OK...so prices get so reduced that DSTV cannot pay anymore for Premier league rights, among other things?

Right....

When you are running your business, you better pray that government does not listen to Nigerians who are asking them to cut the prices of your services by 50% for poor Nigerians to afford it.

Man Don't believe that shit DSTV say about not being able to pay for premier league tv rights they can surely agree on a fee that benefits multichioce and customers at the same time. If they don't make profit do you think they will still be in Nigeria grin grin even Mtn that was fined close to 200 billion are almost done paying up. Man DSTV rip off Nigerians that's the truth.

Are you in Kenya or Ghana yourself??

The man has showed you we pay the cheapest rate for the same content , and you are still saying we are being ripped off??

Look, DSTV is not the problem, the problem is our rich men don't want to invest in a similar company that would do the same as DSTV. That's why we have a 'monopoly'

Kenyans and Ghana pay more than we do for the same packages. If anything., DSTV has been too nice to us self. Otherwise, we would have been paying 30000 naira for premium self.
making more money comes from subscriber base not little difference in pricing.

Was that really what happened or hitv was out bidded for the exclusive premier league right. Even dstv that as been long in existence bearly survived that year 200? hitv took the right exclusively. A prompt govt intervention could have safe the day, even if its mean sharing d right 60-40.
What killed hitv was not misappropriation of funds like you insinuated buh rather lack of funds to match an established firm. infants firms are suppose to enjoy protect, support & intervention from govt.

The broadcast rights for the Premiership for each region goes to who ever offers more money.

HiTv took a loan from GTBank with which they paid for the rights when they outbid DSTv.

What was left for them was to broaden their customer base, block all leakages and improve on their product offering so they would be able to recoup the cost and therefore be able to renew the licence when the time came.

The CEO was supposed to come up with strategies to sustain the business instead he was busy gallivanting all over the place spending money he did not have and generally forming nouveau rich meanwhile he was not servicing the loan from GTBank.

When the licence for the Premiership expired and came up for renewal the bank pulled the plug and refused to provide finance, that was what sunk him because DSTv simply took back the Premiership which is the icing on the cake as far as cable TV is concerned in Nigeria.

The business of providing cable TV in a country with poor infrastructure is highly capital intensive and requires a long incubation period before it even starts yielding profits...most Nigerians do not have the patience for it and this is one of the reasons there has not been a formidable competitor to DSTv yet.

DSTV agent is what you are" stop trying too hard defending your pay master, what Nigerians want is not impossible. Pay per view is the best alternative for the working class family ' most families work 7am-5pm in Nigeria and the only time they enjoy family Union is 6pm -10pm so who loose.

Bros, the internet exists for a reason. Research.

If DSTV implements pay per view....working class familes won't be able to afford it at all.

The reason is given below

Subscribers often hinge their demand for a pay-as-you-watch model on the fact they are billed while not watching, probably when at work or out of town. The truth is that it cannot be otherwise.

The technology used in pay-TV broadcast transmits signals in just one direction: to the decoder. It is called downlink. It does not send back to the pay-TV provider. That way, the provider has no way of knowing whether or not a subscriber is watching or what he/she is watching. The only thing a provider can do is to block the smart card from accessing signal when subscription has expired.

Pay-as-you-watch is assumed to be a pocket-friendly usage billing model, but it is not. A semblance of that exists in the United Kingdom, where TV and broadband packages are tied together.

For example, BSkyB’s Now TV offers access to Sky’s seven sports channels as well as some entertainment and movie channels on smartphones, games consoles, tablets and similar devices. A subscriber need not have an active Sky subscription to enjoy the service because it is exclusively internet-based.

Payment, which is daily or weekly, depends on the package. For the entertainment package, the sum is £6.99 (N2,380) daily. The movie package costs £9.99 (N3,400) daily. The sports package costs £6.99 (N2,380) daily and £10.99 (N3,740) weekly. The model does not allow a subscriber to pay for only channel on any of the packages, as the content is sold in bundles.

