The Supreme Court ruling restraining the federal government from implementing the February 10, 2023 deadline phase out of the old N1000, N500, and N200 notes is irrelevant, non-binding and a distraction, according to a CBN legal opinion on the matter seen by THEWILL.

“Neither the CBN nor deposit money banks were parties to the suit filed by three state governments (Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara). The state governments simply took advantage of the fact that in matters purely between state and the FG, the Supreme Court can serve as the court of first and only instance. Joining the CBN in the matter would immediately rob the supreme court of jurisdiction,” the opinion said.

BEVERLY HILLS, November 08, (THEWILL) – Fresh facts have emerged that the embargo placed on the bank accounts of some leading supporters of the #ENDSARS protests was the result of an instruction from the Department of State Services (DSS).

THEWILL gathered authoritatively that it was the DSS which ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to freeze the bank accounts of 19 persons and a firm found to be backing the protests.

The security service was also said to have directed the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to stop several promoters of the protests from leaving or entering the country based on intelligence information that they were being used with or without their knowledge by both international and local conspirators to forcefully remove President Muhammadu Buhari from office.

Multiple sources familiar with knowledge of the development told THEWILL that DSS Director-General, Yusuf Bichi Magaji, who had been covertly monitoring the #ENDSARS protests advised the Presidency to immediate accede to the demands of the protesters because it got real-time intelligence that some unidentified persons had infiltrated them and wanted to use the protests to instigate the removal of the president from office.

An independent panel of experts, headed by former Irish president Mary Robinson, has cleared the President of the African Development Bank (AfDB) of corruption, according to a report obtained by AFP.

Akinwumi Adesina, 60, a charismatic speaker known for his elegant suits and bow ties, became the first Nigerian to helm the AfDB in 2015 — but a 15-page report earlier this year claimed that under his watch the bank had been tarred by poor governance, impunity, personal enrichment and favouritism.

The panel of three experts, led by Robinson alongside Gambia’s Chief Justice Hassan Jallow and the World Bank’s integrity vice president Leonard McCarthy, cleared Adesina of all charges alleged by whistleblowers.

Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, has been arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) over allegations that he owns four properties and that he was allegedly transferring funds abroad through a third party.

He was arrested at the Wuse II office of the DSS on Monday afternoon and is now undergoing interrogation at the DSS Headquarters In Aso Drive.

The DSS had in a 2016 report accused Magu of living in a N40m mansion paid for by one Umar Mohammed, a retired air commodore who is allegedly involved in shady deals.

“In December 2010, the Police Service Commission (PSC) found Magu guilty of action prejudicial to state security – withholding of EFCC files, sabotage, unauthorised removal of EFCC files and acts unbecoming of a police officer, and awarded him severe reprimand as punishment.

SAN FRANCISCO, June 4, (THEWILL) – President Muhammadu Buhari has nominated Nigeria’s former Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, for the position of Director General of the World Trade Organisation.

Nigeria had earlier nominated Yonov Frederick Agah, Nigeria’s permanent representative to WTO, for the position, according to a news report by Thisday.

In a Diplomatic Note no 146/2020 by Embassy of Nigeria and Permanent Mission to the African Union and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, to all embassies and permanent missions in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the Federal Government announced the withdrawal of Agah’s nomination and its replacement with that of Okonjo-Iweala.

The paper said it sighted the diplomatic note.

BREAKING: Supreme Court Nullifies Kalu’s Conviction

BEVERLY HILLS, May 08, (THEWILL) – The Supreme Court has quashed the judgement that convicted and sentenced the former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor-Kalu, to 12 years imprisonment.

The apex court, in a unanimous decision by a seven-man panel of Justices led by Justice Amina Augie, held that the Federal High Court in Lagos acted without jurisdiction when it convicted Kalu, his firm, Slok Nigeria Limited and former Director of Finance in Abia State, Jones Udeogu.

It held that trial Justice Mohammed Liman was no longer a judge of the Federal High Court as at the time he sat and delivered the judgement that convicted the defendants for allegedly stealing about N7.1billion from Abia state treasury.
