Crime / Police Parade Undergraduate, Others For Kidnapping by quickgetpay: 9:56am On Oct 05, 2019
An undergraduate of Computer Science at the Adamawa State University, Abdulbasit Umar, was yesterday paraded by the Taraba State Police Command for kidnapping his 10- year-old biological sister, Amina Umar.

The 22-year-old student, who was paraded alongside with his accomplices, Sadiq Dalhatu Sani (21) and Abdullahi Habib (27), who he allegedly hired to carry out the act, were all arrested following a tip-off.

Parading the suspects alongside 19 other kidnappers and armed bandits, the Police said the suspects were responsible for the kidnappings in Gassol, Bali and other parts of the state.

They were also paraded alongside arms, ammunitions, a vehicle and other accessories used in carrying out the acts.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), David Misal, said: “The mastermind of the crime, Abdulbasit Umar, who happen to be a biological brother to the victim, has on the said date, criminally conspired with other suspects and lured the innocent girl into a blue Honda Hennessy car, with registration number, Kaduna MKF 67JK, and took her to Dove Hotel along Mayo Dassa road in Jalingo, where she was held captive.

The suspects, he said, contacted the family and demanded for a ransom of N10million, but later accepted to collect the sum of N4million.

In the process of collecting the ransom at Wuro-Sambe in the outskirts of Jalingo, they were tracked and arrested, while the victim was rescued.

Umar explained that he staged the kidnap of his sister to make his father cough out N10million to enable him travel abroad.

His other accomplice, Sani, a 300-level Geology student of Modibbo Adama University in Yola, said he has been a childhood friend of Abdulbasit, who sought his assistance to perpetuate the act.

Crime / EFCC Arrests 3 For SIM Swap Fraud by quickgetpay: 9:35pm On Oct 02, 2019
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Makurdi has arrested three suspects for conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretence to the tune of N7 million.

The commission’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, made this known in a press statement in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to him, the suspects are Adewuyi Adebayo, 31; Osikoya Gboyega, 44; and Akintunde Ogunrinde, 47.

“They were arrested at different locations in Lagos and transferred to Makurdi, Benue.

“The petitioner alleged that on Feb. 18, 2018 he noticed his MTN line had stopped working as no calls or messages came to his phone and the phone displayed a message saying, ‘invalid SIM card’.

“He went to the MTN office to lodge a complaint but was told to apply for a welcome back SIM.

“That was not successful as someone else had swapped his SIM card in Abia.

“He immediately contacted his account officer at FCMB to inform them of the development and to change his alert phone number to another line only to discover that transactions had occurred on his account without his consent.”

Uwujaren further said that the threshold limit for online transfers on the petitioner’s account had also been increased above N500,000 and the sum of N7,107,540 removed from his account.

“Further investigations revealed that the suspects masterminded the alleged fraud. The suspects will soon be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.”

World Cup winner Mbappe, 20, has been sidelined with since the victory over Toulouse on August 25. He missed the surprise midweek loss to Reims.

Chairman of the task force, Mr Olayinka Egbeyemi, in statement said: ”during the raid, five notorious miscreants and nine commercial sex workers were arrested with illegal drugs, and the brothel demolished” he said.

The unit chairman further said that the raid became necessary following complaints that the increased criminal activities around Mile II and FESTAC areas were being perpetrated by miscreants residing in the brothels.”

“The brothel where these persons were arrested had previously been demolished, but surprisingly, it was rebuilt.

“Let it be known also that the last time we demolished this illegal brothel, miscreants taking refuge in it attacked our officers with dangerous weapons.

“With this current demolition, we will ensure that it will not be rebuilt, this task force under my watch will not allow miscreants to make life difficult for law-abiding citizens,” he said.

Egbeyemi said that the demolished brothel allegedly harboured criminals who robbed unsuspecting members of the public of their valuables.

“It also serves as an outlet for the sale of illegal drugs such as Indian Hemp, Tramadol and other sex enhancement drugs, especially to under-aged children,” he said.

He said that all those arrested would be charged to court in compliance with the directive of the Lagos State Police Command.

Sports / Roma Fan Banned For Life Over Racist Abuse by quickgetpay: 12:04pm On Sep 27, 2019
Italian top-flight club AS Roma have banned a fan for life and informed the police of racist abuse aimed at Brazilian fullback Juan Jesus.

