Population of what...kids, elderly or working active adults.Africa has 1B people but majority are kids.Those kids are in school and a huge burden to their families & gov because humans unlike other animals develop very slowly.The price we pay for walking upright and having huge brain.China have majority adults and few kids.Those are assets.One China family has 2 parents, 2 grandparents and 1 kid.One Nigeria family has 10 kids and two adults.Families start developing when they have excess money to save and invest because they have less kids or old sickly people.The country is aggregate of those families.

A country develop only when it's hit 2 kids per family.China went 1Kid hence their incredible story.Those are basics before we get to macro economics policies.if every Nigerian family had 2kids max...it would like Botswana or South Africa.Country develop at micro level...at individual family level.Otherwise if it didn't oil producing countries like Nigeria or Gabon would be rich.

You actually missed the whole ball game. while the speed of population growth remains unchanged, its sources are different. Country such as India population growth was driven by increasing numbers of children and that was the case of Africa.in Europe and some few country in Asia like China, , it is driven by longer life expectance and the base effect of the previous population boom. You can see how China has pragmatically managed its population growth favouring her economy.
