Wow. God is good.
Congratulations...
freeradical:
I'm back people with yet another of my recent experience with career advancement in Canada. So you guys remember me telling you all how I got two jobs and was spoilt for choice over which to pick. Well to refresh those that may have forgotten I chose the big firm (even though the position was temporary and entry level hourly operator while the other was permanent ,full time but for a smaller firm) because I believed it had better prospects for career growth.

Well I took my humble pie and resumed for the hourly operator job on 2nd January and we were all placed on a 3day orientation and training program. It went on like that up until Thurs when something dramatic happened. After we have been dispersed to head to our various departments, as I was waiting in the lobby with my other colleagues for our department rep, I was approached by the operations manager who asked if I could spare him 5mins of my time. I obliged and he took me to a meeting room and we were immediately joined by another manager. I sensed I was going to be interviewed again, so I quickly psyched myself. The operations manager started by telling me he needed a new group manager in his department as one of his guys just got promoted and moved to another location and he feels I can fill that position. The next 30-45mins was a grilling but yet refreshing interview where I was mainly asked competency based questions that required I relate my answers very well to my past experiences (which all came from Nigeria).

Afterwards I left the interview feeling like what just happened and went back to join the rest of my hourly operator crew only for the heads upstairs to send for me again after like 30mins. When I came up this time, the operations manager was there to receive me and then he told me there is someone he will like me to meet. This time it was the overall Plant manager who is the top boss in the Edmonton plant. I almost froze to the floor but then as omo naija my head quickly correct grin. After a firm handshake with the Plant manager I was taken to a larger conference room just me and him. Then he started interviewing me again. As usual I kept relating my answers to past work experiences from Nigeria. In the end he thanked me and encouraged me to keep developing myself especially in the new job I was being offered as they strictly apply meritocracy in career advancement in d organization.

I closed from work that still perplexed at how fast my fortunes are about to change. I got home and was still narrating the whole ordeal to my wife when I got a call from the operations manager that I have got the job and if I'm willing to accept the offer. I answered in the affirmative. Then he asked me to come into the plant the next day(we were billed to attend a safety training off-site as the hourly operators) as I need to sign a new offer letter and start immediately on the new management position I was offered.

So people that was how I started the year/week as a floor staff but ended the week as a first-line manager. The purpose of my sharing this story is not to in any way pride in my efforts because I owe everything I am to God but to encourage someone/anyone who can dare to believe in the impossible. Yes miracles still do happen. It's not by he that runneth but on the Lord that showeth mercy. Be courageous my fellow naija Canadians. Go out there and claim what's yours!

Peace.

Hello All,
a wonderful thread here. Awaiting my Copr but need one or two advice on the career paths i could pursue in canada

I am an Electrical engineering technologists and i mainly have my experience in Oil and gas (1.5 yrs) and Computer hardware & Newtworking (0.5 yr). I only have certifications in oil and gas but i would love to switch to IT or computer hardware.

I am also aware I need to be registered professionally to practice as a technologist. So how easy can I get a job in IT with my experience?

Not yet sure where to settle but I am considering BC, Manitoba & Ontario. what are the career prospects in these provinces?

Carry on and listen to no naysayer!
freeradical:

Senior if you understand where I am coming from and have worn my shoes you won't only be preaching but will be shouting out on rooftops.

See me wey them reject for Nigeria, roaming about without job for the past 20months, only to enter Canada and made management in the biggest brewing company in the world in less than 3months, and you say it's not God.

Forget that Alberta effect thing for once and see the peculiarity of my case. Am I the only immigrant that landed Alberta in the past 6months? I'm I the only one who attended job seminars? What are the odds of something like this happening? Heck, even the people where I work keep telling me they haven't witnessed such a thing. That I just broke a record! Who I sabi for Canada. I've never even been to Cotonou before I took the leap of faith to come here.

I'm not saying that I'm special in any way to others but when I attribute my success to God I know what I'm saying. If I don't speak the truth and take God's glory for myself then I'm not worthy of any of his favours. That's why I'm encouraging others to believe.

Work as though it all depends on your work, and pray as though it all depends on God. We will all have and share our testimonies

Pls how do you link the PR card application and how does it work.?

Hi -

1. Log into CIC account
2. Go to "Link an Existing Application to this Account"
3. Choose Category: Permanent Resident Card
4. Input your UCI number and family name (that works). Also, date applied is the date you were stamped in on your CoPR (i.e. landing date).

I read here that once the PR card is approved, you will get a notification that your profile has been updated. You will be able to see the PR card details in your CIC profile.

I hope this helps...?

Hello my e-fam and our seniors. Pls would you advise an unlanded immigrant to apply for visitors visa for a parent. What are the chances of being granted. Especially if the immigrants are expecting a baby.

Advise needed urgently.

Hi guys,I am new to this thread. First of all, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I am considering a canadian move this year after much deliberation and thoughts.

I currently have a job which gross is about 2.7m take home 2.1m annually.

