A mother beat up her daughter because she was drunk ....replace the phrase 'she was drunk' with an adjectival noun phrase 'of something', the new sentence becomes "A mother beat up her daughter because of something" ....what is that 'something' ==> Getting drunk which qualifies the reason behind her daughter getting a beating ....her daughter was drunk igraman: 2 Likes |
Re: Test Your English Proficiency Here (picture) by femeritus: 10:55pm On Jan 06, 2018 |
This is ambiguity in action and contrary to what some have said, the sentence is grammatically correct but semantically ambiguous. The pronoun, "she" can semantically refer either to the mother or the daughter and that's why one of the best ways to disambiguate a sentence is by rephrasing the whole sentence or by repeating a part of the sentence. Using repetition method, the sentence would be, The mother beat her daughter because the daughter was drunk. Or The mother beat her daughter because the mother was drunk. 2 Likes |

Its very obvoius that this is ambiguous statement with a dangling modifier,so the person drunk here is not certain, its like saying "SLOW DOWN MEN AT WORK" who suppose to slow down, motorist or men at work? |

Re: Test Your English Proficiency Here (picture) by Nobody: 11:01pm On Jan 06, 2018 |
molesky:It's not ambiguous. Use a cause and effect to determine the answer. Who was beaten? The daughter Why was she beaten? Because she was drunk The "because" there already tells us why the action took place. The daughter is on the receiving end. Slow down men at work doesn't fit with this. The "because" changes the whole thing |

Re: Test Your English Proficiency Here (picture) by nduchucks: 11:03pm On Jan 06, 2018 |
The person who constructed the sentence has already failed the proficiency test. A proficiently constructed sentence is typically devoid of ambiguities which fail to effectively communicate the message which the writer put forth. |

I see no sense in it when you beat a drunk person. Wait till the drunkness is over the person. Na who drunk Sabi inself. |
Re: Test Your English Proficiency Here (picture) by alexmakaay(m): 11:07pm On Jan 06, 2018 |
had it been it says "THE" mother.. it means the daughter is drunk but it says "A" mother, it is still talking about the mother.. so the mother is drunk. |

It is syntactically right but grammatically assumes two meanings i.e, it is ambiguous. |
Re: Test Your English Proficiency Here (picture) by LustreChris(m): 11:15pm On Jan 06, 2018 |
As a linguist, this is what we call Structural Ambiguity, where the sentence construction, I mean, the way and manner a sentence is structured brings about more than one meaning. There is no definite answer. It depends on the way one goes about to analyse the sentence. #TreeDiagram... |

Mother or daughter. Because she (mother) was drunk. Correct . Because she (daughter) drunk. Correct also. Either way |

This is an ambiguous statement, it could be the mother or the daughter since the pronoun "she" qualified both the mother and her daughter. |
Re: Test Your English Proficiency Here (picture) by Birminghamvirgo(m): 11:34pm On Jan 06, 2018 |
i think it's the mother coz If it was to be the daughter the it would have been "she got drunk" and not bcoz "she was drunk " |

A mother beat her daughter cos she was drunk. Daughter is the one being spoken/talked about. A mother, beat her daughter, cos she was drunk. Mother is the one being spoken about. |
