The Lagos Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, has confirmed four new cases of the COVID-19 pandemic in Lagos,

With this, there are now a total of 12 cases in the country.

The Health Commissioner confirmed the new cases at a news briefing on Thursday.

This comes barely one day after the Federal Ministry of Health confirmed five new cases of Coronavirus (COVID-19).

The Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, confirming the news at a press briefing on Wednesday in Abuja, explained that out of the five new cases, three arrived from the United States while two came from the United Kingdom.

“We are still collating information on the travellers; two out of the three from the US are Nigerian, a mother and a 6-week old baby which makes it the youngest COVID-19 patient we have.

“The third is an American national, who crossed the land border to become the first COVID-19 case not arriving by air. The two cases from the UK are Nigerians”.

The Minister noted that a detailed travel history of each person is being compiled and contacts currently being traced, to identify persons who have recently been in contact with anyone.

The Lagos State Ministry of Health said four new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in the case.

This brings to 12 the total number of coronavirus cases in Nigeria, although one of the victims has fully recovered.

The Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, addressed journalists on the new cases on Thursday at the state secretariat.

He said 19 tests were performed on suspected cases and contacts of the five cases announced on Wednesday, out of which four turned positive.

The first positive test is that of a Nigerian female who returned from France via a Turkish airline (TK 1830) on March 14.

Another confirmed case is a Nigerian male in his 50s who had never travelled anywhere. He tested positive and had since been admitted.

Mr Abayomi said the third case is a Nigerian male who arrived in Nigeria on March 13, from Frankfurt, Germany on Luftansa flight LH 568.

“What we have is a combination of imported cases and local transmission,” Mr Abayomi said.

He added that the ministry is currently tracking over 1,300 people in relation to Covid-19.

The Lagos State Government has confirmed four new cases of Coronavirus (COVID-19), saying the total number of positive cases in the state now stands at 11. Prof. Akin Abayomi, the state Commissioner for Health, who made this known during the COVID-19 update on Thursday in Lagos, said the state government had immediately commenced contact tracing of 1,300 people.

According to him, one of the four new cases is a woman who had contact with the Nigerian woman who returned from UK and currently receiving treatment for testing positive. “The second new case is a female who returned from France on March 14 on a Turkish Airline TK 1830,” the commissioner said. He said that the third case is a Nigerian male in his 50s who had not travelled anywhere, but tested positive to the virus. Abayomi added that the fourth new case is a Nigerian male who arrived in Lagos from Frankfurt on Lufthansa Airline flight number LH568 on March 13.

He said that more tests were still ongoing with some suspected cases, while appealing to passengers on the two flights to self-isolate themselves and contact the government. The commissioner noted that the state government had commenced intensive contact tracing of over 1, 300 people to get information, monitor their health status, adding the number of contacts was increasing. “It is clear that we have combination of imported cases and local transmission. The Executive of Lagos State is meeting on the next stage on social distancing. “The best way to slow the rate is to halt movement of the virus from person to person,” Abayomi said.

The commissioner said the first index case (the Italian male) had tested negative to COVID-19, adding that he would soon be discharged. Abayomi urged the citizens to remain calm, practice constant handwashing and good respiratory hygiene. Daily Trust reports that the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) had confirmed five new cases of the coronavirus yesterday. With these new four cases, the total number of confirmed cases in Nigeria is now 12. Last Tuesday, a Nigerian woman, who returned from the United Kingdom on March 13th, was confirmed to be having the virus. The second case of the virus was one of the persons who had close contact with the first reported case- an Italian engineer. The Italian citizen, who works in Nigeria, returned from Milan, Italy to Lagos on the 25th of February.

For 2 weeks now, I have been making calls in all my post here on the need to check our entry point with a total restriction and compulsory quarantine of incoming travellers so that we just continue battling with the Italian index until the virus wave die down , I even created a topic for it but our deaf leaders won't care because they just wanted to create a new means of looting our money. Now, it is happening, wait and see the way this thing will mutiply within a short time. Thank God, most youths will survive it and I m sure most of this politicians won't survive it. God must punish them all

Let us be strong and follow the laid down instructions. We shall overcome it and if you don't have a forgiven spirit, look for a way to pour your convid19 infected bathing water on them or their properties.....

It's quite unfortunate the FG failed to shut out borders and airlines coming into the country on time.

9 in one day and a half. All social gatherings should be suspended RIGHT NOW. As everyone predicted, Lagos is the first major area of target. The numbers might get exponential in the nearest future, because Lagos is too crowded and congested. Stockpiling should be in everyone's to-do list, as there might be a general lockdown pretty soon.

It was expected. The travel ban will not even be enforced till tomorrow, so coronavirus still has 24hours to enter Nigeria. We should better go and stock up our houses with food, because by next week, prices of foodstuff will rise exponentially angry

Oh boy! Looks like things are getting messier real fast.

It's a no brainer. More cases are going to spring up. As we speak we may already have hundreds of unreported positive cases roaming within the populace.

Our only hope is our natural defense system and discipline in adhering to social distancing restrictions. Let's pray that infected persons continue to be asymptomatic.

Contagion rises once more.

This goes to prove that we are on our own in this world but religious fundies will keep praying and putting their hopes in imaginary beings until the virus wipes them off the face of the earth. The Spanish flu of the 1820s claimed over 40 million lives. Where was God? Sleeping I suppose.

Look at how a common virus is threatening the spread of the gospel and people want me to believe religion isn't man made. Churches and mosques are being closed all over the world and this doesn't seem to bother God who apparently cannot do without his children worshiping him

If churches and mosque can be shut down by men then it is safe to conclude they were invented by men. Nothing divine or magical about them. Let's hope this virus doesn't turn out worse than the Spanish flu but if it does, the same humans that closed their churches and mosques will go reopen them after the virus has decimated 1/3 of the human race to resume worship to gods that watched and did nothing. Dumb humans

I mean the church is where people run to when they need miracles why is it being closed now. Is this virus too powerful for them?
Now is the time for religious Gods to prove themselves but they won't; watch how they'd cower behind their followers they are failing and will fail to protect.

Now is the time for the true God; Yahweh, Allah, Zeus or whoever to unite the human race under one religion that is if they truly wanted to save the human race from eternal damnation. Don't come and preach to me the Jesus loves me hackneyed rhetoric when he couldn't prove himself for the whole world. I won't listen

Shame