I have a UK degree no masters yet. I lived there during as well but their immigration rules didnt favour

I am sick and tired of being in a country where electricity and water is a luxury where in other climes, its a basic necessity.

All I need is advice, if canada will pay off, I would love to be guided, if it wont. Please advice and God bless us all.

Thanks.

An emphatic YES to the bolded but that depends on what your priorities are in the interim and long term.

Are you bothered about your pay, even people with 5 times your earnings still make the move while some others with half of it decide to live and die here. Like I said, it's all a matter of what your goals and priorities are and how you intend to shoot at them

This goes to landed seniors in the house. I've observed that most GTA bound people seem to be landing in Peel and Halton regions (Mississauga, Brampton, Oakville, etc). I hardly see people landing in York (maybe some North York once in a while) but haven't seen any Durham (Ajax, Oshawa axis). Rent seems to be a little cheaper on that side too. Is there a problem around those places?

Hey guys , I have a little issue
I changed my last name from abdulrasheed to Olamide on all my documents from olevel up till my passport but I still have Abdulrasheed on my birth certificate
Now I processed another birth certificate at a local government close to me and a new one was drafted stamped and all. but the guy stated that it wasn’t going to be registered else I paid additional 15k
So my question now is does the embassy verify authenticity of the birth certificate or if it was duely registered?

Try not to get stuck on a survival job (which is what the current job is), have heard that immigrants tend to fall into this trap. Getting too comfortable in their comfort zone.

Anytime I read though he comments hear I'm always pleasantly amazed at the depth o knowledge and insight we have access to for free here. God bless all of you who share your experience freely here. It really helps a lot of people around the world. Pls I need advice on an issue. I just got a new job offer that's in my field (technical maintenance and repairs) and I like the learning opportunity it offers and also the Canadian experience in my field. But I'm having second tots about taking it for the following reasons: 1. It's 3 hrs away from the city where I currently reside with my family so I will have to commute daily, weekly, or move there. 2. I already have a customer service job that pays like $7 less but my present job has opportunities for bonuses from sales which can be more than your salary in a good month. My wife works at same job and if we move together for d New job she will have to stop work. That means temporary loss of second income. 3. The new job is a one man business but my present job is with a national organization so the medical and other plans are better than with the new offer and I'm considering this cos I have kids. 4. If I move alone temporarily I will have to incure additional rent expenses and other costs that would've been shared if I dey with family. 5. Because the loction of the new job offer is in a bigger city, expenses there are a bit higher ( cost of renting, childcare, future house purchase etc) than where I am now. But there are also more job opportunities in a bigger city with higher salaries.

The main reason I'm still considering the new offer is because it's in my field and the few days I spent trying it out showed there is a lot to learn from the job. I'm just scared of jumping from a tree I am familiar with to an unknown, smaller, but promising tree. The bills are already lined up and there is no room for error (lol) but my heart really wants the new job cos it's in my field and I will derive joy from doing it. But is joy all that matters? Please advice

In my opinion, the lack of Canadian experience holds no water after being invited for an interview, as this is clear from your CV. I prefer to see it this way - if you are thirsty in a foreign land and you are presented with 3 drinks, a coke, a drink with a strange label and a non-labelled drink, which would you choose if they all have the same colour and in similar bottles? Naturally, you would pick the coke because it is familiar (safe), but if you taste all three before making a choice, it can no longer be said that the choice is based on familiarity.
vcole:
you got the wrong message from my post. It'll be ridiculous for me to view this issue from a racist perspective. It is not about being white or black. It is about competence. On a global playing field, where does a Nigerian educational qualification rank and how does it compete with a Canadian or European qualification? In professional fields, how do Nigerian certifications rank on a global scale? How many countries have a reciprocal agreement with Nigerian professional organizations? What is the work culture in Nigeria and how similar or divergent is it from that of Canada? Is the European work culture more similar to that of Canada? And how do these factors affect the job seeking Nigerian on a global scale?
As a hiring manager, it is imperative to choose a candidate who is best qualified and skilled for the job.

If things are viewed from this perspective then I believe it is in the best interest of a landed immigrant looking to build a rewarding career to explore opportunities that would enhance his/her qualifications or gain relevant experience that would open doors for advancement.

That depends: Is there a close relative in Canada that can invite your mom? I was in a slightly similar situation some time ago but in my case we had landed earlier that year already and returned to naija, God blessed us with another pregnancy and I needed to go with mom but I couldn't invite her cuz records may show I'm currently not in Canada. So in my case, mom and I left naija on the same day but she headed to Houston. Soon as I got to Canada we processed her Canadian visa from Houston and she got it in about 2weeks.

My mom applied for and was issued a canadian trv prior to our landing as we were expecting a baby in June and planned to land in April. She sponsored herself. Applied as a tourist, booked a hotel accomodation, sponsored herself and listed a friend of hers who lives in Toronto as one of the persons she would be visiting but did not obtain a letter of invitation from her. She did a paper app and it was processed in 6 weeks. She does have travel history to several countries including Canada in the past so that may have been a factor and when she came here she went to Toronto first as stated in her app before heading our way.
