Portuguese Club Sporting Lisbon Eager To Sign Ajayi From Unwilling Al Ahly

Portuguese club, Sporting Lisbon, have emerged as the favourites to sign Nigerian forward, Junior Ajayi from Egyptian side, Al Ahly this summer, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Ajayi, 22, joined Al Ahly in September, 2016 from Tunisian club, CS Sfaxien and has established himself as one of the key members of the team.

He has attracted interest from a number of European clubs with Al Ahly adamant they won’t part with one of their most important players.

CSN scooped from a source close to the former Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan player, that Sporting Lisbon who finished third in the Portuguese league during the just concluded season and will compete in the Europa League next term, are now in pole position to secure Ajayi’s services.

“There is a possibility that Junior will leave Al Ahly very soon with Sporting Lisbon as his destination,” the source informed CSN.
“Talks are still ongoing but you know in transfer dealings, things can change at any time as they are not the only club who want to sign him.”

The former Shooting Stars of Ibadan player has made 32 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils this season and has scored nine goals and delivered 11 assists.

Super Eagles coaches didn’t select him in Nigeria’s 30-man provisional squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia despite earning his first call-up for the team’s friendly games against Poland and Serbia.

Former Nigeria defender, Taribo West has posited that the Super Eagles do not have what it takes to stop Lionel Messi when they face Argentina in their third Group D match of 2018 FIFA World Cup in Saint Petersburg on June 26, but remains optimistic that the Gernot Rohr’s wards will impress as the dark horses of the tournament,

The former AC Milan strongman who spoke to Completesportsnigeria.com in Lagos on Saturday, said the Super Eagles’ defenders need special tactics to be able to stop the Argentine, but warned that there should not be much concentration on the Barcelona striker.

“We have good defenders, but from what I have seen, they don’t have what it takes to stop Messi at the World Cup. Stopping Messi requires special tactics which they don’t have,” the former Eagles defender told Conmpletesportsnigeria.com

“We don’t have the kind of defenders that can mark out Messi for 90 minutes and that will make it difficult for the Super Eagles. My advice is that they should not concentrate too much on him. During my playing days, you need just one player that will mark him out and throughout 90 minutes, there won’t be breathing space for him.”

Speaking on the Gernot Rohr’s team generally, Taribo expresses confidence that with excellent preparations, they will excel in Russia.

“If you see the way they are preparing for the World Cup and the way they played during the qualifying series, I will say they did incredibly well and if they can continue like that, definitely they will excel in Russia,” the Super Eagles’ rugged defender at France’98 and Korea/Japan 2002 World Cups told CSN.

“I believe this team will do well because they are strong and young and that is some of the things you need in a team.

”A team like this present Super Eagles can create surprises and also go far in the World Cup.”

Nigeria will face Croatia, Iceland and Argentina in the Group D of the 2018 World Cup, and Taribo believes the Super Eagles will advance to the Second Round.

“I have no doubt that they will make it from the group as long as they play as a team and remain focused,” he said.

The 46-year-old impressed in his opening press conference as Arsenal manager and, with formalities now out of the way, work must begin on bolstering the squad he has inherited at the Emirates.

While Emery praised the ‘talent’ of his new players, there’s no doubt that the Gunners will be busy this summer, with the defence and midfield in dire need of reinforcements.

Chief executive Ivan Gazidis gave a glowing account of Emery’s performance during the interview process and has now highlighted the Spaniard’s forensic attention to detail.

It was Emery’s impeccable knowledge of every aspect of Arsenal Football Club and, in particular, his detailed analysis of youngsters such as Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Alex Iwobi which caught Gazidis’ attention.

‘What was really impressive was when you scratched the surface to go deeper and deeper and deeper,’ he told Arsenal’s official website.

‘If we were speaking about one of our young players, if we targeted Ainsley Maitland-Niles for example, Unai knows Ainsley.

‘He’s watched him, he’s familiar with his patterns of play, his capabilities, he’s very excited about his potential and was able to talk about how excited he was to work with Ainsley, to develop him as a player.

‘Very specifically, when you asked the follow-up question and the follow-up question and the follow-up question, you’d get more and more depth about how exactly he would do that, exactly how him and his team would work with an individual player to develop them into the best player they can possibly be and also within the team dynamic.

‘There are a lot of platitudes in the game of football, a lot, and people can speak at a surface level very easily to sound confident and impressive.

‘What’s impressive to me is when you scratch through that and you get deeply involved in what exactly they mean.’

According to The Times, Emery’s camp are also looking closely at Iwobi ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.

It’s claimed that coaches in Spain were taken aback by the Nigerian’s performance against Barcelona in 2016 and saw enormous potential.

At the time, Iwobi was yet to even make his full Premier League debut but produced an assured performance in Arsenal’s 3-1 defeat at the Nou Camp.

While Iwobi is yet to fulfill that early potential, Emery is confident that he can get the best out of the 22-year-old.

Emery highlighted Arsenal’s rich history of producing youngsters following his unveiling.

‘I’ve never seen anything handed out for free in football,’ he said.
