Tough people like us don't require services of attornies to represent us. personally, I represent myself in all legal matters. So you can see why the demand for lawyers are fast decreasing. My only need for a lawyer is to keep in custody, my will or testament and execute same when the need arises.

Very soon you will find yourself in a QUAGMIRE that you will regret not first consulting a lawyer!!!!

truth be told law is the most lucrative career ever. you can be broke today and tomorrow you can earn 100 million naira just like that. i know a guy like that named dagogo karibi whyte.. he is a lawyyer with gazillion dollars. the thing about law is that it is not meant for everybody. if you dont have an enchanting personality and tonnes of charisma just forget it. now with an enchanting personality yu will eventually find your way into the gas and oil sector or hanging with some rich politicians and you will be the one brokering deals for them and writing the legal documents and you will earn like 100 million naira a day. that is the story of my man dagogo karibi whyte.

and so yes law is extremely lucrative but if you lack charisma and the ability to schmooze with rich men just forget it

The truth of the whole matter is that the profession is over saturated as someone has already pointed out.

I had a very high hope that I would hit it big after law school but have come to realize that the available lucrative briefs in the industry are reserved for the connected or those that are opportuned to join few esoteric spiritual circles in the society.

Law is a noble profession. It is not for the poor or unconnected. My advice to every young lawyer is to upgrade your class and finance in order to join a social circle that can bring that big brief. You may travel out of the country for a while and come back when you upgrade your status.

A lot of lawyers and judges are into fraternities. It's all about your level of connection. But you can be successful and survive on hardwork and consistency even though it's going to take time

The profession is lucrative but the old ones are usually consulted for real cases that can fetch money while the newbies are only consulted when we need to give notice to our tenants .

All professions in Nigeria are suffering so Law cannot be an exception. Doctors,Pharmacists, teachers, surveyors etc are all having the same issue. However people are still excelling in the aforementioned professions. So speaking as a professional(Estate Surveyor) myself I think the strategy should be to do pupilage for a set period and go into practice either as a lone ranger or a structured partnership. During the pupilage don't expect much but use it as a period to learn and specialize. You can then run your own firm and pay yourself.

No course is useless, the reason for high unemployment is as a result of failed policy on the part of government. If the highlighted courses weren't studied but acclaimed science courses,we will still have high unemployment rate.

In my opinion, I think it's no longer as lucrative as it used to be and it's a very sorry situation. A lot of lawyers roaming the streets, they are suffering. Some of the many problems are

1. Too many graduates, little job slots

2. Senior colleagues are not ready to give the younger ones a chance

Most lawyers are "charge and bail" . They roam the streets and advertise their services to potential clients and they don't even have a place to call office. Many of them loiter in court premises all day under the hot sun and await the arrival of the police, hoping that the police would bring some accused persons who do not have lawyers to defend them. The moment this happens, the lawyer would approach the accused (usually agberos, louts and unfortunate Nigerians who the police had decided to transfer his frustrations on. ) and offer his service either directly to the accused persons, or through his relatives or friends who followed him to court. After a certain meagre fee is paid. The lawyer will appear before the magistrate and orally apply for bail, which in most cases would be granted if the offence(s) is a bailable one.

Being a lawyer in today's Nigeria is overrated, studying in school for 5 years to become a lawyer is a waste of time. To me it's more meaningful if used as a part time job while you venture into business or entrepreneurship.
In Nigeria now, studying law is a waste of time and resources!

Unless your family is highly influential or politically connected!

Law now na yeye course.

This epistle is for aspiring lawyers and for non lawyers who don’t understand the profession. There is no profession without challenges, the only reason law is being addressed here is because it is unique! Studying engineering or sociology or agric economics does not guarantee you success, what guarantees success is your being good in what you do and Gods Favour, time and chance plays a big part in success stories.

