Right. Captain Marvel at the top of her game, and on top of all her feminist abilities, Thanos still overpowered her relatively easily... a fit Thor will suffer much worse. grin

Meal Ticket is very unapologetically bleak. The theme is morally grey, and borders on nihilism.

It's easy to call the impresario evil, but put yourself in his shoes for a moment. What if you are barely getting by, and you suddenly find yourself with 3 mouths to feed in a very harsh winter. One of your ward is no longer earning his worth, and you just bought another ward. Are you going to keep the ward that is no longer earning his keep, or make it easier on yourself and your new ward and get rid of the excess baggage lest he drags y'all to poverty? He simply made an economical decision. It gets even bleaker when you consider the fact that he killed a human being for the sake of a chicken, but that's not all, it gets worse... he killed his meal ticket for nothing - The chicken act won't work at all, for he bought a normal chicken, not the secret for making the chicken choose the right number. Bottom line, he was scammed. It's a brutal tale that explores the emptiness of the economic choices life can force us to make, often at the expense of our humanity. It's my favorite chapter.
The thought did flash through my mind- "Did the old owner of this counting chicken sell him the trade secret, or did he just sell him a mere hungry chicken?" The Narrator seemed doomed from the very outset because the Impresario did not have any kind of connection with the boy, except to feed him and lug him around like an ATM. Did you notice how not a single word passed between them? The boy truly was just a mere meal ticket to him, nothing more, nothing less, which is why he didn't hesitate when it was time to do the dirty. I think that story is for selfishness. Suck a person dry and throw him away once he has outlived his usefulness.

My third favorite is The Gal Who Got Rattled. I didn't see that end coming at all. It's like an episode of Black Mirror.
I was smiling at the sweetness of the girl's Victorian gentility and the budding romance between her and that dude. The ending wiped the smile of my face. I too didn't see that ending and it rattled me.

But the one that made me ponder a bit is the last chapter. I don't know if the trapper, the lady and the Frenchman were dead, and the Englishman and Irishman, reapers. Still musing about it. Thoughts?
It's a bit confusing. It could be that they are all dead, which explains why the Coachman never stops. It also explains why the title of the chapter is 'Mortal Remains'.

Yes, that's it. The reapers look at the face of the ones dying and see them struggling with death and 'trying to make sense of it's.

It, however doesn't explain the presence of a corpse on top of the coach.

However I am inclined to believe that they are all dead. They just don't know it.

So much must have gone into recreating this live aid scene in Bohemia Rhapsody. So much perfection. Rami Malek really gave his best.

Selfishness? In that case, the same could be said of the thespian orator. He used the impresario just as much as the impresario used him. He could have chose not to recite his poems anymore, and end the symbiotic relationship in his own terms, but he didn't. Why? Survival. He needed a roof over his head, and to stay alive, if only for those little moments he can wow the crowd with his oratory skills and bath in the warmth of their applause. Survival is also the reason the impresario kept him fed, and clothed, kept him warm at night, and take care of his extremities. They didn't need to speak because both understood the roles they play in their bleak alliance. They were business partners, not friends. They were both selfish in their survival.

Bottom line, it all comes down to what I said earlier.

I have a different interpretation.

The corpse represents a soul that has already been judged and is on their way to heaven/hell. The Englishman represents Heaven or God, whilst the Irishman represents hell or lucifer. When the Englishman told the Irishman the corpse will be staying with the Irishman for the night, it's an allegorical way of condemning the soul to hell.

The Old lady, Frenchman and Trapper are dead but haven't been judged yet, thus their uncertainties. The hotel is where they will be judged. The horseman represents a soul reaper aka death.
