"Life is highly unpredictable, this little boy here helps the aunt in her food stuff shop, like every other business woman, she went to the market to buy goods, not knowing that tragedy awaits her yesterday. This little boy, decided to do some rehearsals, trying to find out if truly hanging himself will take his life, behold this little boy died yesterday and our neighbor now police custody. How can this happen? What went wrong? He's well fed and taken care of, what could have pushed him into taking his own life? Oh Kelvin why? I saw him on Saturday playing about. Chai" she wrote.

So 3 days ago as I was scrolling through Facebook, i came across the WHEN FREEDOM FALLS..... post made by my friend Chinedu Hardy Nwadike about one of the projects done by a former Governor "Freedom Falls" signage being in a bad state,
so I decided to do my bit which is repainting and beautification of the FREEDOM FALLS & I.I.C.C Signage at Warehouse Junction in the heart of Owerri capital of Imo State, to support and encourage the Government while we hopefully wait on them to make our State better for us all.
Between Friday and Saturday 21st -22nd of August, 2020,
I contracted and paid my childhood friend who is a painter to help me make this idea become a reality. Thank you so much Slim-sweet John I had to learn how to paint I think I will make a good painter
A massive thanks to my wonderful Brothers
Kelly Smart
Ken Simeon
and
Okafor Henry Ikenna
who assisted me in painting and to Hardy and
Treasured Mercy
thank you all for making this thought a reality.
The whole inspiration and idea behind this project is to see my State look as beautiful as it should be, BUT most importantly to awaken the consciousness of not just the Youths in Imo State but all over the world and the People generally to step out of the entitlement mentality of what the Government should do for us and take a bold step to proffer solution to the problems around us which will ultimately go a long way in creating a driving force on our Leaders to do things aright even the littlest thing that seems not to matter.
Below are pictures of Before, During and After the repainting Project.
I dedicate this project to God who blessed me with this insight and the speed to get into work almost immediately.
I hope my Motherland (Ala Imo) likes and accepts this little input of Mine,

Politics / Reports Of Cold War Between Buhari, Osinbajo Are Mere Gossip- APC Governors by reportnaija(m): 12:08pm On Sep 27, 2019

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governors under the auspices, Progressive Governors Forum, have denied media reports that there is a cold war between President Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

The governors described the reports of a feud between President Buhari and Vice President Osinbajo as ''mere rumour and another scheme of opposition mischief makers''.

Speaking during the inauguration of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) Steering Committee on Media and Communication yesterday September 26th, Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who is also the chairman of the committee, said the alleged face-off in the Presidency was just ‘gossip’.

Speaking through his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, Sanwo-Olu explained that there is no crack in this aministration.

“There is no crack. It is in the realm of gossips. By the time they said that, the Vice Presieent went to Zimbabwe to represent this country. It was the prerogative of the president but he nominated him. Like I said earlier, it is in the realm of gossips because only on Wednesday, the Vice President presided over the Federal Executive Committee (FEC) meeting which is the highest decision making body in the country. So, we don’t listen to rumours. We deal with facts and the fact is that they are working together. So, it is all rumour and don’t take it that serious,” he said

Crime / VIDEO: Kano Father Chains Daughter For Two Years For Rejecting Forced Marriage by reportnaija(m): 11:28am On Sep 27, 2019

Operatives of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP, have arrested a 62-year-old man in Kano State for chaining and locking up 16-year-old daughter, Fatima, for rejecting forced marriage.

According to reports, the suspect Muhammad Ujujud, a resident of Rinji village in Madobi Local Government Area of the state locked up the teenager as punishment for refusing to accept a husband he forced on her.

It was gathered that the man also locked his son Shehu, in separate cells in his house. Unfortunately, the boy died in detention recently.

A member of the community who secretly leaked the story to journalists explained that the man was notorious for meting out corporal punishment on his family and he was dreaded in the village.

According to the locals, Mr Ujudud only rarely fed his captive children with food. “He hardly gave them food to eat. The sleep and defecate in just one point,” said a neighbor who preferred not to be named.

Appearing pale and ill, NAPTIP officials then took Binta to a private hospital in Kano, where she is currently receiving treatments.

In an interview with DAILY NIGERIAN reporter, one of the sons of Mr Ujudud who fled his father’s way of punishment, confirmed that his brother Shehu starved to death in captivity.

