Coach of Deportivo La Coruna Carmelo del Pozo says he has explained ‎to Nigerian goalkeeper Francis Odinaka Uzoho the true context of the words he used in describing his demands for a starting spot few days ago.

While reacting to the position of Uzoho at the club after the signing of another goalkeeper in Ortola, the coach said the Nigerian won’t be his first choice due to several reasons which he has explained to the 19 year old.

Uzoho’s post on social media shortly after the manager’s comment suggest he was replying to the coach as he said ” We all Know What This Means Now”, although he later cleared the air on what the post is all about, insisting it’s nothing close to what the coach said.

Coach Carmelo didn’t stop there as he once again spared time during the unveiling of David Simon to criticise Uzoho once again, comments which many felt has racial connotations based on the context.

” I hope they do not forget that they are where they are thanks to Deportivo, because they opted for them, others coming from Africa when they did not have clothes or money”, a statement which immediately sparked a reply from Uzoho on his verified Twitter handle.

” I came to this world without clothes, so it’s not so bad that I also came to Europe without clothes. At home they taught me to choose my battle wisely”, he posted before he later deleted it.

The battle between the duo drew a response from the club president Tino Fernadez who even backed the Nigerian goalkeeper at the World Cup and subsequently apologised to him on the comments made by the coach.

” We apologise, and in fact it is very important for Francis to play. He cannot be third goalkeeper or even second, even if it’s a Primera team”, the president said during his take on the feud between the duo.

During the presentation of another new player in Domingos Duarte, the coach revealed that he spoke with Uzoho and aplogised to them about the comments which many viewed as a racist‎ remark.

Forget this long talk about private universities. Almost all of them are not even up to any standard. The other day I was with a friend who is lecturing in Landmark and he said that immediately after every exam you will see parents coning around to tell you that they paid millions as tuition fee so their wards cannot fail and what choice do you have? So they create a false sense of academic excellence but even there the learning structure is worse than it is in public schools. I find it appalling that people will want to talk about good schools and add private universities.

Very untrue. You cannot generalize when it comes to private universities, take it from me. It’s not business as usual in every school. As it stands it’s private universities that would save Nigeria’s tertiary education. As ironic as that may sound, mark my words. I know a private university that graduates fully baked students ready for the REAL world. Many of these graduates who take up running businesses are doing fine. Solid education no be about read and pour out for exam. Take it from me.

I was working with an Organization who wanted to bring some major energy investments to Africa. I tried to suggest Nigeria but they were reluctant because Nigeria is too 'complicated'. They would rather do the projects in smaller African countries or a "progressive" state within Nigeria not national level.

Our GDP is the highest in Africa but it is peanuts per capita. We have one of the lowest electricity generation per capita on the continent. We are plagued with unemployment, disease and crime. What exactly makes us not 3rd world.

In 2011, i wanted to rent a house but when the landlady learnt that i was originally from Nigeria, she immediately became suspicious and was making some crazy requests. Apparently, she was almost duped by yahoo yahoo from Nigeria. This is the kind of image that we create for ourselves all over the world. Criminals, drug dealers, prostitutes etc..

We have so many talented people within and outside Nigeria but the environment does not help them thrive or reach their potential. Mediocrity is celebrated, Corruption is a culture. A person who tries to do the right thing is public enemy number 1. The people are only interested in public office to make money. Political officers flaunt their stolen wealth to us and they still have hoards of supporters. We enable, support and cheer the corruption that holds us back as a country.

So yes, Nigeria is a third world country and unless we get serious minded people in the right places, it will remain the same for a long time.
