NTA has 30% share, while the Chinese has 70% share and run by the chinese. To be honest apart from premier League is DSTV better than StarTimes?
But is it an abomination for startimes to be showing premier league matches? They only aired the game on Saturday and it must be a match that falls within 3:00pm. They need to acquire the right.

You are right Sir.

But, I think if care is not taken a different cable TV company will soon take over the Nigeria Tv rights.
Nigeria is strong enough to invite the most strongest cable TV from, UAE, UK, Germany, Spain, USA etc
If the govt listen to the pleas of Nigerians, then it could be a bye bye to the multi choice.

We already have cable TV in CTL, Metro, etc but surprisingly they are being persecuted and their signals kidnapped.

This is not the first time we are hearing this and honestly we don't care. I'm sure nothing will be done by the time the DSTV drop some millions. To put an end to this monopoly, I believe we the subscribers have a lot to do. We could stop subscribing for a month to protest our displeasure to this endless increase in tariff. DSTV is so useless that even during the lockdown when service provider like MTN are giving 10 free SMS per day, DSTV can't even leave the basic Nigerian station like Channel and TVC when subscription expires. I believe we the subscribers are the only one who can break their monopoly and bend them to stop taken us for a ride. If we wait for the government that song will change when they are bribed, then we are in for long thing
You are very right.

Pay per view can't work in a country that can't boast of at least 10 hours steady light a day. I wonder how our so called leaders think , if I was to be in their shoes I will move rather for a reduction in subscription fees to a reasonable price ,DSTV sub fee na big ripoff that way the investors and customers are both happy.

OK...so prices get so reduced that DSTV cannot pay anymore for Premier league rights, among other things?

Right....

When you are running your business, you better pray that government does not listen to Nigerians who are asking them to cut the prices of your services by 50% for poor Nigerians to afford it.

Actually, she is RIGHT.

Below is the cost of DSTV COMPACT BOUQUET in some selected African countries. All prices are in Naira/naira equivalent.

Nigeria: N6975
Zambia: N7,050
Angola: N7967
Kenya: N8,931
Ghana: N9,340
Liberia AND Sierra Leone :N9,700
South Africa: 9,098
Zimbabwe: N11,292

All prices are correct as at June 2020

Thanks o Jere!!

Many idiots here will still say that your lying that these are not the prices. Yet they won't carry their phone and browse dstv website for all those countries.

I say again, the problem is not with the pricing, its with your wages.

All this is just a smokescreen. Same way we keep petrol prices artificially low to make it seem like the people have a benefit, so they won't remember to take on the government.

Venezuela that we all used to say is oil producing nation and petrol is N30 per litre, where did it lead them? The country bankrupted itself during the crude oil price crash of 2015, to the extent that the country could not afford to import food and medicines. Their citizens had to be walking to the border of other countries to but them.

Thats like all of festac walking to benin border to buy medicine and food.

Una no dey watch International news for cnn?

This dunting effort should channel towards our power sector and not DSTV... Cable TV is by choice afterall we have nigcomsat, startimes

channeling all efforts toward power sector is tantamount to fetching water into a basket ... considering so many uncontrollable factors surrounding that sector compared to dstv that can be easily restructure & controlled.
In developed countries pay as you go is the major mode of subscription, which applies even in SA why should it be different in nigeria, why should nigerians alway pay 4 what they did not use or enjoy.
NB: monopoly of certains service suspends "choices" lets dem share with tstv only then the word "choice" go make sense. abegg

Dstv, mtn is not a monopoly.. Mumu people.

Any company that has the money can come and compete but the real issue is is there any company in a country filled with poor people that can compete with a brand like mtn and dstv that has a solid foundation

DStv has no monopoly over the market. The subscriptions are one of the cheapest in the world when compared to dollar rates. The industry is opened for all and DSTV is making the most of it.

Soon you'd see the premier League taken off DSTv because of rising premier league costs and dwindling naira value. undecided

Nigeria has the cheapest DSTV subscription price in Africa adjusted for exchange rates. TV rights for all those Premier League or Champions League you enjoy and license fees for all those international channels are not cheap at all. If you can't afford it, find the cheapest bouquets or don't subscribe at all. No be by force to get DSTV. I'm tired of international companies being held to ransom despite operating in one of the most hostile business climates in the world. DSTV have proven their mettle over decades of operating in Nigeria and these incompetent buffoons in power should find more productive engagements rather than trying to over-regulate well run industries.

Dstv subs in Nigeria are the lowest in Africa.

So the only reason, they put the law was because of startimes a govt company.

They want to collect things for free without paying.

DSTV agent is what you are" stop trying too hard defending your pay master, what Nigerians want is not impossible. Pay per view is the best alternative for the working class family ' most families work 7am-5pm in Nigeria and the only time they enjoy family Union is 6pm -10pm so who loose.

Dstv may be right in their prepaid sub plan. Nigeria has a high poverty index so the number of people subscribing to any plan is very low when compared to other African countries. The Nigerian government has no economic or moral right to blame dstv instead they should channel the blame to themselves because they made Nigerians poor.

