The thigh is a big part of the body, and you can stan and drag down the knife to cause serious injuries. The injury also usually looks worse than it is unless you have cut a big vessel .
He probably thought he killed her and she would die on the streets or she would get help and police would eventually come to arrest him.
There was an eye witness account which cannot be simply dismissed because she is a relative.

investigation needs to be done the story doesn't add up. if he stab the woman on her laps and she escaped how did he now stabbed himself so easily.

Something is not adding up in this whole saga. There is more to it. Let's the law enforcement agency do their investigations very well. I suspect the woman killed the man