Now, add the cost to that of the data you need to view your favourite content and work out the cost. And in a country where internet connection can be relied upon to be unreliable, pay-as-you-watch is not as appealing as you assume. Remember, you cannot demand a refund from the subscriber in the event of patchy internet service.

In other words, under a pay per view package, you will end up paying far more than the current system.

No thanks.

Jokers! DsTv already 10 steps ahead of this dumb government. That's why they won't be renewing exclusive rights for EPL, Champions League etc. So they will just about break even at worst, and at best, they will still out perform all the competition. How many years down this line and NTA upon all the govt money and backing, is still a useless station and network that nobody wants to watch.¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Which break even. If DSTV don't deliver Epl and UCL what is the now the use of their decoder?
You think someone will be paying over 10k a month to be watching African Magic.

Not true. I can talk about DSTV sub prices in South Africa ( the headquarters of multichoice), and they are at least 2000 naira more than what people pay in Nigeria. So it’s possible that Nigerians pay one of the lowest Sub prices across Africa.

What value is being given to u over there?
What is the content of your package in comparison to the content Nigerians are given!

In most of the countries you talk about, it's not always a fixed price! There are Months you pay much lower ..

Nigerians are being riped off !

Their content is terrible!
The picture quality is poor!
The local movies are endless repeats.
The foreign movies are endless repeats!
The only current content comes from AIT ,Channels and NTA news.
The only current sports are the German Bundesliga and the Europa league.
And before you counter me I have the dish and pay for their premium content so I know what I am talking about. While I agree DSTV is also rubbish without the premier league and are ripping Nigerians off because I also subscribe to their compact plus bouquet Startimes is certainly not a good alternative at all.

The picture and audio quality is slightly better than GOTV in my opinion.
See the picture below from the HD decoder using antenna at just 34% signal strength. The TV also affected the quality because it is not a full HD TV and I also took this picture at a very close range in front of the tv.

Something like this is not bad.

They have both SD and HD decoders. SD decoder gives poorer picture quality

I have heard this claim several times that we pay the lowest sub. I am beginning to doubtthe rationale though. The reason; a lot of household sub for one month but end up enjoying only a few days worth-many times not up to even 10days-because of our electricity situation. Example again is those that show ball. The pay hugely for a month but only show some sparsely games.
The calculation is that we are actually paying more for what we get compared to many other countries. If they feel this my assumption is not true, why can't they just make it 'pay as u go'. That would be the logical and fair thing to do

Because, as I have explained upthread, a pay as you go service would end up costing the consumer more money than the packages service on offer.

Let's use an example...you watch a movie every night on DSTV with your 3 hours of power. Under PAYG, you spend N2000 per movie per night. That means in one month, you may end up paying 62000 naira. (for paying for the content you want to watch)

By the way, premium subscribers on DSTV can watch some movies on a Pay as you go system. They press the green button, and then pay for the movie they select. That money is on top of their subscription. Of course that's additional cost.

That's the sad truth.

And many DSTV subscribers have generators and solar. It's only a few who don't have that.

A cheating and greedy govt is calling a private firm a cheater. How many job has this govt created but Dstv have given many Nigerians jobs. I believe my assertions where apt, and didn’t require any tantrum but facts, if any.

Any businessman that knows his onions should by now be aware that the Nigerian environment favors foreign companies who easily set up in Nigeria (thanks to their parent countries support) and engage in massive capital flights, no thanks to myopic and colluding public and private/banking officials.

Btw, a good number of Nigerians (and their leaders) are some of the most unpatriotic nationals on the face of the earth (ask any well traveled expatriate). They consistently sabotage the country, and by extension, its people.

But no you are so educated that you don’t know all these but think people who have done, and managed businesses both locally and internationally, and know what obtains elsewhere lack education (according to your assertions here). Or are you a Dstv staff (please refer to assertion about lack of patriotism above).

Just awhile ago, Nigerians, and their businesses were being targeted by mobs FREELY in South Africa. Not much was done to stem the tide by the SA government. Instead, their government even went further to setup more laws to further protect their people’s jobs and interests (this was in order as long as the xenophobic attacks were stopped).

