nemesis8u: Hi! Just curious, so can you explain the utility of arty systems like these when counter arty radar systems are proliferating like mad? I mean, why have a towed and emplaced arty system like this when the enemy will soon get a fix on it and blast it? |

GabrielYulaw: If u note except for one , all are mobile systems , either mounted on HMVs or with integrated self propulsion unit for scoot and shoot mission. Even than artillery guns are placed on the reverse slope of mountains / hills or embankments etc to afford protection against counter fire . Also it is also not always that easy to get a fix and start counter fire because the order side will already be targeting your artillery with own counter fire using own counter artillery radars. Only those who have superior range and accuracy ( first hit first kill ) will triumph regardless of owning counter artillery radar systems. Superior tactics and mobility will also be an advantage. 3 Likes |

Russian PTKM-1R anti armour mine It detects a tank as far as 150-250 meters away from it with a thermal imager and then launches it's payload into the air which then searches and acquires the target and then fires a EFP at the vulnerable top section of the tank 4 Likes 1 Share

Another Russian game changer in the tac aviation field! Imagine an Mi 8 with near Mach 1 speed! The Ka-90 takes off like a regular helicopter. When the vehicle gains required altitude, rotor blades form an arrow-shaped wing, and the helicopter starts flying as an airplane. In this form, the aircraft accelerates to 400 km/h. Afterwards, the blades fold completely backwards and the aircraft accelerates to 800 km/h. When landing, all actions are performed in the reverse order. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVtBWau3iPY |

PRE RADAR AIRCRAFT RECOGNITION-WAR TUBAS! Basically acoustic detectors were developed by many countries prior to Radar. https://mashable.com/2015/02/16/war-tubas-radar-wwi/ The last is one of the earliest acoustic detectors,a pair of USN amplifiers in the 20s. You can see how they got larger and more sophisticated. 2 Likes 1 Share

The elevation angle of ATAGS is considerable , this allows for highly steeped lofted trajectory of shells inorder to hit targets on the reverse slope of a mountain/hill 3 Likes

GabrielYulaw: Possible |
Re: Technical Discussions On International Military Equipments Doctrines Tactics Etc by Nobody: 6:02pm On Sep 02, 2020 |
GabrielYulaw: Would certainly make things difficult for the current configuration of APS but I think it is possible to overcome the anti armour munition by altering the algorithms of the radar of the APS and increase the radars FOV to a larger altitude inorder to detect a munition with a lofted trajectory . Correspondingly the kinetic effectors elevation angle will be increased so that a munition in a lofted ( or parabolic ) trajectory can be engaged in flight before it can fire the EFP. Currently the APS can engage a target at lofted or parabolic trajectory ( eg ATGMs in top attack mode ) but the main difficulty it will face while engaging the Russian munition will be due to the very low minimum engagement range ( 150-250 m ) that too in a lofted trajectory and very low reaction time available with the Russian munition, thus making it difficult for the APS to engage the same with 100% guarantee. Element of surprise will be more or less with the Russian munition . 2 Likes |

nemesis8u: Thanks for the explanation. But from what I'm aware of, Active Protection Systems can only engage missiles and projectiles traveling at a certain speed. Thus, they can't engage bullets fired at them, cos bullets travel too fast. With that being the case, how will an APS engage the Russian mine when it fires its explosively formed penetrators, given that these travel at hypersonic speed? |
