We keep buying more and more OPVs, this obsession won't stop. We already have 5, why get any more?

I'll probably hold on, on the Submarines, invest in other areas first. At the minimum we should have 1 Frigate, 2 Corvettes and 4 missile boats.

There can never be enough OPVs to patrol our maritime domain 24/7 as you probably need at least 3 to keep 1 on permanent patrol. They are more suitable and cheaper to operate for the maritime threats we currently face as Covert1 alluded to.

I agree to building up the Frigate/Corvette fleet and the Submarine is still many years away anyway.

Henry's obsession with submarines is for "look at us, we have a submarine too".

Everything you acquire in the short-term has to be serviced and maintained in the long-term. As soon as BH is history, policy makers will look the other way and the military funds will dry out. Then whatever equipment bought during the war will become a burden with potential of accumulating rust.

When you buy, you buy wisely and buy what you need for the medium and long-term.

This is not necessary...Henry clearly says he prefers the funds for submarine goes for other assets'

I don't get the dick measuring contest here.
It was I who said Nigeria should acquire Submarines.
It is not a dick measuring contest, it does not have anything to do with South Africa having three God bless them.
It has everything to do with Nigeria's classified security needs.
As far back as 2010- the NN has seriously contemplated this as a need not a want, the then first lady Patience Jonathan was presented with a Miniature Submarine by the Chinese Government on her visit there.
Even @$300m a pop which is no chump change, Nigeria and the Chinese Government should put their financial heads together to work out some Financial arrangements to come up with a minimum of 2, ($600m), this is less than 10% both Countries are going to collectively spend on ONE of the Railway lines@$8.5B.

God bless you too.
Heres my point:
if NN wants to buy 3 submarines at a go that will be Nigeria's business. I don't get why someone is bordered about the funds in a recession period, Bothered about Nigeria being thankful for what she has received.
I wouldn't take panadol for another mans headache.

And then the conversation between Henry and jln115 - shows a lot of comparison between SA and Nigeria for items to be acquired.
If SA decides to increase the quantity from 3 to 5 in a recession why would it be anybody's business?

I learn a lot from this thread : please if you guys can get rid of the contests.
Thanks very much. No insult to anyone just an observation.

The navy is actually getting the money according to what I was told me.  They said  they summoned the CNS on the reason why we've been loosing enough and that much Money on bunkers etc . In which after everything,  they asked the NAVY for the amount needed to keep the Nigerian waters safe.  The amount listed and procurement details were provided by the CNS.

The bill or whatever will be passed to the Senate soon according to my source.  He said then,  they can approve the money . The money isn't for hardware procurement alone but he said as he's not a member of the house,  he can only say much when it gets to his side at the Senate but the money will be approved very soon.

I guess the NAVY,  went to PTPAL to know about the SSV after the report summoned them.

So this isn't a wish list,  all we need now is the Senate to make the approval and the navy can start shopping.

Been trying to post this write-up for the past few hours but network ish..

....about the submarine, the shit is in the list. Actually, those prices are not rot one single asset. E.g in the write up, we can see 120M USD for OPV but in CNS Proposal, the amount / units and class of the OPV are being mentioned.

The nigga ain't telling me anything again. He said I should wait for the media. So at you all angry about the submarine stuff, it's coming to us too.

I remember patches saying no SSA country can operate a sub again for now. grin

I don't care all I know now is the NAVY will soon be well fortified.

1, Except there are budgetary constraints, a Helicopter only takes 9 months to deliver. Read my initial comment again, i stated clearly that the helicopter the Chief of Naval Staff is talking about is already due for delivery.

2, Dude, i'm not referring to a wish-list. Some ofthe items referred to in the CNS comments have already been bought or are in the process of being purchased. The things you mentioned for SA are just pipe-dreams.

3, On items such as the SSV there is already budgetary provision for a large vessel from PT PAL. It is clearly right there in the link i posted.

What i stated is an MoU, is that of the LST signed with India.

4, A 40m vessel costs a minimum of 8 million dollars a unit. My post which mentioned the Seaward Defence Boat has nothing to do with price.

Read it, understand what i posted, then come back and comment.

On the list, 3 Helicopters, 1 SDB and 1 vessel from PT PAL.
-Then read my original comment as well, I said you already paid for your 3 helicopters hence why you are receiving it.....I specifically mentioned items you have yet to order.

- Why is it always a competition with you?? I never even tried to make this a comparison between SA and Nigeria. I simply stated that that Nigeria won't spend a lot on capital acquisitions because of the recession!

- since when does a so called budget provision equal " in the process of purchasing"?? Only in Henryland I guess.......once you actually ordered it and paid for it then you can talk.

-8 million SDB Vs 160 million+ SSV or LST.......not comparable!!

