Its long overdue. I remembered 2004 as NYSC member at Government secondary school Yusufari , Yobe State, i had to learn Hausa in order to teach my students . Now that its official, its good for Education in that region that has lagged behind others. kudos Yobe State.

If you've lived or served in the north you'll agree with me that this is a very bad move

The truth is that it’s good and bad at the same time..

Good because it will enhance learning and understanding..

Bad because it will be difficult for such students to compete internationally when he/she only understands hausa..

Seems waec question will be set in hausa too..

Tell me how bad China is communicating badly internationally?

So after learning in Hausa.... they will remain in the north forever or what? Teach children as many languages as you can , their brain accumulates faster @ that stage. .....since they are being prepared for the outside world
How are the Chinese surviving in Nigeria? 90% of them don't understand English, and they dominate our construction industry

No doubt ur correct but the problem is that yobe is not Lagos or some part of Nigeria where English or pidgin is used at all. So what do you think will happen to such students when they leave north??

It is not a good initiative as local languages are restricted to a particular region. Secondly graduate from schools can't compete favourably with their counterparts globally. Thirdly Nigeria is a multi ethnic state with English as the main lingua franca spoken in business clime. The ministry of education should have critically examined this development before making sure decision.

Hausa is coming in to enable the pupils understand the concept, but English will be there as second language.
China,Russia etc teach their kids in native language.

I understand the idea behind it but it's a wrong action

They are supposed to enforce teaching of English language more strongly and invest in more English resources to bring them up to speed with the rest of the country, not bring in measures that will drag them even further backward

You shouldn't lower the standard just to pander to lazy schools who don't want to move forward with everybody else

We learned in English, does it mean we don't like our own native languages? Why do they insist on doing their own thing

They are undermining national unity

I'm happy that your offspring will speak and be taught in Hausa exclusively, that way my own kids won't have to communicate with them. It's good

It's the schools fault for encouraging illiteracy and not yours. By the time you got to the school, the kids should have been able to understand English just like you could understand English when you went to school

Using native languages as the language of instruction is totally wrong

Wrong, wrong and double wrong

This is total Rubbish and I am very much disappointed to see my fellow countrymen celebrate this insanity... Nigeria is a multi ethnic country for crying out loud...This people in the North don't even bother to learn English and they wud even tell you to go and learn Hausa before you interact with them even a graduate...I wonder how they pass English at O'level, well I learnt they do there final year project defence in Hausa language...what sort of fuckery is this...I work in a hospital here and I find it difficult doing test without an interpreter most times...
and some people are up there celebrating this fuckery... For this unnecessary marriage we call Nigeria to work every damn state shud speak and teach with English Only, being our official language...Else the country shud divide abeg

Only something as vapid and dry as the african brain trains it's citizens for the purpose of 'compete internationally'. What % of those students are living 'internationally'. This is someone who has never seen a non-Nigerian in their adult life saying this.

Good top 20 economies world wide and see if they have this idiotic mentality that only poverty stricken countries have.

When time to compete in foreign examination comes you will know grin IELTS and TOEFL will be given in Hausa too grin this is the reason Chibok girls could not speak a word of English but they were writing WAEC

At the end of the day, the financial rewards of education is what dictates what should be acquired and not just emotions.

There's going to be a glass ceiling for those taught in Hausa. However, I think the training is just for a few years and not permanent.

As of today the cut off marks for northerners across all levels of education is much lower than for Southerners, meaning the quality of education in the South is much better, you're setting yourselves up for further failure.

Upon their backwardness?
upon ur inferiority complex??....Chinese,indians and Arabs teach in their local dialet first b4 English are they backward?.even Kenya and east Africans are doing the same

In case u don't know, the northern Europeans or Scandinavians and Dutch all speak English better than asians and Africans but they chose to silent their English capabilities..Ireland have realised the importance of their dialet, Irish, they have started teaching their kids Irish and most of their information are written in Irish in conjunction with English..french Canadians did the same too

Can I get 3applause for this directive.

This is long over due, there should be a mix of native language and lingua franca in teaching.

Some people who are perceived as unintelligent are only like that cos they can't comprehend what is taught in English.

Use mother tongue to explain same thing to them and you will marvel at their assimilation.

I remember a professor at Lasu engineering used to teach us circuit diagram in yoruba, it was all fun but in exam hall, you will hear the yoruba examples resonating over the margins you read all night
They should also stop sending corp members to teach in such area. Imagine teaching in a school were the student don't understand english and you dont understand hausa. Una go just dey look each other for class. Am talking of ss2 ss3 student, any small thing ba turanshi. Talking from experience.

this is what most east Africa country are doing even though they are colonized by British, all learning materials are written in swalil

If we had a unifying language like them then it would be different

We don't all speak hausa so this development is totally wrong

This is just another way to assert Northern hegemony upon all the rubbish we have been through already

There's nothing like inferiority complex, education in the north is pure rubbish, how can ss2 and ss3 student not know how to speak English, dey dont know how to read basic maths they dont know yet they pass waec and jamb. This policy would have being better in the south, not north were dey are struggling to speak English already.