Roma said on the club’s official Twitter account it had filed a police complaint against the fan for using social media to send “disgusting racist insults” to the player.

“The person responsible will be banned from #ASRoma games for life,” the club said.

Italian football is regularly beset by racism controversies with players of African origin often targeted for abuse.

Sunday’s Italian league match between Atalanta and Fiorentina was halted for several minutes after racist chants were aimed at the Tuscan side’s Brazilian player Dalbert in a game played in Parma.

Inter Milan’s Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku and AC Milan’s Ivorian player Franck Kessie have been targeted by monkey calls this season.

Blaise Matuidi, Kalidou Koulibaly and Moise Kean were also victims last season.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino on Monday made a plea to “kick racism out” of Italian football.

Politics / Court Threatens To Imprison DSS Boss Over Sowore’s Detention by quickgetpay: 5:10pm On Sep 26, 2019
Federal High Court, Abuja, Thursday threatened to send the director of Nigeria’s Department of State Security (DSS) Yusuf Bichi to prison for refusing to release Sahara Reporters publisher Omoyele Sowore despite a court order.

“Take notice, that unless you obey the direction…to release the applicant in suit FHC/ABJ/CS/915/2019, forthwith you will be guilty of contempt of court and liable to be committed to prison,” the court said in a notice to DSS director.

“The court has been informed that even as at today, Thursday, September 26, you are yet to comply with the lawful order of the Federal High Court by refusing to release the applicant namely; Omoyele Sowore, in your custody.”

The court on Tuesday ordered DSS to release Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) from its custody.

The court, however, asked him to deposit his international passport with it before he is released.

The judge, Justice Taiwo Taiwo, said the law provides for the freedom of all Nigerians regardless of economic or political status.

He ruled that there was no extant order allowing Sowore’s further detention before the court after the expiration of the 45 days it granted DSS to detain him.

“The order of the court has expired. It has not been renewed and cannot be renewed in view of the motion ex-parte earlier withdrawn,” the judge said.

“The liberty of all Nigerians high or low, poor or rich is guaranteed by the constitution.”

“It’s for this end that I’m of the view that the defendant ought to be released forthwith.”

While Sowore remained at DSS custody, the court directed it to comply with the order or be guilty of contempt of court.

Sowore was arrested by the DSS Saturday, August 3 for planning a nationwide protest tagged #RevolutionNow.

He was charged on offences of treasonable felony, money laundering, terrorism and plots to overthrow President Muhammadu Buhari.

Sports / Egypt FA Confronts FIFA Over ‘missing’ Votes, Salah Angry by quickgetpay: 8:16am On Sep 26, 2019
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has written to Fifa for an explanation of its missing votes for the Best Fifa Men’s Player award.

The EFA says that Pharaohs’ acting coach Shawky Gharib and captain Ahmed Elmohamady placed votes for Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah that were not counted.

Neither are included in the voting breakdown on Fifa’s website.

Since the awards ceremony, Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah has removed ‘Egypt’ from his Twitter profile.

His profile now simply reads: “Footballer for Liverpool FC.”

He also posted a Tweet which translates as: “Whatever they do to try to change my love for Egypt, they will not succeed.”

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi won the Best Fifa Men’s Player award on Monday night ahead of Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo and Salah’s Liverpool team-mate Virgil van Dijk.

In 2018, Salah came third in the men’s award and also took the Puskas Award for the goal of the season.

Each nation has three voters: the national team coach, the national team captain, and a media representative.

The EFA says that both Gharib and Elmohamady had Salah as their first choices in their votes.

The media representative Hany Danial’s choices were Sadio Mane followed by Cristiano Ronaldo, with Salah in third place.

It is not the first time that Salah has been upset with the EFA, following a row last year over the image rights that saw him threaten to quit the national team.

It was gathered that Ojionu, who is currently undergoing interrogation at the Abuja office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), was alleged to have succeeded in defrauding his victims using a popular online retail site, Amazon.com, where he allegedly sells books.

Sources disclosed that the Imo State-born suspect, designed a payment portal, known as Payoneer, which he linked to his book-selling website on Amazon.com and he steals credits cards details and identities of its owner using his payment portal.

