Good evening Gazzuzz,

Some weeks ago, I noticed a leak on the left hand side of the engine of my car (RX 350). I gave my mechanic and he told me that the "sump" is leaking and that the leaking point would have to be welded. The leaking stopped until last weekend. I have called him to express my displeasure. Please Gazzuzz, what could be the solution to this, same point, same leak?

Thanks

Good Afternoon All.

Please I need help, my car vibrates/shakes moving between 30km/hr and 40km/hr. Anything above 40kmph, car drives smoothly.

I have four new tires with recommended psi, done wheel balancing and alignment.

Gazzuzz, kingreignn and any other persons who have experienced the same and got it resolved.

Car is a Toyota camry 07
Does vibration occur when you accelerate (or you depress the throttle pedal)?
What kind of balancing was done(static or dynamic)? have the wheels (rims) been inspected for bends/dents?
Are your driveshafts in Tip top shape?

What is the condition of your transmission fluid? Do you feel a shudder (which may be mistaken for a wheel wobble)?

Dear Nairalanders, can I possibly use 5w 40 synthetic oil as opposed to the normal 5w 30 oil without causing harm to the engine of my 2007 Toyota Highlander?

This lockdown has created so many problems. The 5w 30 isn't available where I am. Please someone should help out a brother. Thanks.

Your car manual recommends 5w20, or 0w20 for best performance... but if you still want to use 5w30 , I do have some in stock before the week runs out.. But due to the pandemic business has been on hold till further notice...

My engine oil are imported into Nigeria personally by me at great price.. So plz be on the look out

How Catalytic Converters work

In the catalytic converter, there are two different types of catalyst at work, a reduction catalyst and an oxidation catalyst. Both types consist of a ceramic structure coated with a metal catalyst, usually platinum, rhodium and/or palladium. The idea is to create a structure that exposes the maximum surface area of catalyst to the exhaust stream, while also minimizing the amount of catalyst required, as the materials are extremely expensive. Some of the newest converters have even started to use gold mixed with the more traditional catalysts. Gold is cheaper than the other materials and could increase oxidation, the chemical reaction that reduces pollutants, by up to 40 percent.

Most modern cars are equipped with three-way catalytic converters. This refers to the three regulated emissions it helps to reduce.

The reduction catalyst is the first stage of the catalytic converter. It uses platinum and rhodium to help reduce the NOx emissions. When an NO or NO2 molecule contacts the catalyst, the catalyst rips the nitrogen atom out of the molecule and holds on to it, freeing the oxygen in the form of O2. The nitrogen atoms bond with other nitrogen atoms that are also stuck to the catalyst, forming N2. For example:
2NO => N2 + O2 or 2NO2 => N2 + 2O2

2NO => N2 + O2 or 2NO2 => N2 + 2O2

Ceramic honeycomb catalyst structure.

The oxidation catalyst is the second stage of the catalytic converter. It reduces the unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide by burning (oxidizing) them over a platinum and palladium catalyst. This catalyst aids the reaction of the CO and hydrocarbons with the remaining oxygen in the exhaust gas. For example:

2CO + O2 => 2CO2

There are two main types of structures used in catalytic converters -- honeycomb and ceramic beads. Most cars today use a honeycomb structure.
