England vs Nigeria: Ikeme set for Wembley showdown
SUPER EAGLES By: Ayodeji Tunde
28/02/2018

Some cheering news has been shared concerning recuperating erstwhile Super Eagles first choice goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme.
The Super Eagles Coach Gernot Rohr has given his words that Ikeme will play a part in the England vs Nigeria friendly billed to take place at the Wembley Stadium on June 2, 2018.
The Franco-German tactician in an interview with the BBC hinted that Ikeme will be given the honour to take the ceremonial kickoff of the much-anticipated friendly between the Three Lions and the Super Eagles which will be taking place few days before the 2018 World Cup kicks off in Russia.

Rohr further confirmed that he has been in touch with Ikeme and he is happy with the progress made so far by the shot-stopper though he was clear that the 31-year old cannot make the final shortlist for the Mundial proper.
"He (Ikeme) is doing better and better but it will be very short time for him to make it to the World Cup but he will be with us... he will be invited to do the kickoff of our friendly in Wembley". Rohr said
The England, Nigeria match will be only the third between both countries at senior level.
It will serve as the Super Eagles’ final preparatory game for the FIFA World Cup finals in Russia, with their first match against Croatia in Kaliningrad coming exactly two weeks after.

Rohr Confirms – Carl Ikeme Back In Super Eagles Fold For World Cup Friendly Against England

March 2, 2018019

The goalkeepers crisis rocking the senior national team of Nigeria became an issue of concern to many Nigerians after first choice goalkeeper Carl Ikeme was diagnosed with Leukaemia.

Ikeme’s unfortunate diagnosis left the Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr with few options in the goalkeeping department, and after using Daniel Akpeyi for a while. Ikechukwu Ezenwa is now the first choice shot stopper of the team.

Ezenwa upstaged the Chippa United safe hands after injury ruled him out of Nigeria’s back to back World Cup 2018 Qualifiers tie against Cameroon in Uyo and Yaounde respectively.

Despite the performances of the duo Nigerians are still skeptical of their abilities, with many clamouring for Deportivo La Coruna B goalkeeper Francis Odinaka Uzoho to man the post at the World Cup.

Uzoho won the heart of many Nigerians with an impressive 45 minutes display in the Eagles 4-2 win over Argentina in a friendly game last year after his breakthrough at the LaLiga ‎, where he made three first team appearances.

Speaking in a BBC World Service programme monitored by Owngoalnigeria.com, Rohr confirmed that Ikeme will take the traditional kick off before Nigeria’s final World Cup 2018 friendly game against England.

It means he will once again be back in the Eagles fold for the first time since he was diagnosed with Leukaemia just before the start of pre season training at English Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers.

This is a rubbish article..

Ikeme will be doing the Kickoff in the friendly against England. It does not mean, he is back in the team.

I watched a replay of that goal like 6 times

Similar to the free-kick goal scored against him in the Argentina friendly.

He obviously took off before the ball was played and guessed wrong the direction in which the ball was traveling.

This seems to be one of his major weaknesses.

But from the way that Chippa United fan and tbaba put it, I was expecting something worse.

Is it not similar to one of the free-kick goals Enyeama conceded against Messi at the last WC?

The distance was too far for Akpeyi to concede from that. He should not be conceding from that distance.

For Messi's goal, Enyeama stood far away from the left side, probably expecting Messi to change direction. Even if Enyeama was well positioned, he could have still missed the ball.

I think, the Chippa fan is also reacting to past Akpeyi's error . I understand, he made an error in his previous match.

I am not holding brief for Akpeyi but I had to assess that goal with an open mind. You tbaba called it a " blunder" .You exaggerated it, which is why really I am taking my time to discuss it.

I would have just watched and moved on.Unfair criticism.

You cannot say Akpeyi should not be conceding from that distance when goalkeepers even concede from goals played from the centre circle.

He just initially misjudged the intended direction of the ball. He expected the player to aim at the space he left behind the defence wall but the player unconventionally played it towards the position where Akpeyi initially stood.

It is almost the same thing Enyeama did against Messi. Anticipating in the wrong direction.

Is the wrong anticipation not a blunder? He misread the ball from such a distance and it led to a goal.

Goalies who concede from the center circle are mostly poorly positioned which makes it difficult to recover.

For a closer free kick, there is less reaction time than from those that are far away.

Also note, that he conceded from the area which the keeper is supposed to cover and not the area of the wall.

Blunder: A mistake/error

A blunder is not just a mistake or error. It is more like an unpardonable mistake, or a stupid mistake.

In order words it is worse than a mistake or error.

When you first posted that video I was even thinking he mistakenly threw a ball into his own net or mistakenly threw a ball straight to an opponent who now scored and stuffs like that.

I had to watch that video to the end still waiting for the blunder.

actually Akpeyi exhibit no confidence in goalkeeping, with his level of experience, he shouldn't be jumping up and down looking very confused when he see a shot. He's not the type keeper you expect to make outrageous saves just the regular ones.

I guess we are looking at this from different perspectives..

When a keeper concedes from a fairly routine free kick from that distance and in the area he was supposed to cover, i would rank it as a blunder. In your opinion, you think that is harsh.

It is not as if the free kick taker did anything extraordinary.

If a GK at 30 doesn't know how to position well for a free-kick that far, you can't train it out of him.you can't teach old dogs new tricks.. and in all your e experience sir, would you expect this kind of stupid mistakes from a supposedly world cup goalie?

Even the first goal he conceded makes him look bad..it should be difficult for any good Gk to be beaten from 25yards out..I know some shots have power, curl and dip..this goal doesn't even come close..please this guy would be our downfall at the world cup if he starts..

You call that a routine free-kick from that distance. Have you not seen goalkeepers conceding free-kicks from even a further distance than that?

Did you notice the change in trajectory of the ball?

You would rather down play the quality of the free-kick.

How is this different from the one Enyeama conceded against Messi?

Comparing this free-kick to messi's free-kick is like comparing a Ferrari to a fiat punto..all messi's free-kick have power, dip and curl..those 3 combinations are difficult for any gk so I could make a case for Enyeama..and perhaps that messi's fk went over the wall and not the area covered by Enyeama..how many keepers in the world can truly even save that fk by messi..
