From the little research I've done, 80% of Nigerian state capitals (apart from Lagos and Abuja) have enough wealthy people to sustain at least, 2 schools, each with 1000-1500 students charging 2.5 to 4 million per annum per student.

2.5 to 4m pa is quite much for a secondary school, especially outside lagos and Abuja.

I mean Covenant University charges less than 1m per annum, I suppose.

except if you're talking full boarding, where feeding and some other basics become your responsibility.

Even at that, 400k per term, translating to only 1.2m pa would be more like it.

Remember a good percentage of folks in those states who can afford the bills are already past secondary school training with their kids. the millennials and generation X folks who have kids in high school are on a comparatively lower financial percentile.

There are also those who've already enrolled their kids in Lagos, Abuja Accra, etc.

Finally, there's competition to consider.

You may want to check the performance (enrollment) of schools like Faith Academy in those states versus places like Lagos and Abuja.

I'm sorry if I sound pessimistic, I don't mean to.

Why don't more people and churches invest in hospitals, I reckon they would make more profit.

Very correct, A friend of mine lives in Lagos and wanted his kids attend Faith Academy - Lagos campus.
But after the regular interview, the little girl barely 10 was posted to their Kwara state campus, because of high number of candidates jostling for placement in the Lagos campus.
That said I think @Lazyouths did excellent job analysing the requirements for a successful high-end international school

Not only Loyola Jesuit but all the catholic schools except the minor seminaries. In the catholic boarding schools, during Ramadan, those that want to fast are allowed and special food is prepared for them in the morning and breaking of fast accordingly.

Since when has high school fees become a yardstick for good education? am in support of Large and qualitative public schools to equip the massive with the basic education and skills necessary for production .....if the massive are not educated well who will run the factories and business established by the raging capitalist......is a win win for everbody

Good you brought this up. I keep asking myself this question.

Most of the standard church owned hospitals we have were those built by the missionaries. Very few if any have been built recently. But then, we have lots of new schools springing up. I personally believe part of the reason has to do with profit.

The new church schools charge good fees and make sure parents pay even before the term resumes. No parent goes there and starts asking for free education.

On the other hand, we know how people attack doctors/hospitals here anytime the issue of payment for health services is brought up. Most believe they should get health services for free and the cost borne by the hospital because of some 'hippocratic oath'. I believe that's why most churches have steered clear of opening new hospitals. What happens when people turn up for urgent/emergency treatment and refuse to pay afterwards. Any action taken will bring bad publicity.

That said, I believe bigger Nigerian churches can do more in terms of building new standard hospitals. Just like most of the mission hospitals set up in the past. If well run, they can also generate profit just like the schools

I am guessing you are talking about world class tertiary care (specialist) hospitals like what we find in developed countries. The answer is huge capital outlays and high running costs that can eat all the hospitals revenues. To build a 50 to 100 bed world class specialist hospital, location is key. For Lagos, you are looking at areas that are accessible to those that can afford the services so we are talking Ikoyi, VI, Lekki, Ikeja and maybe Yaba and Surulere. Land doesn’t come cheap. Specialist equipment are very expensive and get obsolete very quickly so you need lots of cash for frequent replacements. You will need to hire world standard specialists and surgeons to relocate and live in a ‘shit hole’ like Naija. Their salary requirements, accommodation costs and benefits/allowances in USD are huge. Don’t forget security costs and generator/fuel costs as you need 247 electricity. Also, you need to set aside lots of cash to run the hospital and pay huge salaries in fx to your expatriate doctors and specialists while the hospital’s patient base ramps up to break-even levels. We are talking at least USD25m to USD50m in total costs here.

By the time you put all these into consideration, some patients will find it cheaper to just travel to India for their procedures because the fees charged in Naija will be huge due to the high running costs. Then you have the poor members of the churches (and the public) that require specialist care that the hospital cannot afford to turn back for reputational reasons. Put all these into consideration and you are staring at huge losses.

Many of these organizations have carried feasibility studies and due diligence on these projects but changed their minds last minute due to concerns around commercial viability. For example, a couple of years ago, AXA Mansard planned to build a 150 room world class specialist hospital and even received debt and equity financing from local and international organizations like IFC, Africa Capital Alliance PE fund and ADB. But I don’t think this worked out as I haven’t heard anything about the project in a long time.

There is huge demand for specialist care and there are some decent and semi decent specialist hospitals scattered around Lagos but these are in no way comparable to what you will find in developed countries. I believe we will see these world class hospitals as soon as the cost of doing business in Nigeria drops. Government can also do a lot to expand and better equip our Teaching hospitals that cater to the general public.

Nigeria today does not need the most sophisticated Hospitals when good public health sanitation routines are not adhered to..................... So many companies are dumping toxic chemicals into our water ways, nobody is challenging them,,,,,,, Farmers today are abandoning Age old practices and using all sort of chemicals on their farms, Nigerians are not voicing out.........

The only reason the military is being questioned now for the lekki shooting is because the protesters were termed "peaceful" at that toll gate.
