@MikeCZA i don't know why you till try to have a intellectual discussion with the likes of Henry240, Ibwali and tdayof.

When Henry posted that defenceweb article a few days ago which sparked one of the biggest e wars this thread has seen, I attempted to discuss the contents of the article, and responded with a nice write-up.

Just as the sh1t kicked off someone quoted @Patches689 asking why he couldn't respond to Henry like i did, he mentioned that Henry never responds to factual write ups...................Im still waiting for Henry to respond to my post!!!!!

Secondly no reason to debate anything aircraft related with Tdayof, anybody who claims the Gripen can't fly inverted has absolutely 0 knowledge on the subject

Honest question.

I'm about to go grab food from my kitchen, do you think i'll require a "dedicated attack" helicopter escort?

Please reply.

Flight characteristic, narrow fusalage( presenting a smaller target to the enemy) etc maybe? But why isn't that design being taken up by aircraft designers from South Africa to China?

Last on the escort thing. There are Mi-24s in the DRC under the same MONUSCO mission in 2013 they straffed M23 rebels threatening Goma. But the rebels captured the city and the helicopter attacks were stopped.

Both the Rooivalks and Hinds are tasked with escorting UN resources in hot areas. The UN requested the Rooivalks at the prospect of a high tempo fight.

The Rooivalk is useless because rebel took over the city but Hinds are still useful in Nigeria, Libya, Pakistan, Afghanistan Syria, Iraq, etc. Terrorist took over many cities in those countries but hinds did the needful.

South Africa alway running from major confrontation from Central African Republic to Sudan then Burundi and now Congo.

Upgrade gripen C/D to E/F? And South Africa will use 9 pilots to fly 26 Gripens.

The funny part is that you still want to increase the numbers.

In case you missed the big announcement:

All 26 Gripen are now operational!!

Now you are off-ramping into stup1dity. Stay on the highway at least so we can debate. Russia, Cuba and USA (starting soon)....is that not flight training to simply get wings? Basic flying? That never had anything to do with Gripen.

How many Hawk pilots converted to Gripen in 2014, 2015, 2016 and this year? Do you know?

So in conclusion, you are unable to provide a link to your statement. You publicly just made something up? Okay cool.

Funnily you decide to deal with the analogy instead.

The numbers can increase overnight if operational requirements demand.

1. South Africa unlike during the 80s, 90s and early 2000s has one fighter Squadron.

2. Not all pilots qualified on the Gripen will be with that squadron until the end of their careers. Some will go on courses, deployed, with other squadrons etc.

3. If needed those pilots will be called up an given a refresher course and readied for deployment.

4. I am yet to see any air force in sub Saharan Africa able to deploy more than 5 fighters not lead in trainers. sad that is but only one air force is capable of such.

Can we go back to the inferior Mi-24 design again?

Democratic South Africa has never used cowboy foreign policies or chest beating or being the front man. But rather always preferred to deal with things behind doors in the shadows. Where's Riak Machar today? grin grin grin grin grin

The Gripens were brought out of storage doesn't translate to 26+ pilots. don't get it twisted.

And for the neutral parties....

http://www.defenceweb.co.za/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=48140:busy-times-for-the-rooivalk&catid=124:military-helicopters&Itemid=282

"2016 was the busiest year for the Rooivalk in terms of , with the three aircraft deployed to the United Nations mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (Monusco) firing 1 200 70 mm rockets and 11 000 rounds of 20 mm ammunition. This compares to 55 70 mm rockets in 2013, when the aircraft were first deployed to the DRC. In total, from 2013 to 2015, the Rooivalks had flown 1 163.3 hours in the DRC and fired 199 70 mm rockets and 610 rounds of 20 mm ammunition.

An idea of how busy the aircraft were last year comes from the last two weeks of December 2016, when Rooivalks engaged in combat eight times, mostly against ADF rebels in the region of Beni in the eastern DRC. Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels were mostly in the Rooivalk’s crosshairs but other smaller rebel groups/armed gangs were targeted as well. "

Of course we would have done WAY more flying and firing if we just stayed in SA and watched an insurgency build in our back yard. Then only take action when Michelle Obama starts chanting slogans.

The military is led by civilians whom handle the foreign policy. So far that seems to work well. SADC is more peaceful than all African regions then there must be something right being done.

There no point knowing you have the biggest stick that you still gotta go around not listening to others. South African soldiers were the first to deploy to Burundi.

Sudan mission is under UN and the host country didn't allow certain equipment to brought in. Meaning they enjoy or are still exploiting the crisis.

Your intentions are shown here for everyone to see that this isn't about the inferior design of the Mi-24 but rather a case of sour grapes. As seen by the rapid shift from discussing attack helicopter designs to South Africa not using cowboy foreign policies.