It was gathered further that when Ojionu succeeds in stealing the credit cards details of his victims, he would proceed in buying baby dippers, wipers, wrist watches and other expensive items from another online retail store, Alibaba.com in China and send the purchased items to Ghana, where they would be sold to his waiting buyers.

A source explained that after the items has been sold, Ojionu would travel to Ghana, retrieve his money from his buyers and would send the proceeds to Nigeria through a Bureau de Change operator. The source added that the suspect has succeeded in buying two expensive cars, three mansions in Abuja, Cross Rivers State and his hometown in Imo from proceeds of his scam. It was also learnt that the suspect has a property under construction at Dabo Estate at Life Camp area of Abuja.

Ojionu ran into trouble recently when one of his victims alerted the police and the EFCC about the theft of his credit card details and the subsequent withdrawals from his accounts, running into millions of naira.

The IRT team was drafted to investigate the case and also arrest and hand over the suspect to the EFCC for onward prosecution. It was learnt that Ojionu was trailed to one of his mansions in Abuja and he confessed during his arrest that he was into internet fraud.

“I learned the internet fraud business in 2015 during my NYSC days in Cross Rivers and I bought a house worth N60 million from the deal before I relocated to Abuja, where I bought another house for N65 million. What I do is mainly on Alibaba by trading with hacked credits cards. I buy my goods in China and sell them in Ghana and I bring the proceed to Nigeria where I have invested large portion of it on properties.”

Israel, a.k.a Emzy, aged 21, posing as Emzy Ned Nwoko Jnr, was arrested in Mbiama, Ahoada West Local Government Area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State at his friend’s place after detectives tracked him to the location.

According to sources at the Delta State police command, the fake Nwoko, Emzy, operated a scam Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and emails to hoodwink the public and defraud unsuspecting Nigerians.

Intelligence also revealed that the suspect, a native of Rivers State with no blood ties to Prince Ned Nwoko, had kept physical contacts with several unsuspecting members of the public with dubious promises of securing financial deals and sundry favours for them, with intent to extort.

The suspect was arrested with his sister, Miss Love Israel, for criminal impersonation, conspiracy, defamation of character and conduct likely to threaten public peace.

Delta State police spokesman, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, who confirmed the arrest, said investigation was ongoing in the matter.

Crime / One Stabbed To Death In Itire Cult Clash by quickgetpay: 9:12am On Sep 23, 2019
A suspected cult member, Aliu Lamidi, aged 29, was on Saturday night stabbed to death after rival cult groups clashed at Chukwuma Hotel in Babashola Street, Itire area of Lagos State. The hotel and some vehicles parked around the premises were also set ablaze in the fight that erupted following the killing at about 10:50 p.m.

The Guardian gathered that violence broke out after an altercation between rival cult groups in the hotel, which led to the owner’s son allegedly stabbing Lamidi on the neck. According to a source, the clash started from a drinking joint at Oseni Street before it turned bloody, causing residents to scamper for safety.

Lamidi, a resident of Aboredhade Street, reportedly died at the hospital he was rushed to, a development that provoked his colleagues to stage a reprisal.

Although the immediate cause of the initial altercation was unknown, it was gathered that Aiye and Eiye cult groups, fingered in the cult war, have been embroiled in an age-long rivalry that has claimed many lives across the state.

Angered by Lamidi’s killing, group members of the deceased were said to have torched the hotel and vehicles in the vicinity before moving in droves to the home of the hotel owner in a bid to kill anyone they found.

Wielding cutlasses and other dangerous weapons, the hoodlums threatened firefighters and policemen from Itire police station who responded to the distress calls and arrived at the scene to put out the inferno.

The violence escalated yesterday morning and extended to Oseni Street, which prompted the deployment of reinforcement from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the Area Command led by Deputy Commission of Police (DCP), Tunji Disu. The police reinforcement prevented the cultists from wreaking further havoc as they chased the hoodlums and eventually arrested eight of the culprits.

Confirming the incident, spokesman of the Lagos command, Bala Elkana, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said security has been beefed up in the area. “The situation is now calm and seven suspects have been arrested. Our officers are still holding the ground.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was started by some cult groups that clashed at a drinking joint in the hotel. Trouble started when a hot argument ensued between members of two rival gangs in the joint. The son of the owner of the hotel, who is now at large were said to have stabbed a member of a rival gang identified as Aliu Lamidi on the neck. The victim was rushed to hospital where he eventually died. Three vehicles that were parked by the roadside were also burned,” he said, adding that investigation was ongoing and all the suspects would be charged to court.

