@ bold; so because you pay her 30K a month therefore your maid should really become a slave undecided Mopping the house twice a day and on top of that sweeping the house as much as possible again shocked Something you yourself can't do you want it done by someone else because you pay them so you have to over-use them abi undecided Huh!!!

God bless my kids nanny. I have known her for four years. A widow in her early 50s who is struggling to keep busy. I pay her 'peanuts' but the care she gives my kids is mind calming. She resumes every Monday morning 6:30am and leaves on Fridays when I get back from work, washes me and the kids clothes and takes my elder child to school while she looks after the younger who is still 1yr +. I do the cooking and keep in the freezer while she prepares eba or rice for dinner whenever I get late from work. Asides from salary I try to appriciate her with tins I know she nids eg foodstuffs, gifts or impromptu t- fare or credit Mony.

Getting a good nanny is luck and God's grace. Op should try to always cook her meals and keep in the freezer.she shuldnt be left to do everything and still take care of tins. Don't forget she may not be able to go Tru much stress and also taking advantage of you and hubby.

It's like employing a 50 years old gateman and later on he is not doing his job. The best thing is to let him go and get someone else. Remember he pleaded for the job. That's the logic.

I'm sorry ma'am if I came across as being judgemental, far from it.

Apologies okay..

NB

Just saw one of your threads and now understand why you are taking it easy and cautious with the preggo.

Quite understandable though, but I still maintain you could be fixing hubby's meal.

Honestly, I really don't see the difference btn a 50 year-old nurse and a nanny.

The OP doesn't even have kids yet and she helps with the chores so the 50 year olds workload is reduced. The OP said she isn't even pushy

A nurse is sometimes on her feet all day too, sometimes even lifting patients, chasing after crazy patients, prepping dead patients, preparing IVs.

What's the difference ? Especially the nurses managing very old patients who are almost like kids themselves.

Kanwulia I assume you are over 40, you mean you can't do domestic chores in Nigeria seeing as you are a nurse? Both are active jobs.

Op, I had gone through your previous thread before making my first comment on your thread reason why I didn't call you lazy or joined those blasting you.

As a matter of fact, only I offered to help by suggesting someone younger (in her 20s), if you live in Lagos and around Lekki/Ajah axis. She still gets the job done but closes daily and doesn't live with you. The least you could do was offer a simple reply.

"Oh sorry, I won't be needing her", or "I'm not in Lagos" etc, but you're focused on people giving you knocks rather than who wants to help.

A nurse does NOT do domestic work(even when taking care of children in NEONATOLOGY or PEDIATRICS)and works only in home health or clinical settings. NURSES WORK SPECIFIC HOURS, DAYS PER WEEK FOR WITH A CLEAR-CUT JOB DESCRIPTIONS . . . AND WITH AN AGREED SALARY SCALE AS STATED BY A SIGNED CONTRACT.

From what I know, retirement age in Nigeria remains 65, for women it's 60 so your nanny still has about 10 years or more to work. One can still see older women abroad working so I don't see the big deal in a 50 year old nanny. Go to farms in villages, you will see women in their 70s and 80s, weeding, planting, fetching water, so please discard the notion that 50 should be retired.

Now, she seems lazy to me though, if all you've said is true. She should at least be a better cook than she is. Maybe she's far older than her age, cause I don't understand why she can't even do simple house chores. I suggest you wait and check her baby minding skills before you send her away, she might be good at that and will save you a lot of stress, also oga will be turned off so you don't need to worry about thar , which I think is a plus.

Alright, no problem. Wish you all the best. But that woman needs to go, she's obviously a pain in the ass, something you were trying to avoid in the first place.

Young man, cool down. You get it all wrong. Read backward a bit. Nigerian homes? Speak for yourself. I don't breed rats, cockroaches , bed bugs. Do u breed house fly, cockroaches, rodents etc? For clarity, she's not complaining of too much stress rather over familiarity is bringing attitude. I was doing all that (chores) and still working and was always there for oga ' s pleasure. In fact , for my conscience I treat her well because she's someone mother. As u can see, she sees herself beyond a family member. The way she has spoken to me on three occasions shows she is too relaxed and has forgotten she's a nanny or she sees herself as my mother /mother inlaw. I see why people set boundaries immediately a new guest/worker is introduced to a house. Thank you

Please, bring your “nanny” to NL and let her write for herself!
Thanks.
You are not in diapers. . . . The term “nanny” does not apply.

Do people still sweep with manual brooms? Am I a baby that she washes my clothes everyday? Is she baby sitting babies? What I am saying is that she doesn't have much to be done. Because I see her as a mother that has nursed 5 kids, I believed /assumed we won't be having a long discussion over some issues.

