Abia set to Commence Remediation Work at Isuikwuato Erosion Site Following the directive of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu dispatching an inter-ministerial team to urgently visit the site of the gully erosion along Isuikwuato-Okigwe federal road, the state Ministry of Environment is set to commence remediation work at the site this weekend. This was revealed by the State Commissioner for Environment, Dr Aham Uko, in an interview with newsmen this evening in Umuahia. According to him, “Our team of Engineers have conducted a thorough evaluation of the Isuikwuato site today and we hope to commence the remediation this weekend”. Also speaking, the State Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi Kalu, expressed appreciation to the Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, for his prompt response to the situation along the federal road that links Abia State to Imo and Ebonyi States. In his words: “This administration is demonstrably focused on responding to the needs of the people of the state who graciously elected Dr Ikpeazu as their Governor and have supported him strongly. While we recognize that the primary responsibility of arresting the gully erosion is constitutionally that of the federal government, the state is ready to intervene to ensure that our people find safe passage way pending when help will come from relevant federal agencies. “During the last Niger Delta Council held in the State, we took officials of the federal ministry of Niger Delta to that site and pleaded for urgent intervention to save the road from total collapse. Sadly, the gully has progressed very fast and we now have a situation where vehicles cannot pass through that road. “As a responsible government, we cannot fold our hands and watch our people suffer while waiting for help from Abuja. We are set to undertake palliative work to remedy the situation while still pleading with the federal government to come to our aid by declaring that area and others threatened by rampaging gully erosion as ecological disaster zones with a view to deploying the resources of the country to deliver a permanent solution to the erosion menace at Isuikwuato and other locations in the state", he concluded. A report from NYSC this morning stated that 600 corp members applied to relocate to another state after they discovered that they were posted to Anambra state. This is the second time I'm seeing this thing take place in the east. First it was Enugu now Anambra. Why do non-igbos never want to visit the east for any reason at all? There is definitely a problem of reputation and defacement in the east and it is so bad that most people never want visit the east for any reason at all. People, most especially youth corpers prefer to serve in the SS, SW and North than serve in the east and this is a major problem that must be solved. How can we make the east more attractive to outsiders? |
Re: . by Afam4eva(m): 4:19pm On Sep 16, 2018 |
nnamdijonathan:That's not entirely true. The North is always the last resort for most youth corpers. After that, people always want to be close to home, which means that people who live in Lagos want to be posted in lagos or the states close by (Ogun, Oyo etc). Thirdly, people go where they think they will have fun. I've seen people choose to go to Akwa Ibom and Calabar because they feel they will enjoy their stay. In the east, Enugu has the best reputation as most people going to the east will prefer to go to Enugu before aywhere else because Enugu has a more positive image than other states. The thing is that the east has a bad reputation such that people who haven't been there already have a preconceived notion about it. It's only when they go there that they realize that it's not as bad as being painted. That's why those corpers withdrew their relocation. But i think we should do more in bolstering our image. Unfortunately, our leaders are not good image launderers. 2 Likes |

How did you come about that? Do you know that issue of redeployment was first reported in Enugu before it escalated to other SE states? Do you know that people tend to serve in states that have more economic opportunities of which Enugu is below the ladder in that area? Do you know that state allowance equally plays its role and general security as well. The number of corp members serving in the East has Anambra as the highest followed by Imo before Enugu. Stop allowing your emotions to becloud your sense of reasoning all the time. Afam4eva: 1 Like |

Afam4eva: The main issue now is how can we revive our image. You don't know how annoying it feels when you see people rating the likes of Akwa Ibom, Ogun, Osun, Cross river and Oyo over Enugu, Anambra and IMO. Something must be done ASAP. 1 Like |

nnamdijonathan:They apply to jettison Igboland, their hugeeee losssses! That is ignorance on rampage. What reputation aside the smear campaign on-going since 1970? That also shows how much the gutter media and parental miseducation have gone to damage people's perspectives on Igboland.Ask some of them the reason for their aversion and you hear some of the most ridiculous trash ever vomited by a supposedly educated person. Have there ever been a case(s) where the Igbo, collectively or individually attacked a visitor or people of other ethnicity based on real or perceived offence? In fact,in Igbo worldview and value system, the visitor is king. Isi onye obia ka isi onye nwe uno (the visitor is more important than the host). This tradition is both literal and factual. Sectarian crises have never happened in Igboland but it is a weekly occurrence in the north with far reaching casualties and losses. Ritual killings and diabolic acts live and breathe in the west so whats the whole issue all about?. It is well.We owe ourselves the duty to alter the narratives. 8 Likes 2 Shares |

nnamdijonathan:We are already providing the solutions by the ideas and pictures of our best endowments of the entire Igboland showcased on this thread and other Igbo related thread.By all means,we have shown Igboland is more livable and habitable than other regions even with the deprivations staring us in the face. It is all about altering the prevailing narratives. The media war targeted against Igbos for close to 50 years cannot be erased overnight. It only took the social media boom to alter much of the entrenched stereotypes and negative smear campaigns. It is work in progress. Again,we have to start telling our stories. This is where the media comes in. Lagos acquired much of the clout it posses today strictly based on media advocacy. A trip to Lagos shows a city living on hype and propaganda. Time for Igbo sons of means to invest in media and tell our stories better. You watch CNN and see various countries and regions showcasing their beauties in well packaged adverts. Check "Incredible India". "Maylasia heaven" and other similar demos. I recall Ohakim once pulled such a stunt with Imo state on CNN. Chimaroke also pulled modest media stunt with his Ebe Ano identity. It is all about consistency and the consciousness will begin to form in the minds of people. Above all,we all owe ourselves the duty to be properly educated about Igboland to counter all the wrong narratives in our individual capacities. 7 Likes |
