A total of 238 students of Covenant University in Ota, Ogun, on Friday graduated with first class honours’ degrees at the institution’s 2017/2018 Convocation.
The institution’s Vice-Chancellor (V-C), Prof. Aaron Atayero, disclosed this during the university’s 13th Convocation, the Conferment of Honorary Doctorate Degrees and presentation of prizes to its deserving students in Ota.

The News of Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the university graduated 1,887 students for 2017/2018 Academic Session. They comprised: 238 first class honours, 746 second class upper honours, 452 second class lower, 86 third class and 365 post-graduate students.

NAN reports that Miss Salami Toluwani, from the Department of Industrial Chemistry, College of Sciences emerged the best student with a Cumulative Grade Point of Average (CGPA) of 4.99.

Atayero said that the graduates were not trained to seek but to provide employment and where they get employed, they should distinguish themselves as attested to by employers’ of labour.

“All over the world, our graduates are always breaking the grounds in many human endeavours,” he said.
Atayero attributed the success and milestone achieved by the institution to the high quality of its teaching linked with high quality research.

He implored the graduating students to deploy all what they had been through in solving the nation’s problems: leadership, unemployment, poverty, wanton killings, infrastructural deficit and poor health services.
Also speaking, Dr David Oyedepo, the Chancellor of the university, said there was the need to redefine democracy in the country so as to surmount its challenges.

He noted that leadership was not just about talking but taking the lead. Oyedepo said that leadership was not an endowment, but a product of outstanding accomplishments.

He said that the vision of the institution was to raise a new generation of leaders in every area of human endeavour, which would engender great changes in Nigeria, African and the world at large.

“I implore you all to start thinking about changing and start thinking of solutions to challenges confronting the nation,” he said.

Oyedepo advised the graduating students to imbibe and uphold the core values of the institution.

In a keynote address, Mrs Ibukun Awosika, the Chairman, First Bank of Nigeria PLC., advised the graduating students to identify every problem as an opportunity to proffer solutions to them, especially, those confronting the country.

Awosika said that the graduates had better opportunities because they had real value of education from a good university that impacted quality education on them.

“Challenges do not destroy vision but they empowered vision,” she said.

Awosika, however, advised the graduates not to allow circumstances to overcome their sense of vision.
She also enjoined them to seek knowledge with character, adding that without character, it would be difficult to actualise their dreams.

I advise you don't just post for posting sake.

This is Covenant University. Many of their parents are wealthy, influential and connected. Many of the graduates can either be fixed up or traveled outta the country.

If it had been public universities, your post could be appropriate.

Haterz are coming

We had a 15% First class turnout! But I believe CU would have done better If they had implemented the third semester system which was initially proposed by the former VC. This would have ensured that people with failed courses could retake the courses during holidays(summer) rather than piling failed courses for people during new sessions.

CU should understand that students who failed during normal semesters are usually too demoralized to learn anything in carryover classes. Plus this carryover classes, especially the likes of CHM212(physical chemistry) are usually overbloated with carryover students that it makes learning uncomfortable for everyone.

Lastly on piling carryovers. The consequences of pilling carryovers in a public uni might be minute and limited but in a private school it is devastating, especially to middle class families who have to dole out an extra 1 million naira.

And for anyone who thinks that CU is producing too much First class degrees please chew on this. There is no telling what people can do if giving the right environment to succeed. And yes some of the numerous people who make First Class degrees in UK universities may find it difficult to replicate in OAU. But that doesn't make OAU better than Lancaster or University Of Edinburgh, but a reflection of a choking system in the Nigerian University System which prioritises difficulty and stress over learning.

It pays to do right.
Covenant is the school to break the regulated first class yoke. Before CU started encouraging it, people see it as a sign of weakness but today that is changing as unilag and ui are towing same path. Congrats to the graduand.

If the NUC regulates and the school award first class to those who met the criteria I see nothing wrong in it. Congrats to the graduates.

I know industrial chemistry is quite a challenging department. I know because I had friends who "carried over" physical chemistry
till final year in the same Covenant. But because it was hard for you doesn't mean it wouldn't be easy for someone else.

Chemistry doesn't hard for me try to understand that... You didnt study the course so I won't argue with u, is like say someone did 70 courses and had 69 A's and 1B, that can only happen in waec.....oga forget that thing it can only happen in private universities and don't forget say we did some crazy practicals. If the guy come to unilorin am very sure that he will make first class but that 4.99 is not fucking possible.

Lol but a unilag produced three graduates with 5.0 in a single convocation so what's a 4,99. It's no issue for me if a unilorin puts a peg on what her student community can attain in scores.

But the important questions are these: Are the CU graduates less knowledgeable than their Unilorin counterparts? Are the CU graduates with less practical/research experience as their unilorin counterparts? Would the Unilorin students perform as good as the CU counterpart if given the same environment in CU? Would they do well if cheered and encouraged to excel like the CU management does for her student

You need to understand that the chaos in any Nigerian public university isn't what any sensible private university would try to emulate..

There were times some dept had to register 32 units (excluding carry overs). around 2007/2008. People assume CU is a walkover place.
I remember seeing UNN and other eastern school undergrads parade their own SIWES as 15 units course as against 6 units in CU.

There is a guy I know of in secondary school who went ahead to grad with all As in UI. Atilola used to his name.
