My AFCON strongest eleven. In the absence of Djene, Colley and Bailly, I had to pick Benatia to partner Kalidou in the CB, due to o his experience and pedigree. My front three did creditably well this past season hence, Zaha and Mahrez couldn't make the cut, though, I had to play Mane centrally. In the midfield, Partey and Ndidi were top notch, then, the icing in the cake comes in the form of Ziyech.

Ighalo could be unfit but he has adequate cover until he gains match fitness. Onuachu and Osimhen can score goals.

Right now, Kelechi needs the holiday. Maybe it will help him rededicate himself.

Aurier? I'm sure there will be a better full back, he had an injury ravaged season plus his form was neither here nor there

The Super Eagles are planning to go all out as they target their fourth continental crown in Egypt
Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr revealed that his side are aiming to score more goals and will play offensive football at the Africa Cup of Nations finals.
The three-time African champions have included nine forwards in their 23-man squad list for the biennial showpiece.
Changchun Yatai's Odion Ighalo leads the frontline with Ahmed Musa, Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon, Henry Onyekuru, Alex Iwobi, Samuel Kalu, Paul Onuachu and Victor Osimhen all included.
Despite settling for a goalless draw in their build-up game against Zimbabwe last Saturday, Rohr sees the available options upfront as an opportunity for the team to switch tactics during play and also give chance for fresh legs.
"We have a lot of strikers which means we want to score more goals and play offensive football, we also have good defenders," Rohr told Goal .
"Some of our strikers could play in the midfield or in the plan 3-5-2 on the side, so it is good to have the opportunity to change in our offensive methods.
"We have quickness and ability to change in the offensive department, We can also give them the chance to rest."
Leicester City star Kelechi Iheanacho was a notable exclusion from the team that travelled to Egypt for the tournament.
The German tactician faulted the 22-year-old's goal drought and lack of playing time at the King Power Stadium as reasons for his exclusion.
"It is what happened in his club, he did not play at Leicester City, only few minutes and since September he scored one goal," Rohr continued.
"He has something missing, a little bit in confidence and also professionalism, he is a young player and can come back again but also we have better options.
"The choice was not easy but we have objectives we do not choose the names we choose the best one."
After their final friendly match against Senegal at Ismailia Stadium on Sunday, the Super Eagles will depart for Alexandria, where they will play all their Group B games.
Nigeria will play Burundi on June 22 followed by fixtures against Guinea and Madagascar, on June 26 and June 30 respectively.

He came back and did well to fill the gap created by Trippier's injury. He had a good CL run. I would have chosen Noussair Mazraoui in his stead, but, both were there for their respective clubs when Aurier's Spurs ousted Ajax.

Rohr has started again with his young team excuses.grin Remember he used same excuses in Russia. He even went as far as referring to the world cup as a learning curve for his young team. Like hell, who goes to tourneys to learn? This guy is a coward and always looking for excuses. The bulk of your team have been together for a long while and 90percent of ur team already have world cup experience(s), yet u still here shouting "young team"? angry

''I think we have a young team without any stars. There are not many great players like Nigeria had in the 80s or 90s but our young team will be able to come out of the group and to try to go far,'' Rohr told DW Kick off.

I don't even want ighalo to be fit for any of the afcon matches so that Oshimen can be our top 9...who wants a repetition of the match against Argentina?

oshimen is more clinical and a better finisher than the old player from China who can miss a seater..anytime.

abeg...may una relax joor this is a blessing in disguise.
Oshimen should be our 9

grin

Well-done Sir........ *In Falz Voice*

I do not wish him (Osimhen) failure, if he's called upon to lead the Line - but I hope you won't make sharp, swift 180° turn ........ if things go south for him.

I hope you gonna firmly stand by him, keep believing in him as you are doing now?! I hope you gonna see it as a moment of rough patch for him, and won't join to criticize and condemn as you are already doing to Onuachu.

I remember how elated you were, when Onuachu banged his debut "rocket" goal for the Eagles. I remember also your Reaction recently to his poor performance against Zimbabwe.