Area Commander Area D ACP Aliko Dankoli and the RRS Commander, DCP Tunji Disu were on ground to check the situation.

Crime / Four Abducted ASUP Leaders Regain Freedom In Oyo by quickgetpay: 7:02pm On Sep 22, 2019
Four kidnapped leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) at the Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology (OYSCATECH), Igboora, regained freedom in the late hours of Saturday.

The News Agency of (NAN) reports that Opadijo Oluyide, the ASUP Chairman, his Secretary, Gbenga Alayande, two other officials of the union as well as a female passenger were kidnapped on Thursday night while returning from Saki.

The union leaders had attended a meeting of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of unions in the six Oyo State-owned tertiary institutions at Oke-Ogun Polytechnic in Saki.

The State Police Command in a statement on Sunday by its Public Relations Officer, Mr Olugbenga Fadeyi, said the abductors released the union leaders as a result of the heat from the Force.

“This rescue, personally coordinated by CP Shina Olukolu, consequently yielded results as their captors felt they can no longer have a safe haven to continue to hold on to them since the heat from the Police was becoming unbearable.

“This led to their release in the evening of Saturday, Sept. 21, unhurt and they have since been reunited with their various family members,” the statement said.

It said that Olukolu had relocated his office with all the police tactical teams to the area immediately he got wind of the incidence.

“The release is due largely to the concerted efforts jointly carried out by the Commissioner and the tactical police teams of the command and the Commissioner of Police, F-SARS.

“Others are Ogun State Command SARS, AKS, vigilante, hunters, and other quasi civilian security outfits in the surrounding communities as well as the Obas, chief, and youths of the area,” Fadeyi said in the statement.

The command expressed its appreciation to the Inspector General of Police, Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, traditional and political leaders and others stakeholders for their patience and understanding while the unfortunate ordeal of the victims lasted.

Fadeyi, however, advised members of the public to be wary of the hoodlums in their midst who carry out the dastardly acts while transiting on the highways at anytime of the day.

He drew the attention of the public to the possibility of increase in crime rate often associated with the festive season, especially as the Yuletide season was fast approaching.

The command’s spokesperson reiterated the command’s resolve to continue to rejig the security architecture for maximum protection of lives and property.

He also warned criminal elements to relocate from Oyo State, saying the command was ready to confront any individual or criminal gang bent on disturbing the peace and tranquility enjoyed bythe people of the state.

Fadeyi appealed to the people to continue to support, cooperate, assist and synergise with the police, particularly on the provision of timely credible information to enable it serve the people better.

Nairaland / General / CBN Says No Going Back On Cashless Policy by quickgetpay: 9:42am On Sep 21, 2019
Urges NASS Not To Raise Oil Benchmark In Budget
Commends FG On VAT Increase

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), yesterday, maintained all its key monetary rates, which determine interest rate regime in the country, by retaining the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) at 13.5 per cent, as well as all other parameters around the rate.

This was part of the outcome of its highest policy meeting, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), which ended in Abuja yesterday.

The other retained parameters included the asymmetric corridor of +200/-500 basis points around the MPR, Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) at 22.5 per cent and liquidity ratio at 30 per cent.

The implication of the holding of the rates is that cost of funds remains at their prevailing levels, as a loosening would have reduce the cost and induce more borrowings by entrepreneurs for business expansions or establishment of new ones, all of which are a major catalyst for job creation.

Addressing journalists at the end of the MPC, CBN Governor, who is the Chairman the Committee, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, gave insight into how it arrived at maintaining status quo: “In its considerations regarding the policy options to adopt, the MPC as usual, felt compelled to review the options of whether to tighten, hold or loosen.

“The committee noted the positive moderation in inflation, though slowly from 11.08 per cent in July to 11.02 per cent in August 2019. Given that this was still above the target range of six to nine per cent, and considering the pressure on reserve accretion caused by the relatively weak crude oil price, the MPC felt the imperative to tighten.

“On the contrary, the committee was of the view that doing so in the midst of a fragile growth outlook would increase the cost of credit and further contract investment and constrain output growth.”