Now being a lawyer does not only entail court practice, there are lawyers in banks, oil companies, telecoms etc most organizations have legal departments. The benefits of being a lawyer include, if you join the civil service including the armed forces you are given one level ahead of your mates, also you can do the job of a sociologist or political scientist and even an accountant if you are a smart corporate lawyer but most of these professions can’t do your job! If you travel abroad, US for instance, and decide to work as a lawyer all you need to do is pass the bar exams there, you are internationally recognized, you don’t have to go through the school process again. Another good thing is while working in a normal position you can also do legal consultancy while holding down you salary job, ultimately you are a professional and can work for yourself and start your own thing, you can’t go hungry if you are smart and resourceful. The knowledge and prestige is also there, get a law degree and have some /honesty/passion and you are an asset to your community and a good candidate for political positions. Why do you think a lot of made men go back to study law. The judicial arm of Govt is almost exclusive to lawyers, which profession has an arm of Govt to themselves? The National Assembly are not called law makers for nothing. Forget charge and bail, you are what you make of yourself, even some charge and bail are doin well, bail and representation for a big case is big money, breakthrough money and any lawyer can handle it from a green horn to Senior Advcocate. The beautiful thing about law is that broke lawyer you are seeing today can really make it overnight legitimately, he can hit big, not yahoo hit big o. Anyways love lawyers, it’s legal!

Nigeria needs to liberalize the legal profession.
It's admission and practice as at today is over regulated.
Graduates of law of national open university of Nigeria should be allowed to undergo the law school.
The more should be the merrier where excellence is the norm.
In the US law practice in California and new York is among the most liberal, competitive and excellent.
where are the billion dollars mass action suits in Nigeria, a country riddled with atrocities by POLICE, power utility companies,, politicians etc.

To be a successful lawyer, you have to be sociable. Your social life should be top-notch. That's how you find clients. Carefully pick the area you live in, the church you attend, join clubs, be active in old students' associations, maintain contact with people you meet.

Be a problem solver. If your community wants to write to the commissioner of police over security issues, volunteer to write the letter. If your church wants to acquire a property, help them conduct search and prépare the deed of assignment. Your old students association needs a constitution, volunteer to draft it.The idea is everyone must know there's a lawyer around who can help résolve their issues.

Visit friends and acquaintances in their offices at mid-day. Just say you were driving by and you décided to say hi. You will be surprised at the briefs you would get. In the course of your discussion, they will remember someone is owing them and they need you to help them recover the debt. They will give you the file immediately. They can also remember there is a property they are considering for purchase. Offer to do search, deed of assignment and c of o. Some will tell you their tenants have refused to pay rent. Offer to help them administer the property as a whole. That's how you make money as a lawyer.

There are so many unexplored opportunities in the legal profession... the problems with new lawyers is that they come into the law profession with salary mindset. "You can't pay a lawyer"

The law student who made this post is purely misguided. the legal profession is about what you can offer. there is always money for a lawyer. lawyers are paid 30k but sometimes more 200k monthly.

if you allow what you see or hear discourage you then you were never suppose to study law in the first place.

OP...are u a lawyer/Law student...

I'm a Law student and I have few years b4 I graduate but as of recent..I've been discouraged abt the course...The course is great alright but it's not in demand and I'm not ready to spend 5yrs and spending more than 300k in law school and get paid 20k a month.. So I'm learning a skill that will make way for me...
One reason that made me give up on the law profession is the fact that Law schools in Nigeria are churning out thousands of Lawyers in a country that has legal apathy. They'll prefer to "leave the matter to God" than to fight it in court hence depreciating the demand for lawyers
Another thing is that it's very competitive.... from what I've heard ..it takes a while to get to top of the ladder in the legal profession..abeg..I wan make my Papa quick enjoy the fruits of his labour
And the third reason I gave up was that my roommates in the hostel don dey call me charge and bail grin. I don dey reject am..So a whole me..A Law graduate that spent 6 years in school will be hanging around the court and be shouting "Bros u get case"
I've already decided that I'll just get the cert for people to know that I'm a graduate..

Simply my opinion...Don't disturb me

please what skill are currently learning now

That is what makes a good lawyer.
