Travel / Re: My Experience In America: A Comparison With Nigeria by qtx(m): 1:48pm
steeltrust:
Since moving to America in 2023, I've been impressed by the country's infrastructure, including steady electricity, good roads, clean water, and gas etc. However, I've also noticed some flaws, such as gun violence and mental health issues.

One thing that struck me is that many Americans seem to have forgotten their history and culture especially the black folks. Additionally, there's a tendency to complain excessively about every issues.

Despite these issues, I've been impressed by the job market. Many companies, such as Amazon, UPS, Walmart, McDonald's, and Costco etc , offer well-paying jobs with benefits, even for those without certifications or experience. These jobs often come with benefits like medical insurance, life insurance, and retirement plans.

In contrast, I've noticed that many Nigerian companies, such as Dangote Industries, Jumia, Chicken Republic and other big companies, don't seem to offer the same level of employment opportunities or benefits. Which are in same category as the companies mentioned above in America. Many workers in Nigeria earn low wages and are mistreated by management, even when these companies earn billions of naira annually.

It's time for us to ask important questions and seek solutions. We need to move beyond tribalism and religion and focus on creating a more equitable society.

*Solutions:*
1. *Increased employment opportunities*: Nigerian companies should strive to create more jobs and offer better benefits.
2. *Vocational training*: Companies can provide training programs to help employees develop new skills.
3. *Improved working conditions*: Employers must treat their workers with dignity and respect, providing safe and healthy working conditions.
4. *Government support*: The government should implement policies to support workers and hold companies accountable for their treatment of employees.

Let's work together to create a better future for Nigeria. What your take
Well, you are correct to some extent. However, Amazon, JP Morgan, and the rest you mentioned don’t suffer electricity problems, bad roads, insecurity, corruption, and much more. Companies in Nigeria have their own challenges militating against their progress. We need to appreciate this fact as well.

Islam for Muslims / Re: Shariah Law In Southwestern Nigeria: Clearing The Misconceptions by qtx(m): 11:11am On Jan 31
Lukgaf:
Shariah Law in Southwestern Nigeria: Clearing the Misconceptions and call for tolerance and coexistence

The recent opposition to the establishment of Shariah courts in southwestern Nigeria—particularly in Oyo, Ekiti, and Ogun States—is yet another example of non-Muslim resistance to Islamic rights and practices.

This is not new. We have seen the same pattern before:

1. When Muslim students wanted to wear hijab in schools, they faced fierce opposition, even though it did not affect non-Muslims. Alhamdulillah, the Supreme Court has upheld their right to do so.
2. When Islamic banks like Jaiz were introduced, they were met with criticism. But today, many non-Muslims are customers of non-interest banking.
3. When Sukuk bonds (a Shariah-compliant financial instrument) were introduced, there was an outcry. Today, the Nigerian government and businesses rely on them for infrastructure funding.

Yet, after all the noise, many of these same critics eventually embrace what they once condemned.

This raises important questions:

- Why do non-Muslims feel so threatened by practices that are exclusively for Muslims and do not affect them?

- Why is there such an obsession with opposing Islamic initiatives when they are not compulsory for non-Muslims?

- Why is it difficult to allow Muslims the freedom to practice their faith in a way that aligns with their beliefs?

Shariah courts are not mandatory for non-Muslims. They are a constitutional right for Muslims who prefer to handle personal affairs like marriage, divorce, and inheritance through Islamic law. As highlighted by Barrister Muideen Olagunju, the only type of Shariah applicable in the Southwest is Muslim Personal Law, covering: marriage and marital issue such as divorce, inheritance and maintenance.

Currently, while Islamic marriage is recognized by law, Muslims who want to divorce must go through customary courts, where the judges may not even be Muslims. Similarly, if a Muslim dies and the family goes to court, the property must be shared according to Yoruba customary law (e.g., Idi Igi or Ori Ojori), instead of the Islamic inheritance system, which ensures fair distribution beyond just wives and children.

The unfairness here is not the establishment of Shariah courts, but the denial of a legal system that allows Muslims to practice their religion fully.

What Shariah Law is NOT
Shariah courts in the Southwest will NOT impose Islamic law on non-Muslims.
Shariah courts will NOT replace the existing legal system.

Non-Muslims are NOT affected in any way.