He continued: “On loosening, the committee felt that this would result in increased system liquidity; hence heighten inflationary tendencies in the economy, and drive growth in consumer credit, but without a corresponding adjustment in real sector output.

“The committee was also convinced that increased liquidity and interest rate moderation would result in exchange rate pressures as money supply rises.

“As regards the option to hold, the MPC opined that the option requires a clear understanding of the quantum and timing of liquidity injections into the economy before deciding on possible adjustments to the stance of monetary policy.

“The committee was also of the opinion that retaining the current position of policy offers pathways to appraising the effects of the suit of heterodox monetary policy to encourage credit delivery to the real sector, especially in the light of the subsisting implementation of the Loan-to-Deposit Ratio policy.

“In view of the foregoing, the committee decided by a unanimous vote to retain the MPR at 13.5 per cent and to hold all other policy parameters constant.”

Meanwhile, the recent plan to raise the country’s Value Added Tax (VAT) rate by 50 per cent from next year, from five per cent to 7.5 per cent has received the commendation of the apex bank, as it believes it would provide a buffer and reduce government’s borrowings at all level

CBN viewed the increase rate is very minimal, when compared with other countries of the world, adding: “We agree that this maybe painful, but it is important that we understand that government also has an obligation that it must meet, so it must raise revenue. Compare the VAT rate in Nigeria to VAT rate in any part of the world, Nigeria’s VAT rate, even at 7.5%, stands as one-off, if not the lowest in the world.

“I appeal to Nigerians to please try to show understanding. It may seem painful, but again, it is important for us to know that when government spends (because you are looking at the advance consequences it will have on the purchasing power of the person who will spend).

“You should also look at the positive implication on the fact that government raises revenue, debt services ratio is lower, government can meet its obligation to improve roads or provide money for electricity. It will also have positive implication on the GDP and average growth of the country.”

Reacting to calls by a section of the Nigerian stakeholders for the suspension of the cashless policy, as well as its charges reintroduced on deposit and withdrawal of cash, the CBN governor said there was no going back, saying the full implementation of the cashless policy has become more imperative, particularly after the recent FBI disclosure of some Nigerians involved in money laundry activities.

“I truly sympathise with the banking public and regret the inconvenience that this is causing bank customers. But cashless policy in Nigeria is not new; it was first launched in 2012, and several engagements were held with multiple stakeholders before we started this policy in 2012.

“Charges have always been on deposits and withdrawals. Withdrawal charges have been in place. Only deposit charges are new today. It was only suspended in 2014, as it was too early to begin to charge who wanted to deposit money in the banks, because we agreed that there were a lot of cash outside the banking industry and there was no need to penalise people who wanted to bring out money into the banking industry.

“We expect that over five years (2014-2019), all the cash that would have been kept in peoples houses, we should have been able to bring them into the banking industry. That is why we are saying at this time, that we need to return back to that. What you are seeing today is not new.

Nairaland / General / Celine Dion Begs Drake Not To Tattoo Her Face On His Body (video) by quickgetpay: 7:49am On Sep 20, 2019
Drake’s body art is a collection of intricate designs, muses and OVO signs. The latest inspiration that Drake wants to commemorate with ink is singer Céline Dion. But, she’s not a big fan of the idea.

Apparently two years ago, Drake allegedly told Celine Dion at the Billboard Music Awards that he was planning on adding her face to his burgeoning tattoo collection. During an iHeartRadio Canada interview, Dion made a passionate appeal to the rapper in hopes of making sure he avoided what she deemed an unwise decision.

“Please, Drake, I love you very much. Can I tell you something? Don’t do that,” Dion said. “You can write me love letters. You can send me autographs for my kids. You can come and visit. I can have you home for lunch or dinner. We can go for a drink. We can sing together. Whatever you want to do. I can talk to your mother. Whatever you want, but please.”

Dion continued to buttress her point by stating how her tattooed face will likely not age well as Drake grows older.

“This is not the money maker over here, first of all,” she continued. “The thing I want to say to you, all of us here, we’re going forward in life. I’ve always been very thin. As time goes, as you go older, you too when times comes my face will go longer and it will go not prettier. Please don’t tattoo. If you do it, just do a fake one.”

