US says it will continue to back South Korean candidate.

The World Trade Organization’s General Council Chair David Walker said Wednesday that Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala had garnered the most support among WTO members to become the next global trade chief, a WTO spokesperson said.

The United States said, however, it could not support the candidacy of Okonjo-Iweala and said it would continue to back the South Korean candidate Yoo Myung-hee.

Walker and his colleagues have finished a long process of consultations, where each member could indicate their preference. Walker told WTO ambassadors Wednesday that Okonjo-Iweala, and not Yoo, was most likely to secure a consensus among the membership, which is needed to select the next chief of the global trade organization.

However, the suggestion of Walker and his colleagues is not the final step of the process as some members can veto their suggestion, which the U.S. now threatened to do.

WTO members must formally decide in their General Council meeting who becomes the next director general. This meeting will happen on November 9. Before then, there will be consultations.

I thought she just acquired a US citizenship last month? Why are they now trying to frustrate her? It's obvious Trump's administration doesn't like anything relating to Nigeria. Same Trump and his goons attempted to remove Akinwunmi Adeshina of AfDB on trumped-up corruption charges yet some Nigerians think Trump is the best thing since sliced bread. Our mumu go soon do.

cool

USA under Trump is something else, yet Igbos or igbos see him as their messiah, the same way they tried to stop akinwunmi adeshina of Afdb.

They might be wondering how a lady from a corrupt shithole like Nigeria will be in charge of a sensitive position like the WTO.

Good but Mr fergie001 your topic is misleading

US didn't veto anything but sticks on their preferred candidate.

after all China, EU and Japan sticks with Iweala and China alone contributes to 12.4% trade statistics while US has 12% of trade.....

US will have to swallow their pride this time around. They are just kicking unnecessarily.

China, EU even Japan are a whole lot of strong backing plus over 90 countries joined together.

US is one of those countries that can veto.
If consultations aren't successful....nothing will happen on Nov 9.

One of you say..

after all over the years US has moved in line with EU and others but of recently it hasn't been so.

Before 9 all consultations will be successful. US will have to agree to other veto powers also.

Let the consultation continue.