Joyfulgal dont listen to anybody telling you that you dont need a help/nanny.
Pregnancy treats us differently. If their mothers nursed 20 kids without help, while farming at the same time, e no concern you
If you need to have help, and can afford one, please go ahead
I employed my help when I was 6 months pregnant. People were criticizing me and asking me to wait till I have two kids but I no listen to any of them . When they saw how well myself and my help were living, they came to ask for the connection , they wanted help too.
I have one son and I have a help, once I get pregnant again, I go employ the second to pamper me and run all my pregnancy errands grin
Call me lazy o, I no care. None of them would be around to massage you when your back is aching from bending down.
Abeg get help so that when baby comes, you will have time to bond. Not breastfeeding and pounding yam at the same life.
You make money to have comfort, you wont have money and still be living suffer life because you want people to call you hardworking Hebrew woman."yimu"
Infact make sure you employ a help that can cook very well, or get a cook if you can afford it. Pregnancy is enough stress abeg. You need all the help you can get. As long as no one is giving you money, then you owe no one any explanations.

50 years old is not too old to be a nanny or housekeeper. Some people actually learn how to be a nanny in a school, and definitely will not retire age 50.
I wonder who retires at age 50 despite tired bones. It's a job, and provided she has not won bet Naija/ the lottery she will just have to get on with it like the rest of the world get on with their miserable jobs.
Let her know your expectations and her job description, and if she's not performing well, let her go and replace her hoping for someone more serious who's ready to work and not expecting some free money.

The women in the West live in somewhat easier climes......

They have electricity all the time and can bulk shop food items as well as bulk cook for weeks if they do desire.

Availability of electricity all the time mean they have access to labor saving device as may be needed. They can wash and iron when they please . They don't have to bulk iron or wash because "nepa supply is availabile now or the gen is turned on".

Women in the West can work fewer hours and still earn decent income.

Women in the West can plan their schedules and won't be hindered by long hours in traffic. Imagine a mum in Lagos who leaves ikoyi for gbagada at 5 and traffic spans for the next four hours because there is an accident on the bridge. It'll be tougher on her if she had toddlers and no maid for eg

My point is the climes are different and there's no basis for comparison

Why do you bother explaining all these? leave them let them keep comparing apples to oranges
A man abroad comes home and fixes himself a plate, can their nigerian counterparts do that?
They will wait for her to come back from work and start making ofada rice for them, whole they relax with a bottle beer in front of the tv
The chores and split between a man and woman abroad, the wife does laundry while the husband babysits
Here in Nigeria, the wife would back the baby while fetching water or washing.
A Nigerian man feels he should be praised for caring for his baby or washing dishes. After all na man him be.
Being in a woman in Nigeria is hard enough, we are already dealing with enough sh*t in our offices and businesses, so we intend to contract out as much stress as we can.
The help needs the money and accommodation, I need his/her domestic help. Everybody is happy.
Some women are superwomen, handling home, husband and work alone,. I applaud them, their reward is in heaven.

Rubbish post. Women in the west hardly have maids, ask how they do it. You lot are so entitled undecided

The main reason most women in the West don't have maids is because they can't conveinently afford it.
It's cheaper for most to stay home and look after their children than to get child care, as its very expensive.
However, families that both husband and wife have very well paying jobs will definitely get maids, nannies, and au pairs. Even regular families who don't earn so much, but can still have some change left after paying their maids get one. If you work and earn 100k, and pay 30k to a maid, you still have 70K to foot some other important expenses instead of staying home to look after the kids/house.
The OP sounds as though she can afford a help, so why not? Some graduates don't even earn as much as she pays her help.
She feels she needs help at this time of her life, and nobody is in her shoes to tell us she is lazy or not. She also has her own job, so what is the issue in getting well paid help?

Ladies of nowadays really need to stop digesting everything they learn from their mothers. It is not a must to have a maid. Most of the time, these women can't even afford the services of the maid, yet prefer to leave the house in order to be classified as working class-working woman. They come back home after 30 days of hustle with less than 100k salary.

Maid stays home, cook, relax, watch Africa Magic and at the end of the month, gets paid between 30-40k with other tips. ...because she works less, sometimes oga can even decide to switch after wifey must have given him a line up of complaints about body ache.

I really don't understand why women are so obsessed with maids.

Anything that gives a Nigerian woman comfort is a thorn to the men's flesh
O! so our mothers actually used maids? I thought they went to the farm with pregnancy and went back to tilling the soil right after birth? Oh! Pardon me, its our grandmothers.
If a woman earns 100k and pays her help 30k, e no concern anybody. Its her money. Afterall the man brings as well abi?
How is it anyone's business hoe she spends her money?
And for the man switching to maids, well, thats not shocking, its what you people have reduced yourselves to.
I don't know why men are obsessed with making their wives suffer undecided undecided

I knew nursing in the US was slightly different to the US but I thought there will be some similarities.

So who cleans up after babies in the special care baby unit? Who cleans up after adults who can't feed and dress themselves? What about those can't walk?