Crime / Xenophobia: Mayor Of Johannesburg Says No Need To Apologise To Nigeria by quickgetpay: 11:56am On Sep 18, 2019
Mayor of Johannesburg Herman Mashaba has said it "was not necessary" for South Africa to apologise to Nigeria for the recent xenophobic attacks.

"No, there is nothing for me to apologise about," Mashaba said on CNBC Africa's Political Capital on Tuesday.

"What do you expect me to really apologise for?"

Nigerians and other foreign nationals were attacked earlier in September by irate mobs of South Africans who blamed them for spiking unemployment and drug-related crime rates.

Many non-South African businesses in and around Johannesburg and Pretoria were also vandalised and looted by the mob.

South African president Cyril Ramaphosa apologised for the violence at the weekend in Zimbabwe.

The violence, which claimed the lives of 12 persons, most of whom were South Africans, caused diplomatic rows between the country and her neighbours and Nigeria.

Nigeria, Rwanda, Congo and Malawi boycotted the World Economic Forum meeting held in Cape Town last week as a result.

Botswana told her citizens “travelling to South Africa to exercise extreme caution in light of recent developments resulting in violent unrests.”

Zambia also called off a planned football friendly with South Africa.

But Mashaba, the mayor of Africa's richest city, is unfazed by the violence although he insisted that he was not xenophobic.

His stance mirrors those of former South African deputy police minister Bongani Mkongi, foreign affairs minister Naledi Pandor and former president Thabo Mbeki.

South Africa has had an alarming increase in crime rates, especially femicide. The South African leaders accused Nigerians of being the ringleaders of drug and prostitution cartels in the country.

“We are not going to turn a blind eye on such evil crime happening under our watch," Mashaba said, adding that "the country [South Africa] also owes an official apology to the 10.2 million unemployed South Africans who are today without jobs as a result of billions of counterfeit goods being brought illegally into the country, killing local manufacturing.”

Possible litigations
Tough talks by South African leaders like Mashaba and Pandor shows that the xenophobic violence was "sponsored or condoned" by the country's authorities, Nigeria's former minister of foreign affairs Professor Bolaji Akinyemi said in a statement on Sunday.

Akinyemi urged Nigeria to drag South Africa before the International Criminal Court.

Although President Muhammadu Buhari told South Africa's special envoy who visited him on Monday that he will work for a closer tie between the two countries, foreign affairs minister Geoffrey Onyeama told The Guardian a day before that Nigeria was weighing her options, including suing South Africa.

“We cannot rule anything out for now," he said.

Discussions about the attacks are expected to come up when Buhari and Ramaphosa meet in South Africa next month.

Temporary fix
As a temporary measure, Nigeria began the evacuation of her citizens willing to leave South Africa. The process is being bankrolled by a private airline Air Peace.

But the evacuation itself has not been without drama.

The chief executive officer of Air Peace Allen Onyema accused South African authorities of denying Air Peace landing to fly returnees out on Tuesday. But Nigeria’s Consul- General in Johannesburg Godwin Adama said the permit was later granted.

Onyema also accused South African officials of claiming that evacuation was not backed by the Nigerian government.

Crime / Body Of 80-year-old Woman Found With Eyes, Private Parts Missing In Taraba State by quickgetpay: 8:56am On Sep 17, 2019
• Kidnappers abduct rescuers of accident victims in Rivers
• Former NAFDAC DG, Orhii, escapes abduction

Resident of Karim-Lamido local government area of Taraba State yesterday woke up to the rude shock of the discovery of an 80-year-old woman found dead with her eyes, breasts, tongue, fingernails and private parts chopped off.

The octogenarian, Hannatu Kefas, who had earlier been declared missing five days ago while on her way to the farm, was gruesomely murdered by suspected ritualists. Her body was found on a farm in neighbouring Kodel village five days after her disappearance.

Saddened by the development, an in-law to the deceased, Khadimoh Sani Ishaku, told The Guardian that Kefas at her age was a peasant farmer who usually left her home to her farm every Tuesdays and return on Saturdays. He wondered why such ill should be meted out at the old woman.

Ishaku said she was murdered close to a bar joint known as forest parliament in Karim Lamido. He described the area as “where some miscreants and gangsters use to perpetuate their hideous crimes at the detriment of the community.”

