Throwback: Read again. None of Wole Soyinkas works comes anywhere close to any of Chinua Achebe's works. |

Fadomero:No wonder you were insulting the isi agu on those air hostesses. Not because it is strange, but because you are a bigot. Even Soyinka would gun you down.for that statement. |

Achebe was the author of the first African novel to be taken seriously by anglophone critics and to be influential outside Africa; and thus to demonstrate to his contemporaries that the thing could be done. That's no mean achievement in itself, and worth any number of prizes.

Hotfreezer: You are a fucking tribal bigot first of all Achebe was never sleeping with college girls he was a diplomat seeking for international assistance during the biafran war, Achebes books are internationally acclaimed go and google it Achebe is a distinguished writer who seemed to tell the world the African story in the African way he is a literary giant who don't need scumbags like you to tell his story |

PrecisionFx: Read again. It is not a popularity of works contest, else your argument over who should have won should have nothing to do with the 1986 edition of the award, rather you should have equally been contesting why others before Soyinka won the Prize when the Igbo genius merited it before everyone else that had the misfortune of sharing the world stage with Achebe. Soyinka was awarded the 1986 Nobel Prize for his Plays and Poetry, 2 genres of Literature that do not know the existence of Achebe. Read again. Go and drag the 1991 Nobel Prize for Literature with Nadine Gordimer, who was the first African who was awarded the prize for her works in Prose, yet Achebe's works in Prose stand taller than hers. In summary, since you like dragging things, go drag it with your mate. |

munchi: Really? Animal is still being read in high school.in Nigeria. Even Things Fall Apart is one of books recommended for students in the US. I know we used it back in the days but Animal Farm was top of the list. 1 Like |

Hotfreezer: Chinua Achebe sleeping with college girls in America during the Nigerian civil war?? ''Chinua is a storyteller who excelled in writing beer parlour stories." One of Chinua Achebes beer parlour stories sold over 10 million copies worldwide (much more than anything Soyinka wrote). That same work was translated in 50 different languages worldwide, a feat Soyinka cannot even dream of inside his dreams . If anyone says Chinua Achebe was denied a nobel prize for literature because he supported biafra, then the person is speaking from a position of gross ignorance....Rather Chinua Achebe was denied a nobel peace prize for literature because he always strongly wrote against western influence in Africa, The West owns n decides whom they give a nobel prize to, just like every other award they give... |
