I thought they mostly request for a 2:1. 3.5/5.0 is an upper in Nigeria, so you are saying he is going to find it difficult?
In my case, I made a 2:2 (3.47/5.0), I have a Master's degree from UI (PhD grade). I want to go do another Masters in Canada, my plan was to follow the pgd path and be silent about the Master's degree, but I learnt winning the war with pgd at the VO's office ain't easy. so should I apply with my msc for another msc? what are my chances please...

Hello,
To show progression in your field, you should go for a PHD since you finished your msc with a high grade. You might even get funding and easy approval if you do things right.

Best wishes.

#REPOST #LONG POST ALERT

Hello guys,

Not to sound too blunt or insensitive. This is for those who ask information about which school to apply to and how to start admission process.

STEPS

1) Your first task is to use google or other search engine to search for universities or colleges.

2) Check if they have the program you need or want to study.

3) Compare and contrast schools and programs, check fees and other things including scholarships.

4) Contact the admissions or program offices, explain what you want and ask questions, they would be able to give you a better answer.

5) Then if you need opinions from people with past experiences, you can come to the forum with these sets of new information you have gathered and ask for opinions.

6) If satisfied, apply, Else, go to step one.

7) If you get an offer, go to 8.

8 ) Gather your documents depending on your situation.

9) Apply for permit.

10) Pray for approval.

11) If approved, congratulations, Else re-strategize and go to 8.

The above steps are basically the steps required for admission and permit application.

PS:

I had to make this post so that the silent readers and new comers will know the general steps required especially for admission. Please do your homework first, then come here to ask for opinions or advice.

Hello bosses,

VISA APPLICATION.

Summarily, if

1) You are going for BSc(either as a second degree or whatever fits in here), please ensure you have all the angles covered with respect to VISA application. Submit every relevant and needed documents, have enough funds and proofs to support this fund. Ensure you make the VO see why you are going for this programme especially if you are going for another degree (the VOs might not understand why you are going for this except you explain to them). The onus is on you to prove to them without reasonable doubt that you are indeed a genuine student.

2) You are going for PGD/PGC, please ensure you satisfy or meet the requirements for choosing this. It is one thing to get admitted and another thing to get your VISA approved. If you choose PGD for career change, please include supplementary evidence to back your claim and make the VO see it from your point of view, genuinely. If you chose it to meet a specific pre-requisite (like minimum grade requirement or change of course or because you have HND or whatever you think), also back it up with evidence to show why you need to do this. Showing this and how you show it is entirely up to you, but you owe it to yourself to present the best argument to support your case of being a genuine student.

3) You are going for Masters/PhD whether funded or not. Please endeavor to submit an airtight application. Having a masters/PhD admission whether funded or not does not guarantee VISA (like we have seen in most cases here). So please do your best to do what is required of you. Present your case in a way that leaves the VOs satisfied. Submit relevant and required documents . And if your case is unique (e.g course switch etc), please explain to the VOs why.

VISA approval is possible no matter the cases involved all you have to do is cross the T's and dot the I's, pray to GOD (or whoever you believe in) and trust that GOD will come through for you.

You might not get it at first (Nobody likes this though), but with perseverance and CHANGE OF APPROACH, you will get it.

Everything is truly possible to they that believe, all you have to do is believe and not relent in your efforts.

Once again, it shall end in praises for us all.

Peace,

Mazi

Thanks for the info...but i have a 2:2 which makes it quite difficult to go in directly for LL.M and most of the schools require a 2:1....
What is the way out?

If you have worked a number of years as a lawyer in Nigeria, that would make up for any low GPA. Write a powerful statement of intent and submit a graded essay/research paper by a professor from your university days in which you earned an A. That is to show your analytical and reasoning ability. If you don't have one, I am afraid you have to write one now and get it graded. One of your written court briefs in defence of a client will not suffice for a graded paper. At any length don't fear applying because of low GPA if you have a number of years of working experience under your belt. Your statement of intent needs to powerfully make a case for you on how you learned to excel in the practice of law albeit an uneventful undergraduate or law school performance in the Nigerian university.

Lol. I Hope you are finding it useful.

Admission application season for Fall is rounding up and my guess is that you are just learning the process.

My simple advise, read page 0-100 of EE thread and start the process. It is very straightforward and You can do provincial nomination.

The student route is complex and your GPA is not smiling enough. If you want to go this route, you will have to read beyond my post and strategize for admission, funding (very doubtful due to your GPA) and student visa which can also be very complicated. It is even easier to study after getting your PR.

Go and make life easier for yourself with less reading and better chances.

Shalom!

Good evening Boss. please I need clarification from you.

I just received half funding through graduate assistanship from a Prof for PhD. please is there any organization that can complete this funding for me and possibly cover my living expenses?

please is it possible to apply for VISA with half PhD funding ? Thanks

I would advise you not to go for another Master's. Go for PhD, unless you just want to do another Master's. And remember, another Master's means that you need to convince the VO why you want to do a program you already have. Such doesnt show a progression in your career. Having low CGPA wont convince the VO. Such reason might even be auto-rejection: if you didnt make good grades in Nigeria, how do you think you'd make good grades in Canada? That is the VO thinking.

