This is very good. Hausa language is the 11th most spoken language in the World. Why do we have to adopt foreign yeye English. Developed Industrialised Nations of G7 + China +Russia + India use their own languages

The truth is that it’s good and bad at the same time..

Good because it will enhance learning and understanding..

Bad because it will be difficult for such students to compete internationally when he/she only understands hausa..

Seems waec question will be set in hausa too..
Go and check out many European nations (Germany, France, Sweden etc). Children are taught in their own languages throughout their elementary schools.

The last time I checked Nigerians can't compete with those nations in terms of science and technology.

They should also stop sending corp members to teach in such area. Imagine teaching in a school were the student don't understand english and you dont understand hausa. Una go just dey look each other for class. Am talking of ss2 ss3 student, any small thing ba turanshi. Talking from experience.

I can imagine. How did you manage to teach them/overcome this obstacle?

As in, they don't understand 'come here' in English?

This is the only way to accelerate education in rural areas. English should be learned as means of communication and not for learning. Literacy ought to be in the local language and all other languages should be learned just for the purpose of communication. This is a laudable development and it is long overdue! I wonder what our education policy makers have been thinking all these years!

That's the way they do it in all the countries we wish to be like- China, Korea, Japan, Russia, etc. When we free ourselves completely, English won't even be a subject in African schools.

how many Arabs, indians,Chinese, french,Latinos, Italians,Germans can speak English?...

A good number of Indians, Italians, Germans, French etc all speak very good English but they silent their skills. They put their language first and only speak English when very necessary. This they do as a way of promoting their language.

Maybe we should implement that in the South here and expose students to more English during Secondary school.

Which would be a complete disaster! So what language are they going to use to teach in Kogi or Delta state??

Some kids in underprivileged schools can't even write a full English sentence and can only speak pidgin. Now you want to make it even worse

That is totally wrong in a federation with a national language

They are supposed to teach Hausa as a language subject and leave English as the language of instruction

If they care so much about Hausa language they should make it a compulsory class and ensure that all the children pass it

Why do we always do things upside down in this country
do u know the psychological effect of not teaching kids with their mother tongue??

Lol! The same psychological effects that somehow skipped all the Nigerian kids living in the other 35 states and countries all over the world but somehow just fell on top of kids in Yobe.

What are the psychological effects, please go ahead and tell me

THE FACT REMAINS, THOSE DEVELOPED COUNTRIES COMPETING WITH ONE ANOTHER TODAY ARE USING THEIR LOCAL LANGUAGE TO IMPART KNOWLEDGE. TO JOIN THEM WE MUST DO THE SAME..

so, who won the debate? The proponents or the opponents? You are both right and wrong, so no clear winner has emerged yet. plz try again later. science should be taught in Hausa but other subjects should be taught in English. that is the preferred view!

China has Mandarin, a standardized Chinese that they all use. It's not necessarily everyone's dialect.
Nigeria has like a billion tongues

That doesn't make sense in a country of 250 different languages. The way it was done before is OK. Make learning of one local language compulsory till end of secondary school.Nigeria school curriculum should be uniform all through the country
there is nothing like uniform curriculum... Nigeria is a federal state... India has over 20 official languages so

Is North a different country from Nigeria? What is the official language of Nigeria?
You better allow Nigeria to divide before starting that nonsense. Nobody will stop you guys from making Hausa language the official language of Arewa Nation.

Tomorrow, you'll want Southern Youth Corps members to be posted to teach in the North. How are they supposed to communicate with their students and pass knowledge?

That they cannot compete internationally because they speak hausa is not tenable. It is the same colonial thinking that all advancement and civilisation is by English speaking people. Tell that to the French, Germans, Portuguese, Dutch, Spanish, Danes, Russians, Japanese or Chinese who teach their pupils and students in their native tongue. Even Americans and Indians have their own version of English, waiting for the day Nigeria will make pidgin English an official language.

Learning English is a big deal in China they will pay you to teach them, that's how some people are surviving there whereas an average aboki can't construct a simple sentence.

No doubt ur correct but the problem is that yobe is not Lagos or some part of Nigeria where English or pidgin is used at all. So what do you think will happen to such students when they leave north??

Of course, they'll still study English but just like every other subject in school. English should just be a subject in school and not our life!.
Re: Yobe Adopts Hausa As Language Of Instruction In Schools by Aboki99(m): 8:28pm On Oct 22, 2019
Who told you the Chinese students came to UK knowing how to construct sentences in English? Anyway you won't understand what iam talking about unless you come here to the UK and interact with students from China

The North can't even compete with the South locally no need going international. We had to device quota system and low cut off marks for them here in Nigeria not even internationally. Southern Teachers write international exam for them to pass always everybody knows this.

Can the North compete with the South locally? you're going too far when you mention international, somebody is even mentioning China, Russia, India, comparing them to North grin

Who says they can't leave north and go NORTH? The world has become global, we need to adjust and stop thinking within East & south.
North alone is WIDE beyond Nigeria

It's the schools fault for encouraging illiteracy and not yours. By the time you got to the school, the kids should have been able to understand English just like you could understand English when you went to school

Using native languages as the language of instruction is totally wrong

Wrong, wrong and double wrong
English is not the only language of Literacy, my dear. The Chinese, the Japs, and Russians etc don't use English at school and its doesn't make them less literate. Am I right?

I understand the idea behind it but it's a wrong action

They are supposed to enforce teaching of English language more strongly and invest in more English resources to bring them up to speed with the rest of the country, not bring in measures that will drag them even further backward

You shouldn't lower the standard just to pander to lazy schools who don't want to move forward with everybody else

We learned in English, does it mean we don't like our own native languages? Why do they insist on doing their own thing

They are undermining national unity

this is the sensible comment I've been waiting for,

Hausa can be used to explain simplify difficult terms but English should be the number one so as to help them wherever they go. They won't write even neco or go to UNN to study medicine in Hausa. English is a must!
We learnt it and did not die.
If we can, they can too
