Flogging is the best way to shape a child, yet Nigerians are still the worst set of humans, even to themselves. Rubbish.

Flogging is biblical. Provide 22:15. Let God be true and let all men be liers.

We're talking about reality, you're talking about fiction.
Not everyone is a Christian abeg.

1. Sit them down and interact with them as friends. They will be free with you and adhere to your instructions.
2. Use the moral lessons from the scriptures to talk to them.
3. Ensure you keep to your word to punish for any disobedience.
4. Flogging with cane should be done rarely and with care. Don't flog with cane or beat with hands when you are angry.
5. Be calm enough to hear their reasons for committing such offence(s).
6. You can make them do more house chores as part of measures to discipline.
7. You can deny them some of their rights and privileges...the offender can be excused from outing, gifts, etc..
## Pray with them.

BE LIKE THANOS....PERFECTLY BALANCED.......Flog the child when it is well deserved also temper justice with mercy, sometimes a simple mistake is just a simple mistake, give second and even third chances but when it becomes a pattern bring out father belt or brother koboko....Kids mainly want to know why you're flogging them, the lectures, the talk can be just as much effective as the flogging. For example my father would have us stand for 30 to 45 minutes and he would discuss everything from his childhood to what happened to other kids who disobeyed their parents, this lecture was torture and sometimes we actually begged to be flogged.

All in All....BE LIKE THANOS....Let them know that if they misbehave, DISCIPLINE IS INEVITABLE!

Beating is for animals.
There are other civilized ways to discipline kids not by treating them like animals cool

It's funny to see people referring to 'flogging' as ancient, and advice whatever. A child will definitely lack manners if he/she is not flogged appropriately. Even when the child gets to 15 and above, flogging should be substituted for slap on the face. The way kids behave these days, I fear for the future. Just like someone above me said, those above 30 or so, had no nonsense fathers, and it helped shaped their lives.
That is not true. Inspite of the floggings many kids receive while growing up, the society had remained in a bad shape

You know why African parents flog and European dont flog? Cos Europeans provide privileges they can withdraw. African parents can't afford privileges so they resort to flogging.
Africans flog because they still have that colonial mentality in them. The colonial masters used horsewhip to discpline their fore fathers

Let me give a disserted view from a bible scholar on discpline. This will answer your question on the word rod.
"Christian parents frequently seek the Bible in their effort to raise godly children. They believe that there is a biblical mandate to spank and they fear that if they don't spank, they will commit the sin of losing control of their child. They believe that God has commended them to spank and they take “spare the rod and spoil the child” literally, but in doing so they misunderstand the concept of the rod. The following are the biblical verses which have caused the greatest confusion:
1.He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.” (Proverbs 13:24)

2.“Folly is bound up in the heart of a child. But the rod of discipline will drive it far from him.” (Proverbs 22:15)

“3. Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish him with the rod he will not die. Punish him with the rod and save his soul from death.” (Proverbs 23:13-14)

4. “The rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to itself disgraces his mother.” (Proverbs 29:15)
At first glance these verses seem to be in strong support of the use of corporal punishment, but do they really? Through a closer examination of the Hebrew word for “rod” (shebet) one can see that in the Hebrew dictionary it has various meanings, a stick for walking, writing, fighting, ruling, and punishment. The word “shebet” is most frequently used when referring to shepherds who are tending their flocks. The Shepherds used the stick to fight off prey and to gently guide wandering sheep, not to beat them
Reread the passages above and replace the references to punishment and the use of the rod with the word “accountability” and the meaning stays the same.

For example:
Proverbs 13:24 would read, “He who spares accountability hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.”

Proverbs 22:15 would read, “Folly is bound up in the heart of a child. But holding him accountable will drive it far from him.”

Proverbs 23:13-14 would read, “Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you create a culture of accountability he will not die. Create accountability and save his soul from death.”

Proverbs 29:15 would read, “The culture of accountability imparts wisdom, but a child left to itself disgraces his mother.”

Christians believe that the bible is the inspired word of God and yet while holding fast to interpreting the “rod” in the Proverbs passages above as a mandate to spank, they dismiss other passages that seem too harsh by today’s standards, such as, “Anyone who attacks his father or his mother must be put to death.” (Exodus 21:15) or “If anyone curses his father or mother, he must be put to death. He has cursed his father or his mother, and his blood will be on his own head.” (Leviticus 20:9) Almost every parent would admit that their child has at one time said, “I hate you.” or “You’re not the boss of me.” or maybe, “F--- YOU.” But no one would say that their child should be put to death. And we would all agree that that child needs to held accountable for their choice in behavior. The Bible simply does not support spanking, it supports holding children accountable.

Read many books about back then, I am yet to see flogging apart from occasional flares of anger where a father beats up a child with his fists, nothing like whipping.

Yah the ones who had been flogged, is it not them that are ruling us now, is it not the same people that are all around us. My dad was flogged did that stop him from behaving the way he behaved, rubbish. Let us keep on deceiving ourselves, Africa would always be behind in everything. Rubbish.

Wow and out of all the ones that did not have "peer influence" or "bad parenting" where are they? So all the Nigerians that have been seeing went through "bad parents" and "peer influence" complete rubbish, I tell you. Flogging a child does nothing except for expose that child to violence, I can tell you that 90% of African fathers beat their wives and believe that it is a good thing, what about the huge amount of corrupt people in this country? Let us not continue with those questions self.

I think before flogging a child, you should make him understand that he has done wrong,so he won’t feel he’s been oppressed. My opinion,

Lemme wait till I marry and become a mum.
With that said, I'd raise my kids the same way my parents raised me cos it fashioned me into a better lady in all spheres today.

Flogging and advice from parents did it for me.

Encourage the child to always say the truth by not punishing and shouting when he or she does wrong. Always correct kindly and if the child does it again you can ask them to kneel down, raise their hands and close their eyes for 20 minutes or even 40 minutes because they hate it and will surely cry.

I repeat, dont ever let your kids cultivate the habit of lieing, that is the worst thing that can happen to a parent child relationship and the consequences are more than who stole meat in the pot. They could be bullied or sexually molested but they wont tell you and on and on and on

aww thats cute, but you need to look a bit longer and ensure he understands he needs to serve his punishment since hitting him is never an option.

Serious beating with rod, or sweating punishment when younger (like 3 to 12 yrs old).

After that, strong rebuke and removal of certain privileges always reset the the teenagers rebellious nature.
