Literature / Re: Best African Author: Wole Soyinka or Chinua Achebe? by raregroove(m): 11:33pm On Mar 03, 2006 |
diaso: You couldn't have put it any better! If I were to choose between both authors, Chinua would be my choice, bearing in mind i'm not igbo! But that's besides the point, the best African author should be chosen from an exhaustive list, but why would you want to embark on a journey of making such a choice in the first place? Maybe the most influential African author would have been a more appropriate question. We need to stop thinking in a box & learn to discuss sensible issues! |
Music/Radio / Re: The best R'n'B Artistes of all times by raregroove(m): 6:36pm On Feb 10, 2006 |
So IB if understand your topic, you have a hunch that the best r&b artiste(s) of all times may be associated with the 90s? I don't think so. The 90s marked a very poor period in the history of black music, I agree that there were a few artistes of exceptional quality, but in comparison to the quality found in the 80s, 70s, 60s etc, it pales in comparison. Mary J Blige undisputedly was the most influential r&b diva of the 90s. I'm ashamed at what we consider to be r&b today, the so called neo-classic soul (d'angelo, chico debarge, maxwell, erkyah, angie stone, raphael sadiq & co) managed to restore some glory to the shameless output recorded by some of the artistes mentioned above by some fellow bloggers. Albeit this, some of the new jack swingers - Christopher Williams, Jodeci, Guy etc were influential in the early part of that decade. As far as i'm concerned, the best r&b was being churned underground & the soulful stuff of that decade were made by the likes of Peabo, Anita Baker, Luther, James Ingram, Will Downing, Howard Hewett, Phil Perry, Rachelle Ferrell, Regina Belle & artistes of that ilk. If you want to hear the best, i'm afraid you need to move further afield. That's my two cents worth. |

spikelord: Oh yeah? So let's put this into perspective; pop refers to popular music, so irrespective of its genre, music can be deemed to be pop, depending on whether it has a wide appeal. So in simple words, r&b can be pop. |
Music/Radio / Re: Who Is The Father Of Blues? by raregroove(m): 3:38pm On Jan 11, 2006 |
spikelord: That's an unforgiveable error! Pardon me for being so blunt, none of those artistes remotely sing the blues... The father of blues is a contentious one, there are too many artistes worthy of consideration - Blind Lime Jefferson, Elmore James, Howlin Wolf, Big boy crudup, Koko Taylor, Sonny Boy Williamson, Ma Rainey + the artistes nferyn mentions - however some purists do not highly consider BB King as a true blues artiste albeit his popularity. W.C Handy is widely considered as the father of blues. I think it is a great idea for you to be able to discern the sound of the blues, before you begin to ask the question of who is the father/mother of blues... Hope this helps? |

Music/Radio / Re: Who's Listening To Marvin Gaye? by raregroove(m): 4:30pm On Jan 10, 2006 |
Marvin Gaye was one of the very few great musicians (others were Lamont Dozier & Stevie Wonder) on the Motown label; which was mostly plagued by watered-down versions of the soul genre in the 60s, such as that of the Supremes. Marvin made several good albums (such as "What's going on" & "Lets get it on" & it is very hard to single out a particular album. The "I want you" album is worthy of note, here you find Marvin engaging in romantic funk, he was inspired by the great Leon Ware who wrote most of the songs and sacrificed them at the expense of his career at the insistence of Berry Gordy. "Come live with me" & "Since I had you" are both worthy of note, the aforementioned is ladened with naughty innuendoes. If you appreciate this album then explore Leon Ware's seminal album, it will lead you on a refined soulful path... On the Sexual Healing album, the troubled man echoes his home return from Europe to his estranged wife on "My love is waiting", "Turn on some music" has a lot of sexual energy about it. However don't limit yourself to these albums, there are several others that are worth listening to such as "Hear, my dear" - Marvin was undergoing a divorce & the court granted his ex-wife the proceeds of the album. If you want to understand the Great man, steer clear from all those wretched Motown compilations ... |

tiwa: I don't understand what the fuss is all about, we are merely stating the truth as we see it, this is our view, we don't have to alter our view(s) to suit you - I wouldn't start to tolerate stretch marks or bad breath for example, just because you think otherwise. If you were to tell me that you dislike oversize men or men who sport pot bellies, then that is your view & it is one which you are entitled to, who am I to begin to preach to you for an acceptance? Or where you expecting us to say that we had no dislikes? If there are girls that like to sport beards or pot bellies, then that's their prerogative, if they find men who like them that way, then so be it; I certainly won't be fishing from that pond - now that's my view & my prerogative, if I may add! |
Romance / Re: Why Are Nigerian Men Romantically Challenged? by raregroove(m): 8:32pm On Dec 05, 2005 |
Interesting thread! Yes, the majority of Nigerian men can be considered as non-romantics. I'll mention a couple of factors that attribute to this observation. Abject poverty is a significant factor, Nigerian men have picked up on the fact, that Nigerian women do not fall for the "I who have nothing (but love to give)" type of men, unfortunately romance is deemed as having a direct relationship with material wealth. The men have the "if you want heavy sussy, you must to pay for am" mentality. Sad but true. It has not been in our tradition to express unrequited love with poems written by the likes of Blake or Keats, neither with the ambience of a piano recital nor with a flower, dowry used to be commonplace... Unfortunately, there are very few women like yourself, that get tickled by such amorous advances, as mentoned above, if more women begin express their dissatisfaction with the romantic gestures of their men, maybe the men will start to take note... |

donnie: Out of curiosity, were you created by God or were you born of him? or are we speaking parables here? From your message inserted above, you seem to imply that you have a superior relationship with God, may I ask you on what tenet(s) you justify this? What gives you the impression that Ijebuman is ignorant of God's will? When answering please bear in mind that I have not disclosed my religion, as it is rather irrelevant. It would be helpfull if you give an objective answer which is devoid of any sentiment whatsoever. Thanks. |
