There's no doubt that Sissoko was bad, but you saying that's poor defending by VVD is nearly comical. I mean, what other options are there for him? There was a small chance of the attacker being forced to pull the trigger and missing, which, albeit small, represented the best chance of preventing a goal. If he'd have rushed Sissoko, who laid the pass on to Son to score you'd have been berating him for being careless. If Alisson had saved Son's shot, you'd have been quick to point out how the goalkeeper is bailing out the defender of the universe.

That's what makes his action better than simply blocking a passing lane. Over the 5 seconds, he kept readjusting his body back and forth to keep the passing lane closed. Most defenders can block a passing lane once but to do it repeatedly by adjusting your body position and running trajectory repetitively requires a thinking defender.

It's not every mumu that run in straight lines like Boateng. Boateng does not have the intelligence to keep concentration and awareness of both players positions for that length of time.