Fingers crossed, Arms folded ...... Watching in 4D!

It's a strategy. If he loses in the group stage, he can point to the fact that it's a team he's building for the future.

Someone appointed in August 2016 is still looking for excuses. Smh.

Pre -AFCON Friendly: Super Eagles To Adopt 3-5-2 Formation Vs Senegal

Nigeria’s Super Eagles will adopt a 3-5-2 formation in Sunday’s pre- 2019 Africa Cup of Nations friendly encounter against the Terangha Lions of Senegal at the Ismaila, Stadium, Completesports.com reports.

The three-time time champions played a 4-4-2 formation in last Saturday’s friendly clash against the Warriors of Zimbabwe at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba which ended in a goalless draw.

Head coach of the side, Completesports.com learnt is however prepared to change his formation against the Senegalese who are one of the favourites to win the competition.

The Super Eagles lined-up in the same formation in their penultimate AFCON 2019 qualifying game against the Bafana Bafana of South in Johannesburg which ended in a 1-1 draw.

The trio of Leon Balogun, William Troost-Ekong and Kenneth Omeruo are expected to occupy the three centre-back positions in the formation, while Jamilu Collins will feature in the left wing-back position.

It however remain to be seen who will play at right wing-back position amongst the trio of Samuel Kalu, Ola Aina and Shehu Abdullahi.

Nigeria are in Group B of the showpiece and they will begin their campaign for a fourth Afcon title against Burundi at the Alexandria Stadium on June 22.

Garba Lawal: Senegal will be shooting practice for Super Eagles Afcon ambition

The ex-international has thumbed up the decision to face the Teranga Lions and called it a crucial fixture for 2019 Afcon preparation

Former Super Eagles player Garba Lawal has applauded the decision to face Senegal in a friendly game before their Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) opener against Burundi on June 22.

Lawal stated that the game with the Teranga Lions will afford the goal-shy Eagles strikers to test their scoring prowess again after their inability to score against the Warriors of Zimbabwe.

“The game against Senegal should be applauded because it will be used by the coach to look at the players at his disposal and to see how he will get his first 11 players that will start against Burundi,” Lawal told Goal.

“We expect a tough game against the Senegalese because they are also going to the Africa Cup of Nations. It is going to be a massive game. The fact that we didn't score against Zimbabwe is another reason we should play against Senegal to see another opportunity to score goals before the start of the Afcon.

“We are still preparing for the Nations Cup and the friendly tie with Senegal is very important. During my time is past tense. We are talking about the present tense and there are not the same games."

The ex-midfielder affirmed that he is among the Nigerians rooting for the Eagles to go all the way in Egypt.

“We still have hope on the Eagles to deliver in Egypt. They have no excuse,” he continued.

“I want the Eagles to win the Africa Cup of Nations even though it will be difficult. We are going to expect a tough game [against Senegal].

"They [Senegal] have their players all over Europe who play regularly for their clubs. It is not going to be easy against them.”

The Eagles will slug it out with Burundi, Guinea and Madagascar in Group B at the Afcon in Egypt which starts on June 21.

Some of u guys here never cease to amaze
wen some coaches brag abt their teams nd how they will go all d way to win games nd trophies... Ud come here nd start saying they only know how to brag or wag their mouths..
Rohr is talking small nd removing d pressure off d players nd allowing dem play their football free of d burden of expectation nd u ppl are complaining...
Lemme ask those smart enof to think... Has rohr ever played defensively or played a formation dat looks like we want to sit back nd take a beating even tho he always says we arent favorite??

If u believe dat just because d coach says we arent favorites it will make d players want d trophy any less den ur just not thinking straight

Nd if u believe he will not lose his job if he performs poorly with d team just becos he is calming down expectations den ur just a learner (No offense?)

So ppl should just chill
Abeg gustav gimme dat ur L picture

Why talk trash about a player you have not been following his progress? Maja have been injured and before that played a couple of matches and even have a goal to his name. He had a serious injury when he was getting into the team which ruled him out of the season.