And you are not out of order about the Submarines. Truth be told Nigeria is punching below it's weight for fear of Pax Nigeriana and starting an unhealthy arms race in Africa but alas no one is waiting for us. So Nigeria is stepping up the tempo to show whose boss. We have the mechanism to do so bringing all elements of our national power to bear when necessary. Examples abound: Boko Haram threat suddenly we mustered 2.1 billon dollars; even though misappropriated. Now the present threats from external forces willing to arm the region and the Maritime fund materializes. Mal-administration and corruption has cost us a lot but you under-estimate Nigeria to your peril and no one does that. Nigeria can afford to acquire Frigates and Submarines on basis even if on loan and it will eventually. Russia and China are willing to give those loans. All of these is covered in the Navy's medium and long term threat Assessments and it's a continuous process. Our military also plans for purpose not for grandstanding which is why you see Equipment-to-Task purchases. The Frigates and Submarines are coming. Essentially a self sustaining blue water expeditionary fleet.

Bros, the Russians delivery of the remaining 10 Mi35m will be in 2018 which is next year. How will you deliver what have not been paid for?

The budget is under inflated so that people won't make noise. That budget was signed when Nigeria was in recession. How will you explain to people that you know what you are doing?

The same budget claimed airmen's accommodation in Shasha, Sokoto, Minna, Warri, Portharcourt, etc is just 500 million. How will you explain this knowing this is the price for a duplex in Maitama, Asokoro or VGC?

What everyone is missing here is Nigeria's defence budget is opaque to guide against hazardous effects in War. The more you look the less you see. It has it's advantages and disadvantages. Someone can decipher what that means. It's like saying choose between freedom and security. I'd rather my enemy don't know my true capabilities until the shooting starts. It's between choices, States choose between making obvious their strengths for prestige and or deterrence while others choose moderate ambivalence and still others choose secrecy. States like China, Russia, Israel, India, Pakistan and Nigeria among others are highly secretive. Everyone knows China's defence budget is many times more than what is on official paper.

Dude you're not getting the point, did you not see the link ?? It's not a witch hunt, Nigeria looses billions of dollars per yer due to illicit activities in our EEZ.

It's not some kind of proactive measure to combat an invisible threat that, the threat has already manifested and the needful should have been done a long time ago.
Look at it like an investment in the navy.

•improved navy= safer waters = economic property to help pull us out of recession.
Get it now ??

Dude all countries in the world can find an excuse to increase their defence expenditure......doesn't mean they are going to.

If Nigeria does good for you...........but from my observations your not, that's my opinion, just like you are entitled to your own.

jin115 is right in that "Nations can find excuses" to spend more on defence in this case Nigeria's EEZ and waterways been the excuse. Fact is there is still insecurity there but it has been drastically reduced in the last quarter. Besides the Hard Assets coming in can hardly be justified as relevant for riverine operations or just piracy in high seas. However Jin115 those surface and sub ships are coming in.

There is only one dominant Naval Power in the Gulf of Guinea. And Nigeria will ensure it stays that way on the Seas and in the Air.

Records In History: Brigadier General Maxwell Mitikishe Khobe is an Infantry and Armored officer of the Nigerian Army and one of Nigeria's finest Officers. He is known for leading combat forces from the front, courage, bravery and calmness in the line of fire. He graduated from the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna as an infantry 2nd Lieutenant. On advice after attending various young officer Infantry courses and exemplary leadership he transferred to the Armoured Corp of the Nigerian Army where he became a Captain. He further attended basic and advanced Armored courses both in the USA and the United Kingdom. He saw roles in Nigeria's inglorious coup history in the 70's and 80's which saw the failure of the Dimka coup and rise to power of an Armored Corp Officer in General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida. His Unit of Tanks were instrumental in the bloodless palace çoup that overthrew the Supreme Military Government of Major General Muhammadu Buhari in 1985. He was promoted Major and served four tour of duties in the ECOMOG Peace Keeping Operations in Liberia earning a medal on each tour serving under Nigeria's General Martin Luther Agwai who was commander of all ECOMOG forces in Liberia and Sierra Leone. Upon promotion to the rank of Colonel he was deployed again on foreign duties this time to Sierra Leone in 1998 after the overthrow of President Ahmed Tejan Kabbah. ECOMOG was given the mandate to restore the democratic order. Colonel Khobe based in Lungi with Nigerian Forces was given the task and when asked how long it will take said in a matter of days. After series of Strikes on SLA military HQ and Assets by the Nigerian Air Force and Navy, with him leading from the front the Nigerian led ECOMOG Ground Task Force under his command employing mostly Machine Guns and light weapons battled it's way -- defeating regular Sierra Leonean Army soldiers and drug hardened RUF rebels who made a pact with the Junta -- and entered Freetown capturing State House in about seven days. During that Operation he sustained injuries that lodged a bullet in his body. Ahmed Tejan Kabbah was restored to power. Thereafter he was promoted Brigadier General and became Chief of Defence Staff of Sierra Leone a post he held until his death two years later. The official line is he was evacuated to Lagos after falling ill with swelling to the brain but most likely he suffered complications during a process to remove the bullet lodged in his chest. He died in Lagos. The Rukuba Cantonment in Jos, Plateau State has been renamed after him.