He added that his mother died few years ago and his father is now living with their step mother.

The state commandant of NAPTIP, Shehu Umar, who confirmed the arrest and detention, said investigation is currently ongoing.

Sports / Mikel Obi Was Angry With Gernot Rohr For Giving His Position To Alex Iwobi by reportnaija(m): 2:13pm On Sep 26, 2019
Former Chelsea midfielder, John Obi Mikel wanted Everton playmaker, Alex Iwobi dropped from the starting line-up during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nationsand clashed wit Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr during the tournament, it has been revealed.

News outlets were awash with reports that Former Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi had fallen out with Gernot Rohr before the tournament began, leading many to believe the Super Eagles won't go far in the African tournament, but Rohr has now shed light on what really went wrong.

Mikel Obi was angry with Gernot Rohr for giving his position to Alex Iwobi and wanted him removed from stating line-up - BBC Reporter reveals
According to top BBC World Football reporter and NFF member, Osasu Obayiuwana, who had an exclusive chat with Gernot Rohr, Mikel had issues with Alex Iwobi taking his role wondering why he didn't start games for Super Eagles despite his good form for Middlesbrough in the just concluded Championship season, and nearly caused issues at camp.
''After Mikel John Obi's top-grade performance with Middlesborough in the championship, it was thought that he would exhibit the same form during the AFCON2019 . But despite engaging a personal trainer after the season, Mikel’s physical conditioning dropped...' Rohr told Obayiuwana.
This was quite evident in Asaba, during the one-week I spent with the Super Eagles, before they left for Egypt. But he was always going to be a part of the squad because Gernot sees him as integral to it, even when he’s not 100% fit.

The drop in Mikel John Obi's physical conditioning - as seen from the group AFCON2019 games he played - forced Rohr and the staff to take the decision that he wouldn’t have more than a bit-part role during the tournament.

And Mikel John Obi didn’t help himself when he complained about Alex Iwobi in Egypt. He felt the Everton player was cramping his playing space and style, and wanted him dropped. That was something Rohr was never going to accept, which made his selection duties much easier.

With this in mind, Mikel John Obi was slightly unsettled and when the issues of unpaid players bonuses came up, its easy to know where his mind was - even if justifiably so. The management of his mood was a tournament issue for the technical staff.

''He served the Super Eagles very well, for many years. It was very important that he finished his career with Nigeria in a good way. I have nothing for respect for him and how we worked together.''

But despite all of this Gernot Rohr still had words of praise for Mikel, saying it's normal for issues to come up between players and coaches.

''Yes, there were some difficult moments with Mikel during the tournament.' Rohr said to Obiayuwana.

''But it’s normal for players and coaches to have these things. That’s why I’m the manager. I have to manage.''

Mikel, Nigeria's most decorated footballer of all time, announced his retirement from international football following Nigeria's third-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations this summer.

Politics / Nigerian Man Narrates How He Almost Lost Daughter Practicing What She Saw On TV by reportnaija(m): 11:05am On Sep 14, 2019

A Nigerian father took to Facebook to warn parents against some TV shows they allow their kids watch as he narrated he almost lost his little daughter over same issue.

According to Isaac Jideofor, his daughter who wanted to practice what she watches on the TV every night with her mother almost hanged herself before his son came to her rescue.

He wrote;

Be careful of what you allow your children to watch on TV.
All this action movies and love films, etc should be kept away from kids.

I have been warning my wife about what she is watching with my children on TV but she won't listen. I don't care about your view on this post but learn the lesson...don't be responsible for your children harm. This message is mainly for ladies.

We almost lost my first daughter today because she wanted to practice what they are watching on TV with their mother every night...she took rope, climbed the gate and tied it there and put her head and was playing on something she climbed but unfortunately her legs slipped off and the rope almost strangled her before my son came to her rescue.

Join me to appreciate God, but parents be careful of what you are exposing your children to.

Politics / Buhari Has Divided Nigeria – Odinkalu, Former Human Rights Commission Boss by reportnaija(m): 4:52pm On Apr 14, 2018

Former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu has lambasted President Muhammadu Buhari for deeply dividing the country.

Odinkalu said since Buhari assumed power, he had not achieved anything but was playing politics of divide and rule.

