You should understand that Africans generally are clannish in nature hence, we all identify by our ethnic groups/clans.

Almost all African nations today, were created by British, French, German, Spanish and Portuguese imperialists for easy administration. Different people were lumped together. For instance, in Nigeria, the average Igbo has nothing in common with the average Hausa, only that we share the same nation.

Before the advent of the British colonialists in Nigeria, Igbos practiced democracy where the age grades, the oldest son of every family(Okpara), the women leaders(Umu ada) all had an important role to play in administration. While, in the West and North - oligarchy reigned supreme, not like it's a bad idea though. In spite of all these differences, Lord Lugard went ahead to amalgamate Nigeria. He never thought it wise to, create separate nations for the Igbos, Hausas and Yorubas.

If the status quo remain like this, not only Nigeria but, the entire Africa would never achieve her full potentials. For instance in Nigeria, tribal loyalty is superior than national loyalty.