The Guardian gathered that the said joint forest bar is a commercial centre where beer and some other drinks are sold with a high spate of hooliganism. It was further gathered that this latest incident was the fifth of its kind where innocent persons are not only harassed or intimidated but also robbed sometimes gruesomely murdered.

With tears drooling down his cheeks, Ishaku appealed to the state government to expedite action by taking a punitive measure to arrest and compel the culprits to face the wrath of the law to prevent a future occurrence.

The octogenarian, whom sympathisers said was the breadwinner of the family, is survived by a long list of children and grandchildren, many of whom are students.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), David Misal, said her death could be attributed to natural occurrence as the situation cannot be substantiate owing to days taken for the body to be discovered.

He noted that the police was not informed of the missing woman until she was discovered dead.

Meanwhile, gunmen at the weekend abducted four travelers, who rushed to an accident scene in Elele, Rivers State, to rescue the victims. It was learnt that victims of the accident were persons from Bayelsa State, who were returning from a traditional wedding in Mbaise, Imo State.

They were reportedly traveling in a Toyota Sienna car when the vehicle crashed into another vehicle in a head-on collision. A popular Ijaw youth and social media activist, Prince Elayo Ekete and driver of the Sienna car were said to have died on the spot.

Other travelers from Bayelsa, who witnessed the accident, were said to have rushed to the scene to rescue the victims when kidnappers seized them and took them away.

But another source said the kidnapped victims were abducted after they had successfully rushed other victims of the accident to a hospital. A source, who witnessed the incidents, said the youth community in Bayelsa has been thrown into mourning, wondering why the kidnappers worsened the situation in the state.

The source, who spoke in confidence said: “The wedding was attended by most social media activists from Bayelsa across political party lines. Ekete and seven others were returning from the occasion and they got to Elele when their vehicle had a head-on collision.

“The kidnappers went to the accident scene, recovered personal effects of some of the victims and called one of the rescuers asking him to come to a particular place to collect them. When they got there, the gunmen seized them,” the source narrated.

One of the injured victims of the accident, Dina Adiva, confirmed that some persons, who came to rescue them were kidnapped by unknown gunmen and prayed for their freedom. Adiva, who is recuperating in an unknown hospital, said: “I also pray for those that were kidnapped while trying to make arrangements to move us from Madonna University, Elele to Yenagoa, that they come out unhurt.”

In honour of Ekete, social media activists in Bayelsa have suspended the posting of all political materials on social media for the next 24 hours.

In another development, an attempt to abduct former Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Dr. Paul Orhii, has been foiled by policemen. The incident occurred in the early hours of yesterday in his Makurdi, Benue State home.

Orhii, who narrated the incident on his Facebook page, stated that it took the efforts of police personnel around to ward off the bandits that sneaked into his home at about 1:00 a.m.

He said: “Early this morning (Monday), at precisely 1:05 a.m., four boys armed with pistols and machetes sneaked into my Makurdi home and went straight to the security post in an attempt to disarm my security personnel. During the ensuing struggle, the gallant police officers started shooting, which caused the intruders to run for safety, leaving behind two machetes and a pistol cartridge loaded with six bullets.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that one of my security guards may have been involved as their inside man. He and all the items recovered have been handed over to the police in Makurdi to assist them in their investigation.”

Nairaland / General / Lagos Says Only 700,000 Of 4.8m Registered Taxpayers Remit Taxes by quickgetpay: 10:25am On Sep 15, 2019
• Tasks Residents On Tax, Participatory Governance
Lagos State Government has revealed that of the 4.8m registered taxpayers only about 700,000 are paying. It, therefore, implored residents to perform their civil responsibility of paying taxes, alongside actively participating in the governance process.

The Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr. Samuel Egube stated this at the Year 2020 Budget stakeholders’ meeting for Lagos Central Senatorial district. At the forum were representatives of community and professional associations, traditional rulers and civil societies.

Egube stated that government policies and programmes would not make the needed impact if the citizens and those in government failed to interact and engage.

According to him, it was the reason the state government felt in preparing the 2020 budget for the state, it should go round the three senatorial districts to get inputs of residents in drawing up the state projects and programmes for the budget.

“This forum did not hold for two years but our belief is that we are servants of the people and we get to government through them, reason their opinions and voices must be reflected in the policies of government.”