The elder statesman said President Buhari’s actions and inactions had fuelled divisiveness, prejudices and subversion of the basic precepts of coexistence.

He told The Sun, “The country is deeply divided as it is now and I think the reasons are due partly to the actions and inactions of President Buhari. I am not the oldest Nigerian alive but in my limited lifetime I have never seen Nigeria this deeply divided and I think many of the issues have to do with this incumbent President.”

He also noted that the president had failed to deliver on the cardinal promises he made in 2015, noting that he was incapable of changing anything.

“There were certain promises that Buhari made to Nigerians when he was campaigning that made him appear credible. One of them is that he is going to fight corruption. The fight against corruption by the Buhari government has been very partisan; and has failed to carry people along.

“There are whole lots of graft around him that he hasn’t addressed, so he is leading a party with most of its leadership coming from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),” he said

Culture / Yoruba Traditional Rulers Are United – Ooni by reportnaija(m): 7:07pm On Apr 13, 2018
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi has debunked allegations of a rift between himself and the Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi saying Yoruba traditional rulers are united and that unity will continue to reign.

The monarch said this on Thursday while presiding over the Osun State Traditional Rulers Council held at his palace in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

The meeting had 75 Yoruba traditional rulers in attendance.

“What we have inherited from our forefathers must stay and unity will continue to reign in Yorubaland.

“We call this meeting to ensure that our cultural heritage is intact. Nothing can take away our heritage from us. I am here with my brother king (Oluwo of Iwo). We know him as Oluwo of Iwo; we don’t want to listen to rumours.

“South Western Nigeria is a mirror for Nigeria. We have a strong heritage, culture and tradition. Religion is not the basis of our coexistence in South Western Nigeria,” Ooni said.

Ooni, while addressing the traditional rulers emphasised the importance of unity and peaceful coexistence among traditional rulers and the importance of coordinating themselves in royal manners.

Also at the meeting, the Oluwo noted that the Ooni is the father of all Obas, and stressed that Ife remains the source of all kings.

Politics / Sen. Stella Oduah Reveals What Boko Haram Understands More Than Nigerians by reportnaija(m): 6:58pm On Apr 13, 2018

At the fourth anniversary of the abduction of Chibok schoolgirls, the senator representing Anambra North, Stella Oduah has pointed out that what Boko Haram terrorists understand which Nigerians do not is the power of educated girls.

Speaking also against the backdrop of the kidnap and release of some of the Dapchi schoolgirls, the former Aviation minister lamented that while the Nigerian forces are winning the war on ground, the terrorists appear to be prevailing in terms of ideology.

Recalling that the terrorists upon releasing their victims told anxious parents: “Don’t ever put your daughters in school again”, the lawmaker pointed out that the terrorists are clearly threatened by the power of educated girls and is out to destroy them.

She stated this in an opinion piece entitled: ‘Boko Haram understands what most of us don’t. The power of educated girls’ sent to DAILY POST on Friday, which reads in full…

Four years have passed since 14th April 2014 when 276 girls were abducted in a girl’s secondary school in Chibok, Borno state in the northeast of Nigeria by the Boko Haram Terrorist group. The outpouring of emotions was unlike anything I have experienced in my lifetime.

Fast forward to 19th February 2018, about 110 schoolgirls were abducted in the Government Girls Science Technical College in Dapchi, a small community in Yobe state, by a faction of the terrorist group. Most of the girls secured their freedom after a series of back-channel negotiations between the sect and the Nigerian government. While image-makers of the President Muhammadu Buhari led government cheered, and declared victory, I was filled with mixed feelings.

I was delighted in part as mother to see the girls reunited with their parents, but saddened on the other as a Nigerian catholic christian as reports got in that Leah Sharibu, one of the abducted girls remained a captive due to her defiance to the instruction by the terrorists that she renounce her faith.

As as a public official, I am afraid to say that while we continue to make progress on the territorial front, Boko Haram appears to be winning on their own ideological turf. The girls were returned but not without a warning: “Don’t ever put your daughters in school again.”

A news magazine interview with some parents and students of the school in Dapchi confirmed my fears. One of the girls interviewed, Rakiya Adamu, vowed never to return to school. She was not among one of the abducted school kids. Abdullahi Kawi, a father of one of the girls wants his daughter to go back to school but under conditions that security must be provided in the schools.