Conversely, a similar mob action against SA franchise stores in Nigeria met with stiff policing and prompt arrests that quickly turned the tide. A measure far better than the SA response by a wide margin.

But now that the government is trying to look at ways to protect the Nigerian public from monopolistic tendencies if price hike amidst the economic downturn (same way discos were asked to stand down on their price review), you feel empowered to throw shades because an SA company is affected? angry

Put forward your arguments, if you have any?

Xisnin:

You guys need proper business education, DSTV is not a monopoly.
You or your government are free to set up a new cable TV as a competitor
but I guess you won't.

You want someone else to risk their capital to invest and at the same time
force them to lower prices for you. You can't eat your cake and have it.

Friendly advice, if you don't like the price, stop using DSTV, it is not food or air.

All this is just a smokescreen. Same way we keep petrol prices artificially low to make it seem like the people have a benefit, so they won't remember to take on the government.

Venezuela that we all used to say is oil producing nation and petrol is N30 per litre, where did it lead them? The country bankrupted itself during the crude oil price crash of 2015, to the extent that the country could not afford to import food and medicines. LOL..

If government started paying for HiTV's Premier League bidding, when was it going to stop paying?

Billions of dollars to HiTV so that less than 20% of the population can watch some English football on Saturday? In a country with a large population of poor people.

Could GT bank have kept waiting for centruies for its loans to be paid? Shey you know why we had failed banks in the 1990's...because people did not pay back their loans to said banks. And they collapsed. And GT bank was one of the banks that survived that era where many of its contemporaries failed....

HiTV failed because they had poor content apart from football. Comapred to DSTV, their offerings were weak. As a result, not enough subscribers, and thus they fell down drastically.

If you are doing business, by the time government comes to be bailing you out, wahala dey...both for you and government.

Obama that bailed out car companies in the US, up till today people are still blasting him for it.

I take it you don't av a deep knowledge of business, we are talking a lucrative business here, infact the govt stands to benefit in three awesome ways.
1. hitv is an indigenous firm, revenue made will reflect & boost our GNP.
2. Loan attracts interest rate ... which means enjoy interest base on the duration of the agreement.
3. creation of more jobs: staffs ,marketers & distributor.
It in the best interest of every developing nation to protect & support infants indigeneous firm ...cos investors revenue won't add to our GNP
I can emphatically tell you dstv is overhyped, if you live in an area with gud power supply supply you will know there are lots of repetition in there programs ,i watch 2020 movies on ghana tv then i pay on dstv only to be shown movies of 3yrs & above, only music, news & sport be recent program ... when hitv took exclusive premier league right, dstv merely survived despite they've been established, from what i know then if hitv had beaten dstv 2 the right again, maybe dstv would av pack n Go as well.
That people blasted obama is irrelevant, he made the right move cos he took america out of recession. between politicians embezzling public funds or using it as loan to support indigenous firms which one will benefit the economy.

1) If you own a business, the sustainability and profitability of your business matters far more than convenience to consumers. DSTV can't run themselves out of business to satisfy cheapskate Nigerians.
2) Most Nigerians don't know what pay-per-view means. Pay-per-view is a means of purchasing live-event and special one-off programs like boxing matches, concerts etc. It is not a substitute for basic cable. You can't watch CNN or National Geographic on pay-per-view. What many Nigerians think it means is "pay-as-you-watch". A UFC event for example usually costs around $65 on pay-per-view in the US - which is almost N30,000. Just one UFC event! DSTV shows UFC events as part of their package. Not just on Premium bouquet, but I've even watched some on Compact Plus.

Look at our exchange rate and look at our annual inflation. Our economy is in the gutter and companies are laboring under one of the harshest business climates in the world. Nigerians already pay the cheapest rates in Africa for DSTV subscription and still keep whining. We should stop trying to blackmail companies with our poverty. Those companies come here to add value and you're expected to pay for the value and if you can't afford it, leave it.