Bros, you don't know how pay as you go works in practice. If you knew,. you won't be advocating for it here in Nigeria, because you would end up paying far more than you do now for your DSTV subscription.

A question often asked is: Why can we not have a pay-as-you-go model for pay-TV as we have in telecommunications, where subscribers pay for what they use?

The answer is that both industries operate differently. Very differently. How? Telecoms service providers do not buy content like pay-TV providers do because they are not in the business of providing entertainment content. What they buy is spectrum, for which they make a one-off payment.

Entertainment content is not bought on one-off basis. Pay-TV providers continually pay for content, with an upward review in cost when contracts for such expire. Going by this, the pay-as-you-go model in telecommunications does not fit the pay-TV industry. Pay-TV companies are, by and large, agents or vendors. They do not always own the content they broadcast. Content owners do not sell to vendors on pay-as-you-watch basis, an arrangement that does not accommodate the vending of such content on a pay-as-you-watch basis.

Pay-as-you-watch model, if ever adopted, will hinder rather than help the subscriber because of its prohibitive cost. It costs about N2,000 to watch a movie at a cinema. One movie.

If a pay-TV provider charges the same sum for a movie, subscribers are cooked! Now, if you find the movie you have gone to watch at the cinema unexciting after 40 minutes, do you get a refund? Of course, not. It is the same with a football match you have paid to watch at a stadium.

Pay-TV companies are also unable to go back to those who sell them content to demand a refund with a complaint that subscribers find their content tedious. Content contracts leave no room for such.

Subscribers often hinge their demand for a pay-as-you-watch model on the fact they are billed while not watching, probably when at work or out of town. The truth is that it cannot be otherwise.

The technology used in pay-TV broadcast transmits signals in just one direction: to the decoder. It is called downlink. It does not send back to the pay-TV provider. That way, the provider has no way of knowing whether or not a subscriber is watching or what he/she is watching. The only thing a provider can do is to block the smart card from accessing signal when subscription has expired.

Pay-as-you-watch is assumed to be a pocket-friendly usage billing model, but it is not
. A semblance of that exists in the United Kingdom, where TV and broadband packages are tied together.

For example, BSkyB’s Now TV offers access to Sky’s seven sports channels as well as some entertainment and movie channels on smartphones, games consoles, tablets and similar devices. A subscriber need not have an active Sky subscription to enjoy the service because it is exclusively internet-based.

Payment, which is daily or weekly, depends on the package. For the entertainment package, the sum is £6.99 (N2,380) daily. The movie package costs £9.99 (N3,400) daily. The sports package costs £6.99 (N2,380) daily and £10.99 (N3,740) weekly. The model does not allow a subscriber to pay for only channel on any of the packages, as the content is sold in bundles.

Now, add the cost to that of the data you need to view your favourite content and work out the cost. And in a country where internet connection can be relied upon to be unreliable, pay-as-you-watch is not as appealing as you assume. Remember, you cannot demand a refund from the subscriber in the event of patchy internet service.

I hope you understand now...

You are right but that's not the kind of package I expect from DSTV. Mind you by God's grace I'm a subscriber for one of their top package for years now. Even though they are purely to make profit, I believe they would do good to leave the major news channels such as Channel TV and TVC few days after expiration. You will only enjoy NTA for free

OK..here is what they were doing with BeIN...they were taking Bein signals and rebroadcasting them in Nigeria re Premier league and Champions league. Without paying for them...and because Bein was not authorised to broadcast premiership in Nigeria, or Africa , they were in trobule with the Premier league rights issuers.
What kind of scamish behavior was that.(even unethical self)

Once upon a time , the cable sattelite company ABG was broadcasting premier league in Northern Nigeria until 2003, when DSTV took over. They had to stop.It angered a lot of people up Nwth, but that's just business.

OK...so how long should we have waited for them?

If I was owning a shop and I was saying I am selling Corn flakes...and you come and I tell you 'Sorry, we don't have cornflakes, we will have it soon, and I cannot tell you how soon, but you can take this pack of Ogi/Pap instead...what would you think about my business.? Will you wait for me, or would you go to my competitior who is selling corn flakes ??

TSTV na scam company.

TSTV WAS STILL TEST RUNNING THEIR NETWORK WHEN THEY BROUGHT THEM DOWN....Many satellite Station didn't just start all of a sudden.... They test run their service first but that wouldn't stop them from advertising what their services would be during this testing period

Test running...when they were offering decoder., and saying they have launched service? And even had sales agents across the country.

TSTV was not serious, and they knew it. HiTV even did better than them when they started.

The guy behind TSTV should go and get more financing, and get better prepared. Not try to build brand on lies and wuru wuru practices.

Honestly I'm not complaining. I'm only saying our government can't do anything regarding the DSTV case except we the subscribers do something. By God's grace I have been using one of their top package for years so I understand we are operating in pure capitalist economy. However, any promised by any government to force DSTV to reduce their tariff is a fallacy.