Many expert observers of the Dapchi abduction find parallels with the tragedy that befell the Chibok schoolgirls about four years ago. Boko Haram is clearly threatened by the power of educated girls and seeks to destroy them. But the biggest difference this time, is that the sect has stealthily evolved from the dark, evil terrorist group that they really are, into a faux reasonable group with some grievances. They received heroes welcome as they returned these girls to the community while government officials were stoned during an earlier assessment visit.
Nigeria’s President, Mr. Buhari appears to have fallen for this charm offensive by the group. He offered amnesty — a move that I am totally opposed to — and which I believe, resonates with most people in my country and most especially my constituency.
Boko Haram is more of an ideological group that is opposed to education and civilisation than an expansionist group seeking to control territory. Winning for them would mean that our women and girls do not receive education. Winning for them would mean that our girls get married and pregnant early.
Implications and Prospects
Nigeria has about 10.5 million out-of-school children, making our country the world’s worst afflicted with 60% of these being girls.
The larger fraction is concentrated in the Northeast of Nigeria where the Boko Haram devastation has led to the destruction and shutdown of educational facilities. The situation is worse than imagined.
We have no other choice — our schools must be secure or we would see more people stay out of schools even where they are available.
But the reality is that the current capabilities of the Nigerian security apparatus will not do. The Nigerian Police Force is acutely understaffed while the military has maintained that the same circumstances would make it almost impossible for it to secure all the schools in the region.
The $100m safe schools initiative championed by former British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown in partnership with the Nigerian government under the administration of my boss, the former President Goodluck Jonathan seems to have stalled under this current administration. Donors including the Nigerian government contributed about $20m towards this project but the status is now difficult to track.
This is why I am presently consulting with my colleagues at the Nigerian Senate to proffer a legislative solution to the issue of school safety. A number of proposals that I am considering include the creation of a Safe Schools Guard. This would not be another agency of government. The proposal would seek to grant legal backing for security agencies to provide some form of military training to community vigilantes who would get commissioned into the guard. This could help to provide the much needed security for our schools without putting a drain on public expenditure.
The return on investment on girl child education is immense. Once women are educated, they are more economically empowered to invest in their families and dislodge poverty, which has become the biggest lever for Boko Haram recruitment in the region. A global study showed that educating girls will reduce child marriage by about 64% in sub-Saharan Africa.
This is why the government of Nigeria and her international partners must by all means ensure that every available resource is deployed to make sure our girls can be safe in schools. Even Boko Haram understands the power of an uneducated female child. What are we waiting for?

Politics / Shehu Sani Alleges Plot To Frame Him For Murder by reportnaija(m): 6:10pm On Apr 12, 2018

Shehu Sani, the senator representing Kaduna central in the national assembly, says there is a plan to frame him for murder by his political opponents in the state.

TheCable has seen a copy of a letter addressed to him by Kaduna commissioner of police inviting him for questioning over “criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide”.

The case was transferred to the police by one division of the Nigerian army in Kaduna.

Also sent to the police by the army is an audio CD in which Shehu’s name was mentioned by the principal suspect, Austin Iwar, the police commissioner, said.

He was asked to report to the office of the commissioner of police in Kaduna on April 30, 2018 at 10am.

The letter, with ref. no. CR: 2000/KDS/VOL 5H/72, was routed through the clerk of the national assembly, while the senate president was also copied.

When contacted by TheCable, Sani pointed accusing fingers at the Kaduna government with which he has been having a running battle.

“They want to frame me the same way they frame Senator Dino Melaye in Kogi on allegation of arming thugs,” he said.

Sani said he had not seen the letter.

Samuel Aruwan, spokesman of Nasir, el-Rufai, governor of the state, was not available for comment as he neither answered his calls nor replied the text message sent.

Mukhtar Aliyu, spokesman of the Kaduna state police command, did not also respond to calls and text message.

Politics / I’m In Ekiti Guber Race To Chase Out Charlatans – Fayemi Writes Tinubu & Oyegun by reportnaija(m): 6:01pm On Apr 12, 2018

The immediate past governor of Ekiti state, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has stated that he is throwing his hat into the ring for the July 14 governorship election in Ekiti state because “public office is too serious to be left to charlatans”.

He stated this in a letter personally signed by him and addressed to the national and state leadership of the All Progressives Party, APC, elders of the party, prominent citizens and traditional rulers in the state, notifying them of his intention to run for the state’s governorship position.

