Guarantee is a strong word. Helpful the better word.

No certificate guarantees job. You still need to convince the recruiter, you need to defend it. No one will just hand you job just because you have masters.

But it can be an edge. It can be helpful. It can get you shortlisted for many job positions, especially in international organisations where masters is almost always a requirement. It is left for you to do well at the selection process after the shortlist.

Except you want to be a lecturer or have plans to emigrate abroad, use that millions you spend abroad in the name of acquiring a Masters Degree to start up a business.
Or better still, go for professional certifications and IT certifications. Then look for one small place to do internship to get a little working experience. Work experience is very vital, then couple with your professional certifications. It is only in academic environment that job is guaranteed with PhD. But to be honest with you,IT is the future, so try and look towards that direction rather than MSc without working experience.

NOTHING guarantees an income ANYWHERE on earth.

Your qualification can not always feed you in Nigeria.

Even a visa does not guarantee that they will allow you to enter their country at their airport.

We have to think MORE of using our brains to earn a living meaning that we have to work smarter and not harder.

An option many people ignore is to start a small scale business or a few small scale businesses and see how it goes and forget what people around you may say.

If the global Covid19 pandemic has taught us anything, it is that FOOD SELLERS WILL NEVER RUN OUT OF BUSINESS AND INCOME.

If you know the number of people in Nigeria that can open a mama put with just N50,000 you will marvel.

The simplest guaranteed business one can start that trumps any INSECURE job as an employee with minimal funds is a restaurant / Mama Put or just a pepper soup joint and if it means relocating to a cheaper state in Nigeria to open it then do so and if it means moving away / distancing yourself from close friends / family that may laugh at you then do so after all, in Genesis 12 God told abraham to move away from his family, his kindred, and from his father's house and in return he will bless him.

The biggest deliverance we need as Nigerians is not from demons but from other peoples opinions yet when you are dying of hunger these same people who hold you back from opening a "supposedly" lowly business choice will turn around and mock you even if you don't beg them for money.

Apart from those in the medical field anf food business, there is no job security any where in the world anymore and this is a price all employees have to pay.

If you insist onmore intellectual pursuits, what you can do to mitigate job insecurity is to find a skill that is in high demand (i'e where there is a shortage of people with that skill) and aim to MASTER that skill and pass the certification exams and then start applying for jobs.

Any intellectual skill where there are no barriers to entry becomes over subscribed sooner or later.

A Masters degree "may" be a waste of time and money when you can use a fraction of that money to do and MASTER an "in demand" IT certification course and once you pass the certification exams you are halfway to securing a good paying IT job.

There is too much theory in Masters degrees but if you knuckle down you can prepare and pass a "practical" hands on IT certification course in 3 months or less and start applying for jobs there after.

But you will have to put in a LOT of hours (maybe 14 hours flat per day) studying and practicalizing in those 3 months if you want to pass the certification exams which averagely have a pass mark of 70%.

Some "in demand" IT skills you can do your research on include C#, Java, C++, Big Data, Oracle Dba, Microsoft SQL Server, Hadoop, Mungo DB, Internet Security, Etc, Etc, Etc but search job boards online and pick a skill set you are comfortable with and then look into each one and see which of them will be a natural fit for you and that will use some of the transferable skills you already have.

BUT because the IT field is so wide and is still growing daily and will continue to do so till eternity you can never go wrong if you proceed to master an "IN DEMAND" IT skill and pass its certification exams.

All the best.

It is well, but how were you able to fund two masters degrees while you don't work?...
For the record though!

It doesn't. At least in Nigeria. I have 2 masters degrees. However, I proceeded to do my PhD as I couldn't get a job.

Since growing up I have always been accustomed to the idea of double up my degree.
Not like it's a bad thing but what purpose does it serve to run a Masters or PhD program in the long run.

My Dad is always telling me to do one program here and there. It gets tiring honestly as I don't consider myself an academic per se and I would only put in effort when I see something is absolutely necessary.

A cousin of mine once went to the UK for her masters, previously working at a brewery. She told me that going for this program would guarantee her an upgrade in department level

Has anyone here gotten any similar experiences, share your story or those you know of. Were you ever selected for a job based on that or a promotion?

Please go for your M.SC (not professional masters) if you have the means. Most multinationals and banks recently (I know of Ecobank) now includes M.SC. as requirements for even Trainee positions.
It equally prepares you for opportunities in Academia and international NGOs.
Most importantly, don't go for Masters degree for the purpose of getting a job only but do it with the best of your abilities and learn new skills and ideas in your field.
If you can come up with a ground-breaking research in your field, that alone can take you places.
Yes, in Nigeria you can succeed without connections if you know what you are doing.

U can succeed I agree but pray ur village people are asleep when u go for that ground breaking interview,if not there is no guarantee.

No having Master Degree don't garantee job rather experience do here in PH if you have master with no experience someone with OND with good experience on the job will take your job or will be your boss in 2018, in one of our pipeline project thr construction manager had OND but 30years good experience we were all under him both MSc, HND, BSc, BEng. So bros na experience get am.
That's it. It is the professional experience the Employers will be looking out for first before any other thing. When you now have Masters degree in addition, then that gives you an edge over others. So what we are saying in essence is this.Masters degree is good no doubt but you need to set your priority right.

You didn't mention that it also depends on your field or course.

A course you finished bachelor's degree and couldn't get a job. What makes you think that deepening it would mean anything?

Did you create any job?

Why do you wanna spend so much money on masters when getting a job is not guaranteed or getting a job that can pay your level of knowledge... why don't you just use the money to start a Business of your choice or invest into something that is very profitable and boom, you'll start counting thousands, millions and even billions. # Mafo o, he fit enter Trillions cheesy

what I do advise ppl.. M.Sc. doesn't guarantee a job. if you wanna dabble into academics or wanna be a scholar.. then go for. your msc which preceeds you to. P.hD level.. buh if yu wanna be in the industry learn a skil gain experience go for. certification and climb up. the ladder..
but note most of us that did msc and stil go. into. the industry hav upper hand of going for PhD in the future.. so. most just keep there msc for. future purpose.

Common sense you no get, how could have two masters degree, I mean not just one but two

First master degree no give you work, then you proceed to another master degree and no work still, you come proceed go do your PhD still no work? Why did you not use the money for business? Guy go and burn those degrees.

Well, the money for the degrees weren't yours actually that's the reason for this recklessness.

I know say na the PhD you take apply for N-power 30k

My brother, there was a guy who I worked with some years back in a mortgage company in Nigeria. The guy had a degree and a master from Birmingham's university in England, I came with our local degree and yet my salary was bigger and this guy earned just 70k as monthly salary.

One day,I called and asked him why he used huge sum of money to travel abroad only to secure a 70k job,he said, only if he had known the trend in the country he wouldn't have tried it. After I left them and moved to another job,I heard he had started a business.

Nigeria is frustrating, the merit system has been bastardised and no one can be so certain of getting a job these days and I wonder what our children will go through if we dont correct certain things in this country.