The Special Adviser, Economic Planning and Budget, Mr. Adebayo Sodade said the 2020 budget is being designed to be people-oriented to ensure a Lagos that works for all, irrespective of age, gender, tribe or status.

Romance / 5 Ways To Deal With Jealousy In Your Relationship by quickgetpay: 1:35pm On Sep 14, 2019
In a relationship, it is natural to feel a little jealous, especially if you have a strong feeling for your partner.

Occasionally, jealousy is okay because it adds a little sparkle and excitement to your relationship but when is extreme you need to be cautious so it won’t destroy your relationship.

According to Helen Fisher, the author of “why we love”, stated that a little amount of jealousy is permitted because it arouses your feeling, you are lucky having an attractive and pretty partner, it makes you more loving and nice to your partner but when it is chronic and debilitating and it becomes a problem.

Below are ways to help you deal with outrageous jealousy:

Trust:

The foundation of your relationship is trust. A relationship without trust is a time bomb about to explode at any time. Your relationship has to be built on trust, to prevent a fight and break up. First, you need to trust yourself before you can trust your partner because if you don’t trust yourself, you will find it difficult to trust your partner and you can’t give what you don’t have.

Set Boundaries:

Your relationship can’t be healthy until you and your partner set boundaries, communicate what you both like and don’t like and you both respect them. Also, don’t forget to discuss what is causing jealousy between you and your partner.

Calmness:

You have to realize that love comes with risk and all rosy relationships have a price. Any time you feel jealous calm down and remember the beautiful days.

Control Your Feeling:

Control every negative feeling you have about your partner and don’t let it build up. Your partner doesn’t belong to you alone; at times they might feel like interacting with someone else which doesn’t mean they are cheating. If you question your partner motive call and discuss it with them.

Besides, the government is earmarking N2.4 billion annually for the implementation of the new education regime.

“The policy is premised on education for all and equal educational opportunity for all children, girl child education for the poor, enrollment of out-of-school children and education opportunity for Tsangaya children,” the governor said.

Ganduje further stressed that “the policy will capture 1,180 public schools with 834,366 pupils at the cost of N200 million monthly and N2.4 billion yearly.

Politics / Atiku, PDP Deserve Prosecution Over Fraudulent Evidence Before Tribunal by quickgetpay: 3:21pm On Sep 12, 2019
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, says the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, deserved to be prosecuted for allegedly presenting fraudulent evidence before the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal.

The minister said this in a statement issued on Thursday in St. Petersburg, Russian Federation, where he is leading Nigerian delegation at the ongoing 23rd General Assembly of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).

The statement signed by Mr Segun Adeyemi, the Special Adviser to the minister, was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.
“Instead of casting aspersion on the judiciary with their poorly-framed reaction to the ruling of the Tribunal, the PDP and its candidate should be thanking their stars that they are not being prosecuted for coming to court with fraudulently-obtained evidence.

“It is intriguing that a party that trumpets the rule of law at every turn will present, in open court, evidence it claimed to have obtained by hacking into a supposed INEC server.
“Don’t they realise this is a criminal act for which they are liable?

“Instead of threatening to head to the Supreme Court, driven more by ego than commonsense, they should be sorry for allowing desperation to overwhelm their sense of reasoning.
“Enough is enough,” the minister who is the Vice President (Africa), UNWTO said.

Mohammed said that Atiku and PDP should apologise to Nigerians for wilfully distracting President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration with a frivolous election petition, instead of appealing the Wednesday’s ruling of the tribunal.

He noted that while the PDP and its candidate reserve the right to pursue their petition to the highest level, “they would be better served by dropping their toga of desperation and realising that there is a limit to tomfoolery.

“Nigerians are tired of this orchestrated distraction, and will rather wish that the opposition, having lost at the polls and in court, will now join hands with the government to move Nigeria to the next level.

“This is more so that the judgement validating the re-election of President Buhari was unanimous that the petition lacked merit, that the petitioners failed to prove any of the grounds upon which their case was anchored and that President Buhari is eminently qualified to contest the poll,” he said.

The minister commended the tribunal for not only doing justice to the case but for explaining, in painstaking details that lasted hours, how it arrived at its judgment.
“We also thank Nigerians, who voted massively to re-elect President Buhari, for their continued support,” he said.