Some prominent names to which the letters were addressed include: national chairman of APC, Chief John Oyegun, National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, APC former Interim national chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, all traditional rulers in Ekiti state, members of the Federal Executive Council, FEC, former and serving governors elected on APC platform, as well as prominent sons and daughters of Ekiti.

Recall that Fayemi, who is presently the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, had on April 2 hinted on his plan to run for the party’s ticket during the quarterly meeting of the Ekiti APC leaders at his Isan Ekiti country home.

A statement issued on Thursday by the minister’s media aide, Yinka Oyebode, reads in part, “Public office is too serious to be left to charlatans and when men and women of good conscience that are committed to the ideals of social justice and the common good turn away from politics, we pave way for unprincipled opportunists to take power.

“My convictions about how much more is possible in Ekiti stem not from any sense of entitlement but from a sense of service, of obligation and from my belief that posterity has positioned us for such a time as this.

“There is much that we have to repair and redress in Ekiti before we can go forward,” Fayemi said.

The house of representatives committee on emergency and disaster management has summoned Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo over the “illegal” suspension of directors at the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

The directors are said to have been suspended by the agency’s governing council — chaired by Osinbajo — without due process.

Also summoned are Ibrahim Magu, acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) — investigating the directors and Oyo-Ita, head of civil service.

The trio were asked to explain their role in the alleged illegal suspension of the directors.

Celebrities / Eucharia Anunobi: I Pray For A Partner, I'm Still Open To Love But At God’s Time by reportnaija(m): 3:30pm On Apr 12, 2018

No doubt that the death of the only child of ace actress, Eucharia Anunobi took a toll on her but despite all she has been through, she still wears a smile and hopes to find love again.

In a chat with Saturday Beats, the actress while trying to hold back tears explained how she has been coping without her son who she always referred to as her best friend. She said, “I do not know how I have been coping but I wake up and tell God that I know he has been keeping me. If I want to begin to think about how I have been holding up, I don’t think I would be able to say anything. God has said that we should not walk by sight but by faith so I am not looking at the event that surrounds me or had surrounded me. If I begin to look at them or think about them, like Peter in the Bible, I would begin to sink as I walk on water. So I do not want to think about the events around me, I just know that God is the author of everything and he is the one that I look up to. I know that he knows all about the pain I am going through.”

She told Saturday Beats that when her son died, for a split second, her faith was shaken but God spoke to her in the midst of her sadness. “If I say that it was not the plan of the devil to shake my faith, then I would be lying. I know that being a healing minister and an apostle, it was all a plan of the devil to test me. I would say for a split second while I held my son who died in my hands, I asked, ‘where is God?’ at that moment but in less than two seconds, he answered me and said that in the midst of the storm, I am here, don’t worry. I always tell people that the amount of God that you swallow before the day of adversity is what keeps you during the adversity because surely the adversity would come. I guess if people say I am standing strong, I give God the glory.”

Despite all she has been through, the actress said that she believes there is always light at the end of the tunnel as she says she is still open to love. “To keep myself happy I read the work of God. I pray and I am also schooling. I am involved in a lot of work, I am very busy. I am open to love but at the right time. God who is the author and finisher of my faith has great plans for me. Why not? I am open to love. There is no one who has been created and would say that they do not want a partner, so why not? I pray for a partner and I know my partner would come at God’s appointed time. Why not, I am open. I love reading and cooking; I also love cleaning and washing. I love driving as well despite the Lagos traffic. I love taking care of people and giving out things,” Anunobi said.

When asked how she would feel if she gets pregnant again, she laughed and simply said, “You are going too far with your questions but if my partner comes and I get pregnant again, we would give glory to God.”

Politics / Fashola Commissions Mobile Power Transformers In Abia by reportnaija(m): 10:40am On Apr 10, 2018

The Federal government on Monday, said the transmission capacities of Umuahia and Aba transmission sub-stations have been upgraded to boost power supply in Abia and environs.

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, SAN, said this at the inauguration of the 40MVA 132/33KVA mobile power transformer at Umuahia transmission sub-station.

Fashola said the move was part of the Federal Government’s commitment to boosting the socio-economic growth of the country.