Admission be it BSc/MSc/PhD is more than good grades alone. There are other factors to be considered such as:

1. Good grades (Transcripts and Tesr Scores): To the admission committee, this shows the proof of your achievements/accomplishments.

2. Resume: this shows the list of your accomplishments

3. SOP: This tells them how passionate you are about your intending program, which can also be what you intend to bring to the table and your plans for the future.
Some schools rate this factor highest.

4. LOR: This is an independent assessment of the 3 factors above. Pls make sure whoever that is writing LOR for you is not your relatives. It can be your boss in the office (professional LOR) or the lecturers that taught you, esp your thesis supervisor (Academic LOR).

In my opinion, your grade can get you a PhD offer if you write a good SOP, have a published journal paper and of course have a supervisor. When you are seeking for a supervisor, pls dont go about begging them to supervise you. Instead tell them what you intend to bring to their research group. If you write then twice and no reply, then call or leave a voice message and forget the person. Dont go about harrassing them.

PhD advantages are numerous. If you are given an offer, funding is certain for you. VO wont harrass. Your visa will be approved in less than a month.

Goodluck.

Congratulations on getting a GA. if you want more money, your best bet will be to hit the school website and check for other funding available to international student. if you're qualified, you can then proceed to find out how to apply for it. most of the time, you don't have to apply for a scholarship, you will be automatically considered for it and awarded if you meet the requirement.

Great points. I should add though that after emailing a few times, don't just leave a voice message once and forget about a prospective supervisor. Keep calling until you talk to him personally. Talking personally once can be a game changer. concerning visa, even PHD and funding is not a guarantee of visa with the VOs. So don't go applying resting on your laurels and complacent. One person here from NL here I was helping got rejected with funding before reapplying again with a stronger SOP before he was approved within a few months. MSC or PHD, this visa is not in the bag yet, till it's really there. So you owe it to yourself to give it your best shot. Whatever is worth doing is worth doing well. So put up a bulletproof application that makes a VO want to exercise discretion favorably on your behalf. You not only have to qualify, because discretion is involved you also want to make the VO like you through how you pen your application. You want to appear sincere in how you answer questions and write SOP. Sincerity boosts likability before the VOs.

I am also an applicant to University of Toronto Civil Engineering department. They stated on their website that students do not need to contact a potential supervisor. I still went ahead to contact some of them and one replied that he will talk with me in January, after I have submitted my application.

All admitted students are guaranteed full tuition waiver + CAD$16,000 minimum annual stipend.

Who is your potential supervisor ?

Hello,
You didn't ask yourself why everyone kept on ignoring your question and moving unto relevant ones. Funny enough here is not a charity club/Forum or Home where such is done. Sir/Ma, Do yourself good by sitting down and constructing a convincing SOP for yourself. Once you are done with that, you can pm some responsible monikers here to review them for you and make corrections where relevant. I must tell you that no one here will write an SOP for you. Unless you want some monikers here that will pm you and charge you money and at the end you get everything messed up. So do yourself good by doing the needful. Don't be lazy okay.

Sorry if i sounded rude.

Best of luck on your SOP.

Nobody can write SOP for you because we dont know you and what you have achieved in your career.

What I advise applicants is to write their SOP and cover those areas the VO will use and refuse them visa and let someone review it before submission.

Such areas are:

1. Purpose of visit: Why that uni? Why Canada and not Nigeria? Why do you want to spend so much in your education in Canada? What value can you add to the uni? What will the course add to your career and home country after graduation? Why that course? Your plans for the future?

2. Finance: Let the VO know the source of the money even though your sponsor will still write his own SOP

3. Current employment: Let the VO know what you have been doing and what you have achieved and this your intending course is a progression.

4. Home ties: your wife, kids, landed property, company, parents, siblings etc.

5. Travel history: If you have not traveled before, you can tell the VO that you dont like traveling. You only want to travel now because of how important this MSc/PhD is to your career. Or you can say your work doesnt allow you to travel.

NOTE: This wont come as headings but as a well scripted story and well paragraphed.

Now, you have important points to write a strong SOP.

Goodluck.

@jnyuwa @Themechanic and other Usask students and prospective students.

Please, have applied for usask masters program for the past three weeks and paid the processing fee and have uploaded the required documents. One of my recommenders has uploaded his letter, one mailed it to the graduate coordinator because she was unable to receive the mail from school and was asked to send it through email. I only have one recommendation letter left to be sent, but my admission status is still displaying 'Some items outstanding.
My question is,will they start my admission review or is it possible that they have started working on it since have paid and uploaded my documents. Even after the last recommendation letter is sent, some items will still be outstanding because one of my letters was sent through email so it didn't reflect on my page. I need answers please, thank you. Its up to three weeks now

Pls, would it be too much if I can ask you to check in on the faculty of Social Sciences grad school for a follow up?
I would be most grateful if you can but pls don't feel pressured as I know you have just resumed.
