There are some paper loss that are as good as realised loss in terms of permanence sha.

Those that bought IPOs of Transcorp, Japaul and VeritasKapital Assurance 12 years ago can attest grin

Zenith and UBA are 6th and 8th respectively when it comes to dividend yield. Trancorp and Japaul are 80th and 93rd respectively.

Recovery is very likely. Even without capital appreciation at an average of 10% return he would have recovered his losses in 7 years.

Zenith dropped by 41% this year.
Therefore, 25m loss evaluates to 100÷41×25m =61m

61m was his initial investment, while he has 36m left in the market.

7 years at 10% average; 36m × 10 ÷ 100 × 7 = 25.2m

After 7 years he will be back where he started at 61m.

This is wrong, check out the date July 2019.

Based on last year's dividend zenith will give you a dividend yield of about 25% at the current price

Do nothing. You will recover within a year time.

On 18-03-2019 they paid 250 kobo per share (valued 21.9 naira). I think that was the last record on which the evaluation was based. They probably paid a second one. 20% would not change their position a lot since they averaged over 6 years. Maybe 4th or 5th instead of 6th position. The point I was making was that they maintained above 10% average over the last 6 years.

The problem you will have with this is that the date for this computation was done since 2019.

To get the correct dividend yield, you need the most recent traded price of each of those stocks and a lot of water has passed under the bridge since 2019 sir.

Rabbi, So you are not aware that all the top banks in Nigeria are highly exposed to oil and gas sector.
The implication of this is that the banking sector might be the first casualty of what we fear most(Recession )
First bank has not recovered from the NPL of 2012/14.
Already, Zenith and GT have been downgraded by Fitch.
No one can predict what will happen next. However, we must remain invested.

Check the quarterly investor call presentations of banks to give you a fair picture of their oil and gas exposures. Its on their respective Investor Relations pages.

From what i see in that picture, it appears to be average yield for a number of years.

We have different threshold. Unfortunately when people join a forum like this, they dont understand that our risk profile differs. So when you follow someone with different risk profile, when the risk materializes then response will be different. When people use SHORT TERM funds for LONG TERM INVESTMENT because someone told them of a 50% return in 2 weeks what do you think will happen?

Then you have people averaging down and the more they buy the lower the market goes! How patient can they be after they've spent rent and school fees money to buy shares expecting to make 50% in 6 months only to be at 25% loss!

Then you have those that don't fully understand the strategic reason behind some moves. You have people buying illiquid stock to get on the board. No plan to sell. Now you joined because it was gaining 10% everyday with the hope of selling! You suddenly discover that what you have is paper profit because no one is BUYING smiley

People need to develop a plan and follow the plan. Yes you can update your plan BUT don't do follow follow because of our risk profile, objective etc are DIFFERENT.

Know yourself and UNTO thyself be TRUE

Best time to start digging out history ............ Good morning House

It has started already sef. Lots of contracts that was bid to kickstart later in the year are being suspended till next year already by iocs. It's going to be another 2015 - 2018 for the oil servicing firms soon
RabbiDoracle:

Since when? grin grin

Hope you know this isn't the first oil price crash?

One happened between 2014 till 2016. That was when all the banks took serious impairments for years(till 2018 sef).

I believe they must have learnt their lessons and hedge their risk appropriately.

If you downgrade a country, the banks will have same downgrades as well. You can't have a bank do well when the country is downgraded.

The risk to Nigeria is oil price. Some of the casualties of the low oil price are starting to show up in the US shale industry. One oil and has firm declared bankruptcy last week. More to come in the US.

That is why Trump wants to broker peace between Russia and Saudi to limit the number of US Oil workers that will be unemployed.

The first casualty in Nigeria will be the oil service industry. They will lay lots of them off as IOCs start cost cutting, reduction in capital spending and streamlining of activities.

Nigerian banks wicked o. E be like say you never hear who dem do something before. grin grin

http://www.nse.com.ng/Issuers-section/listed-securities/company-details?symbol=MOBIL

Mobil/11 plc gave us an open cheque now we are shy to write enough money on it, Yet the goal most nse investors is to make too much money.

Mobil told us that we have from 3rd of March to 3rd of June to decide what the payoff that they will offer to us the minority investors at the AGM which will hold on 3rd of June will be.

The implication of that is that if we allow the price of Mobil to remain at 160.9 till June 3rd, the core investor may come up with a payoff of not more than 250. But if we can pump the price to like 600 or there about for instance, the core investor will like wise come up with a payoff that is above 600.

It is now left for us the minority investors and the market maker to decide what we want. The big payoff or the small payoff? grin grin grin

To every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction...

If the majority shareholder decide to push millions of units onto the floor of the market, they can as well force the price down and pay peanuts to buy out the minority share holders...

It can work both ways you know...

11 plc actually offers a somewhat sure route to some capital appreciation this time of uncertainty.

Same with that other company that's buying out some shares.
