NIGERIAN AIR FORCE RESUMES FEEDING OF OVER 1000 PUPILS IN DALORI, BAMA IDP CAMPS

As academic activities resume in Dalori and Bama Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camps in Borno State, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has resumed the daily feeding of over 1,000 school pupils in the 2 camps. The Chief of Medical Services, Air Vice Marshal Saleh Shinkafi, revealed this today, 10 July 2018, at the NAF Headquarters. The school feeding initiative, which commenced in 2015, is part of the commitment of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, towards addressing the medical and other welfare challenges among children in the 2 IDP camps. Within the first 3 months of commencement of the school feeding programme in 2015, attendance of pupils in the schools at the IDP camps increased by more than 50 per cent and, as at 10 May 2018, NAF had provided over 372,000 meals for the pupils. The NAF school feeding programme in the Northeast is sponsored largely from donations by private companies and voluntary quarterly cash contributions by NAF personnel, as instituted by the CAS.

The introduction of free feeding for school-going children in the 2 IDP camps in Borno State is part of the resolve by the NAF leadership to bring succour to Nigerians who had been displaced by insurgency. For instance, a Level 2 hospital was established in Dalori IDP Camp in 2015 and another emergency hospital was established in Bama IDP Camp in 2016 to meet the healthcare needs of IDPs. It was in the process of providing healthcare at the NAF hospital in Dalori IDP Camp in 2015 that the acute problem of malnutrition among the children was observed. Accordingly, in order to prevent serious medical crisis, the NAF leadership, through the Medical Services Branch, immediately commenced the feeding of children at the hospital within the camp and later transferred the feeding programme to the school within the camp. Following the success of the school feeding initiative in Dalori, the programme was replicated at the Bama IDP Camp in 2016.

It is noteworthy that since assumption of office in 2015, the current NAF leadership has conducted series of medical outreach programmes in the Northeast and different parts of the country during which it has provided free medical care to over 495,439 civilians. The provision of free medical care and the school feeding initiative are part of the NAF’s humanitarian efforts, targeted at winning the hearts and minds of members of the communities affected by the Boko Haram insurgency as part of the strategy for fighting the insurgency.

President Kenyatta, top US military commander renew commitment to peace in Somalia, South Sudan

NAIROBI, 11 July2018 (PSCU) President Uhuru Kenyatta held a meeting with General Thomas Waldhauser, the US-Africa Command Commander this morning where they discussed regional security including the situation in Somalia and South Sudan.

During the meeting, President Kenyatta who has been at the forefront in the efforts to restore peace and stability in the two East African countries told General Waldhauser that Kenya is firmly committed to the cause of finding peace in the two Nations, an aspiration that has in the past been negated by lack of adequate capacity, and proper military commands.

Political turmoil in South Sudan, said President Kenyatta, has been made worse by unwarranted fear and mistrust between supporters of President Salva Kiir and Dr. Riek Machar.

President Kenyatta however said hope to restore stability in both countries is not lost and partner-states working towards peace in the region will remain committed to the cause.

“We shall give it everything we can. But it is not going to be easy”, President Kenyatta said in reference to South Sudan.

President Kenyatta said Somalia faces further challenges of mistrust and internal politics between the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and regional governments.

“The deteriorating relationships between the TFG and the regional governments is of major concern to us,” said President Kenyatta adding that the conflict is a major security threat to Kenya and the region.

He called for structures that will enable the TFG to work with the regional governments.

The President counselled that for peace and stability to be restored in Somalia, its leadership needs to refocus its attention and energies into addressing issues that cause national divisions and avoid being drawn into partisan distractions.

On his part, General Waldhauser underlined the need for Somalia to strengthen its leadership structures adding that the instability is partly due to indirect interference from certain Gulf countries.

“We are ready to continue assisting the country so long as the federal government is willing to accept our support”, said Gen Waldhauser who called for neutrality from the Gulf countries that are extending their differences to the Horn of Africa nation.

“The differences and clashes in these Arabian countries are playing out in Somalia. We call for their neutrality”, said the top Us military officer.

The General said the US will continue its training programmes for the Somalia National Army (SNA) with the expectation that the Federal Government will work on the requisite structures for the trained personnel to operate effectively.

Turning to the situation in South Sudan, President Kenyatta said there is need to make both President Kiir and Machar to truly appreciate the benefits of working together.

The President said that the IGAD partner states are committed to keeping pressure on the two leaders to work together for the benefit of the people of South Sudan.

President Kenyatta regretted that the South Sudan problem had taken an ethnic dimension between supporters of the two leaders.

Gen. Waldhauser said the US is committed to continued partnership with Kenya and lauded President Kenyatta's upbeat economic agenda.

Responding to a question raised by the military leader, President Kenyatta said he Big 4 Agenda aims at creating social harmony among Kenyans so as to create a favourable environment for wealth and job creation through manufacturing , affordable housing, universal healthcare and and food security.

President Kenyatta further said that the aim of his government is to establish an irreversible trajectory of growth and development that is totally dependent on robust institutions.

General Waldhauser was accompanied to the meeting held at State House Nairobi by Brigadier General James Craig, the US Horn of Africa Commander and US Ambassador Robert Godec.

MAKE GOOD USE OF THE NEW FACILITY - COAS charges troops

The Chief of Army Staff(COAS) Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai has charged officer's and soldiers working in Army Headquarters to make good use of the facilities in the new AHQ Complex Annex. He made the call today in Abuja while unveiling the new AHQ complex Annex signalling the commencement of use of the facilities.
The COAS further noted that the complex is inline with his vision to ensure better working environment for troops under command.
In his vote of thanks, the Chief of Logistic (Army) Maj Gen Emmanuel Kabuk thanked the COAS for providing the fund which was judiciously used for the construction of the new complex. He added that the complex is furnished with modern office equipment. He urged young officer's who want to attend leadership position to go back and study the achievements of the COAS.
The new AHQ Complex Annex consists of the following units: AHQ Clinic, Laboratory, AHQ Restaurant, Officer's Canteen, Soldiers Canteen, AHQ Fitness Centre, AHQ Shopping Complex, AHQ Drivers Lounge, AHQ Barbing Salon and AHQ complex Generators Station with Cat 750 KVA. Is worthy of note that all units is equipped with Ultra Modern Facilities.

The event was attended by some Principal Staff Officers of the Army Headquarters.

What they have there are assembled and mostly government owned and government funded.

Nigeria is going into actual production not assembled stuff. Most importantly, we have several private defense industries springing up which is far better.