Just as Christians are not forced to use Shariah courts, Muslims should also not be forced to use customary courts that do not align with their religious beliefs. Is that not fair?

Many developed countries where Muslims are a minority allow Islamic arbitration for Muslims. Yet, in Nigeria—a country where Muslims are at least 50% of the population—why is it a problem when Muslims request their rights?

It is time to let go of baseless fear and unnecessary opposition. Just as Christians have their rights, Muslims also have theirs, and neither should interfere with the other. Live and let live.

The reality is, just like the hijab case, if this opposition continues, it will eventually go to the Supreme Court, which will affirm the right of Muslims to have Shariah courts. So why create unnecessary conflict when peaceful engagement can resolve the issue?

Let us respect each other’s beliefs and allow all citizens to exercise their constitutional rights.

May Allah guide us all to truth and justice. Ameen.

Abu Afs Lukgaf

(Many thanks to Barrister Muideen Olagunju and others who initiated this discussion on Facebook, from where this thread is inspired.)

Sharia Law should not be implemented in Southwest Nigeria for the following reasons:

1. Harsh Punishments – Sharia Law enforces extreme penalties that many consider inhumane. For instance, individuals accused of adultery may face amputations, while petty thieves—such as a hungry man stealing a goat—could have their eyes removed. Meanwhile, political leaders engaging in far worse offenses often escape accountability and continue to wield power with impunity.

2. Religious Coercion – Sharia Law restricts religious freedom by compelling individuals to adhere to a particular faith. Those who choose to leave Islam, including children, often face severe persecution, including threats to their lives. This contradicts fundamental human rights and the principle of freedom of belief.

3. Constitutional Conflict – Nigeria is a secular state governed by its constitution, which is the supreme law of the land. No other legal system should override constitutional provisions that guarantee individual rights and freedoms. The imposition of Sharia Law would be inconsistent with Nigeria’s legal framework and democratic principles.

The issue goes beyond sentiment—Sharia Law has no place in Southwest Nigeria for those who understand the implications.

Health / Re: Help!!! I Am A 31-Year-Old Struggling With Tramadol Addiction!! by qtx(m): 10:26am On Jan 30
Samantha125:
Tramadol... I nearly got addicted to that thing last year... I got it as a prescription from the doctor and at first, I also hated the feeling after taking it... Hallucinations, dizziness, feeling hot, constipation, having stomach cramps whenever I was hungry... I eventually stopped taking it because I couldn't deal with all those side effects.

But something happened and I had to resume taking it again, but this time I noticed that it was giving me this energy I didn't have before and I'd be hyperactive and at peace with myself... It became my coping mechanism for a while until I ran out of the pills.

It was only when I found myself begging for one more pill that I realised that I needed to stop before it was too late... I've heard how addictive it could become and I'm glad I was able to restrain myself while there was still time... So I wish you all the best in fighting the addiction.
I wonder how people survive taking that thing. Years back I was ill, and it was prescribed for me at a hospital. i didnt even know was a TM, but after i took it for like twice, the reaction was something else. I went back to the hospital, and the doctor said, "Oh that means you react to TM," and i was like shio! TM ? i thought the health management agencies kick against the use and he said yes, but it can be used with a medical prescription. I said, 'Dr., give me an alternative.'" In fact, I became well immediately after I stopped taking it. The reaction of TM is something you shouldn't try to get used to. @OP, pls seek help from the nearest hospital or rehab home. Don't waste time. That issue of seizure alone should make u run out to find help. It is well with you.

Well, from your rants, you keep exposing your executive ignorance the more. Kanu has not been sentenced to jail by any court either for terrorism or defamation, so he is not serving any prison term and therefore is just in detention. I hope you have learnt that today. The audacity of criminals in 2025. Is Kanu locked up because he stole iPhone?
Ignorance is huge in your generation. If Kanu defamed anyone, getting a transcript will not stop Kanu from suing Ahmad for his own defamation. It is left for whoever Kanu defamed to sue Kanu and not for Ahmad to stop Kanu from suing him. Secondly, if you get videos of killings by IPOB, you still need to provide ample evidence to convince the court that they were IPOB killing them and that they were sent by Kanu to kill. Court is all about evidence and not about sentiments and emotions.

If Nigeria is a real country, anything or anyone that partook in Buhari's government, if not in jail, would be in exile by now. That is part of the reason someone like Ahmad still has the balls to defame people freely and willingly.
