor have agreed a three year deal with the 23 year old defender but an agreement between both clubs is still far off as Gent refused Bursaspor’s first bid of €1m as exclusively revealed by this portal.

Contrary to reports in the Turkish media which says a fee has been agreed between both teams for his transfer, informed sources revealed that both teams are still some ways apart in their valuation of the player.

”Talks are ongoing but no fee has been agreed for his transfer yet. Hopefully soon but for now Bursaspor opening offer of €1m was rejected by Gent, but they are talking and hopefully a compromise will be reached.

”Gent are demanding a fee close to 5 million euros, which many believed will definitely be lowered based on talks with Bursaspor but Gent are also running the risk of losing him for free next summer. I believe the move will be done in few days time”. He said.

Nantes in Enyeama chase
By Colin Udoh, KweséESPN

Nantes and two as yet unnamed Turkish clubs are in the running to sign Nigerian goalkeeping legend Vincent Enyeama, sources close to the player have confirmed to KweséESPN.

Enyeama, along with 10 other players, have been left in limbo by new Lille OSC manager Marcelo Bielsa, sparking interest from both within and outside France.

New Nantes manager Claudio Ranieri is said to be an admirer of the 33-year-old Nigerian and is keen to bring him over to France's third most successful club.

Interest in the goalkeeper has also come from Turkey, where at least two clubs have offered to give the goalkeeper a big payday to move to the Super Lig.

Leicester in talks to sign Kelechi Iheanacho from Man City - souces

Peter O'Rourke

Manchester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho is closing in on a move to Leicester City, sources close to the Etihad outfit have told ESPN FC.

Iheanacho's future at City has been the subject of speculation this summer with the player struggling to establish himself in Pep Guardiola's plans.

The Nigeria international started only one game for City in 2017 -- the very first match of the year against Burnley. He was pushed down the pecking order by the arrival of Gabriel Jesus, and couldn't force his way into his manager's thoughts when the Brazil international was sidelined for two months with a broken foot.

West Ham expressed an interest, but sources have told ESPN FC that they are no longer interested and have moved onto other targets.

That has cleared the path for Leicester to land the 20-year-old, and they are in advanced talks with Manchester City over a £25 million deal.

Leicester boss Craig Shakespeare is keen to strengthen his attacking options this summer and he sees Iheanacho as an ideal partner for Jamie Vardy.

Iheanacho joined Man City's academy in 2014 after impressing with Nigeria at the Under-17 World Cup, but he had to wait until 2015 to play for the club due to work permit issues.

He broke into Man City's first team in the 2015-16 season and has scored 21 goals in 64 appearances with many of them coming off the bench.

He would become Leicester's third signing of the summer, with Vicente Iborra signing for the Foxes on Thursday to add to the earlier capture of Hull City's Harry Maguire.

Tarila Okoronwanta. I know him more as a former junior international. He was part of the 1983 Flying Eagles that featured at the 1983 WYC in Mexico alongside Wilfred Agbonavbare, Taju Disu, Yisa Shofoluwe, Humfrey Edobor and others.
That team was the first ever Nigerian team to compete in any FIFA organized competition.

I am struggling to recall his senior international career level because he was not much successful as a senior player (just like most of the other youth players of the 80s).

I knew him for his flamboyance both on and off the pitch. Very controversial also Just like Balotelli. He was really very skillful and would always pull stunts especially when we were leading in a game.

The then Radio Nigeria football commentator, late Ernest Okonkwo, had a special way of pronouncing that name. Still echos in my memory: " Tarila Okoronwanta..!" with the stress on the "nwanta...".

Golden memories.

Yeah.

That aside. The midfield combo of Muda Lawal and Henry Nwosu was difficult to break into for the most part of the early to mid 80s. Etim Esin got a couple of games between 1986-87. But Muda Lawal had retired then. Etim was a Central Midfielder Nwosu was more of an AM.

The way Kelechi Nwakali plays is similar to the way Etim played. Very skillful and comfortable on the ball with very good passing ability. Etim was part of the Chile U20 set. He was the most experienced of that crop, already playing for Gent of Belgium. But las-las Indiscipline finished him.

I shared Etim and Okoronwanta's stories with the Manu boys of 2013. (winks).
At least Ihenacho and Co would have learned at least one major lesson in football.

“Nigerian Neymar” Dennis Bonaventure Bags Brace For Club Brugge In Pre Season Tie

The fine form of Dennis Bonaventure at his new club Club Brugge continued this evening as he scored twice in their 3-0 win over Oleksandria in a pre season game played in Holland.

The Nigerian has scored in his last two games for the team he joined one month ago from Zorya in Ukraine, and he picked up from where he left off with the opening goal for his team in the 19th minute of play.

Bonaventure grabbed his brace ten minutes after the restart to power his side to a big 3-0 win over the top division Ukraine side as they step up their preparations for the UEFA Champions League Qualifiers.

The 19 year old had a breakthrough season at Zorya last season in Ukraine as he was ever present for the team in their domestic and European games in what was his fist full season as a professional footballer.

Nicknamed the “Nigerian Neymar ” all eyes will be on him when Club Brugge begin their quest for honours this season as he is expected to play a key role for the team in their bid to wrestle the league title from Anderlecht.

do4luv, actually, the original enfant terrible of naija footie was Tarila Okoronwanta. I didn't watch him play but I heard of his exploits. I believe Etim Esin took after him. It's really sad that you can't find any youtube clips of these guys anywhere. Our NFF is truly useless.

I mean, these guys all played in the late 80s to early 90s ... there's absolutely no reason why we shouldn't have their games in video somewhere.

What stops Etim Esin or a family member of his from accessing his tapes and uploading them on YouTube? They should do it. The younger generation needs these clips to improve themselves.

Omo, we're talking about the mid-80s Naija families here. How many families can afford a VCR at that time ... not even sure that they do exist at that time sef. That's why I would lay all the blames squarely at the feet on the NFF (abi na NFA). Our football house ought to have archives and records department where the tapes of all our national team matches can be assessed.

I have even taken my crusade to the NTA Lagos sef, but I was told that they could barely afford VCR tapes in those days; hence, they tend to record over used video tapes. That's naija for you, right there!

Please say it isn't so!

May God help Nigeria! If so, then we'll definitely need to beg Vince Enyeama to come out of retirement. We can't afford to have Akpeyi in goal any more. And I don't understand why they don't wanna invite Emmanuel Daniels either. He's far better than Akpeyi.
