This is serious because during our time no body cared how we were disciplined. Hmm...

Well... As the bible rightly says, spare the rod and spoil the child. I'm not going to spare the rod so I dont spoil the child. Hence the need to include flogging.

To me the best way to discipline a child is by flogging cos so far that is what has worked for me as a teacher. Then sometimes a hot slap across the face (for me o). But everything has to be moderate.

I dont fancy placing a child under punishment cos it could cause a sprain or permanent damage in some part of the body. So I'll rather flog and get it over with.

Reward and punishment

What is your child favorite activities, once you know it, when the child does bad, cut that activities off, when the child does good, reward him

it works like magic.

you can spank your kid when the child does something that might led to his destruction that is to reinforce that you are in control, but brutalizing your kid is a big NO

know when you are going extreme in reinforcing punishment

Warning, counseling, stern looking, beating, flogging, denying him what he likes etc. Please note that the environment you are raising your child,to an extent determines the disciplinary measure to adopt.

Sit him or her down and explain what is wrong with his or her action. Emphasize the consequences of the child's behavior to his/her development in in life.

2-12 flogging in love

Foolishness is in the heart of a child but the rod of correction drives it away.

13-whenever , heart to heart talk with minimal flogging

Lead by example, children have a natural instinct to copy whatever they see around them. If they see the parents being rude to others, being violent, greedy or two faced they will emulate them. A lot of Nigerian parents have a "do as I say and not as I do" behaviour, we can't sow corn and expect beans to grow.

Be consistent, if you tell a child that something is wrong and carries a punishment or reward follow through and don't dodge it or give an excessive punishments or rewards because they will see you as unreasonable.

Allow them to make mistakes because mistakes are a learning experience. I noticed that a lot of the people who cheat in exams wanted to get prizes or avoid the wrath of their parents at all cost. Failing and learning is better than cheating and coming out half baked.

Last thing is actually tell them about the world, don't shy away from uncomfortable or or difficult topics because you are letting other influences take their place and teach them something else.

Also note that everyone is different and you should seek various sources of expertise before coming to an conclusion about how to do something as important as raising another human being.

You don't need all these you are doing. The guy that intentionally write like that, not as if he doesn't know better. So, your corrections won't stop anything or make him to change

If you cant differentiate between Discipline and Brutalization of a Child, then you have No-Buisness coming near children.

It is the ability to Discipline a Child, without brutalising that Child, that makes you and Adult or a Parent.

By pretending you want to beat him, don’t let the cane touch him and make sure the boy is smart. Set your phone on record and post your argument with the boy on twitter when you’re done

How about you teach your child, be example, mentor him, monitor his progress and make changes in your own life where necessary before resorting to flogging?

Children respond well to a lot of words and examples from parents.
I hate to cause my children pain or traumatize them in the name of discipline.

Very True!

But in addition, there is also a role for the Cane!
Flog a Child, if stubborness is in hi sheart but NEVE flog a Child when you are angry, that would lead to brutalisation of the child.
Flog with love, care and the intent to help the Child to understand the need for a change.
Explain in very clear terms to the Child, why the Cane has to come-in and afterwards, DO NOT NEGLECT the Child, draw him closer with love and help him rehabbilitate. undecided undecided
Always worked for me.

Simply talk to them and make them understand the positive and negative consequences of whatever they do.
Be harsh and soft, they should never be able to predict what U'd do to them when they misbehave.
Play politics with them.
My nieces and nephews love to be around me and become more composed than with their parents sef.
I sabi flog sabi talk sense to them make their conscience judge them in many occasions.
So no universally defined way of making children calm and compose. Just examine the situation and treat appropriately.

True but even after all that, ONE DAY, you will hear "Mummy Calm down now?, l just want you to calm down like this (can you see my hand grin grin )

This topic is a cultural decision which should be argued constantly on TV stations. The background of the child actually determines the kind of punishment they get. Some children have access to phones , games , allowances and cable TV with which one can use the "carrot and stick " approach with , but what of children that do not have access to this luxuries .How would you use the approach?
A pupil I teach started crying just because I shouted at her and threaten to advise her mother to seize her phone and deny her access to the television. She wept so much and she begged me not to report her, at the end of the day her mother had to come out because she couldn't control her tears and she was crying out loud. She apologized later.
You will agree with me that I do not need to beat her to discipline her, won't you?
But I have come across some other kids who will tell it to your face that they don't care , obviously such kids aren't afraid of losing some luxury as they know they can always go behind you to enjoy it.
Another case was of a young girl whose Dad threaten not to take them(siblings included) abroad because she wasn't serious. Immediately her father said that , I noticed a more serious and determined attitude from her.
My point is , children differ base on their background and access to certain luxuries ;some are very emotional and can be spoken to like an adult ;some need a little bit of shouting ; some, one can use the "carrot and stick approach" while others one should never fail to crack the weep . Whatever you do, do it with love and not with anger.

Proverb 22:15 foolishness is bound in the heart of a child;but the rod of correction will drive it far from him/her. Proverb 23:13 to 14; withhold not correction from the child, for if you beat him, he shall not die
