Forget technology. Bitcoin is simply a store of wealth due to scarcity and wide acceptance as a digital currency.

I'm not an IT guy but the technological use of Bitcoin as a blockchain ledger has been rubbished since 2016. It was simply viewed as a currency which fulfills the most important characteristic of a currency ie scarcity since there is a finite amount of Bitcoin that can be mined. So any investment decision you make must be made in that context. For example, when people are dissatisfied with conventional stockmarkets eg during this Coronavirus, they switch their holdings from Conventional stocks to Gold, Government Bonds and Bitcoin.

Almost every coin released from 2017 to date was built on the Ethereum blockchain which was seen as technologically way superior to Bitcoin but again, even though it was used for creation of tokens, the technology underpinning Ethereum does not quite deliver fully on the promise of a decentralized public ledger which is why they seem to be working on what they call a hard fork, which will be a different token altogether eg Ethereum 2.0, same way the current Ethereum token hardforked from Ethereum Classic token in late 2016. Ethereum though has an unlimited supply and can be mined forever unlike Bitcoin so is not a store of wealth (currency) like Bitcoin. If it cannot be harnessed as a technology, it will disappear in the long run, unlike Bitcoin which has more long term guarantee as a currency for people to trade across borders without fees or for people wishing to hide wealth from Govt etc

Bitcoin is actually a smart way for some gov't officials to hid their wealth since it's virtually untraceable and not regulated by any board. Imagine having your banks accounts frezzed and you have $2m worth of Bitcoin in your wallet unknown to efcc.

What I'm saying is over the next 2 years, buy Bitcoin when the price is below $5k and every few months you will get the opportunity to sell above $8k. Likewise, buy Ethereum when it goes below $150 and you will get the opportunity within few months to sell above $200.

I can't tell you long term that any of these two will blow. Anyone who tells you so is either an influencer, a marketer or has serious holdings and is trying to drive the price up for their own benefit. Same way in 2017 the same people said Bitcoin will go above $100k by 2020.

What I am advising is simply to play the game based on Economic principles. Most of Bitcoin and Ethereum are held by very few people who will not sell below a certain price. These are the creators and initial buyers of the coins, for example only 1,000 people own 40% of all Bitcoins. They control the bottom of the market below which they will not sell. That bottom right now is circa $4k for Bitcoin and $120 for Ethereum. So set your entry and exit points according to my first paragraph above.

On a more long term projection, Bitcoin is more guaranteed to stick around as a currency (although no one can tell you the price in 3 to 5 years) while Ethereums survival is simply hinged on whether they deliver a truly useful technology which may or may not happen.