He said the growing population and consequent demand for more power supply made it pertinent to increase the volume of power supplied through the sub-stations in Abia.

Fashola noted that increasing the capacity of Umuahia sub-station would improve electricity supply to Umuahia metropolis and its environs as well as some parts of Imo.

His words: “It is no longer news that our power generation has risen to 7000 MW but the distribution capacity still lags 2000 MW behind. That means we need to expand distribution and transmission support system.”

The minister said the new mobile power transformer installed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) would increase the capacity of the Umuahia transmission sub-station from 80MVA to 120MVA.

According to him, the commissioning of the 60MVA 132/33KVA power transformer in Aba transmission sub-station would also increase the sub-station’s capacity from 147.5MVA to 227.5MVA.

Fashiola said he was in Abia to discover, first hand, the local problems encountered in power supply and to develop solutions.

“Our purpose is to hold the annual monthly meeting with stakeholders to deepen our service to Nigerians with respect to accessing adequate power supply.

“It is also to familiarise ourselves with the power installations and assets that generate, transmit and distribute power in the state,” he said.

In his remarks, Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia commended the Federal Government for boosting power supply in Abia.

Ikpeazu said that the actualisation of the socio-economic development of the state and nation at large required a well structured power distribution system.

TV/Movies / IMSU VC, Adaobi Obasi On BBNaija: "Nina Will Undergo Moral Rehabilitation" by reportnaija(m): 12:50pm On Apr 06, 2018

Vice-Chancellor of IMSU, Prof Adaobi Obasi says Big Brother Housemate, Nina will undergo Moral Rehabilitation upon return from BBnaija House.

This is to purge her from any bad influences she might have picked up while featuring on the BBN show.

Vice Chancellor of the institution reportedly told some Owerri based journalists that the measure is to forestall and foreclose any of the bad influences being transmitted on other students of the university where Nina is currently a student.
She said:

“As we have a lot to do, you too have a lot to do. One of my students is now in Big Brother Naija. It is not the type of thing I am saying because I don’t see the need. I am talking of something positive; something that will help. We are praying, I told some people that this lady, whatever influence that she has, does not affect my other students here, my daughters here.

“We give something that will yield something. I never know what that BBN, the morals it is teaching. Maybe I am the only one out there. I don’t know what it is teaching us. Is it to have sex in the public? So, this is my own opinion and I hold onto it. Can you imagine my student telling them that she will sort us out here. We are waiting for her to come and sort us out”

“Didn’t you listen to her, that she would sort us out. When she finishes, let her come home and sort us out. If this girl comes back, I will watch her and make sure she has dropped those influences. I know I sent out some girls to America for leadership training. I allowed them upon return to teach others. This is the type of thing I want us to do. I will watch her and I will make sure she has dropped that influence”

“We have never had hostels, but those hostels are ready now. I am taking the first year girls to the hostels because I can say they are intact. We can work from anywhere to do something. I have a passion for IMSU. If I leave it where I found it, generations will be against me”.

Mrs Obasi stated

Politics / Fayose’s Ex-deputy, Raji-rasaki, Bejide Decamp To SDP by reportnaija(m): 8:40am On Apr 03, 2018

A former deputy to Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, Mr. Bisi Omoyeni; a senator representing Ekiti Central, Mrs. Fatima Raji-Rasaki, and a former Secretary to the Ekiti State Government, Dare Bejide, have defected to the Social Democratic Party.

They joined the SDP from the Peoples Democratic Party over Fayose’s imposition of his deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, as the anointed candidate of the party for the July 14 governorship election in the state.

They attended the stakeholders’ meeting of the SDP on Monday in Ado Ekiti.

While Omoyeni, a former Managing Director of Wema Bank attended in person, the former Nigerian High Commissioner to Canada, Bejide and Raji-Rasaki, were represented by Mr. Yemi Arokodare and Chief Titi Oluwatuyi, respectively.

Omoyeni told the stakeholders not to fear because nobody could intimidate them.

“This party was established by divine creation and it has become the third force. Be rest assured that our people are coming en masse to this party. Any support the party need to occupy Oke Ayoba (government house) we will render it.

“Most of the aspirants who are still slugging it out in other parties are coming here. In fact, 70 per cent of the members of the PDP in Ekiti are moving to the SDP,” he said.

Speaking with reporters after the meeting, the SDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Yemi Akinbode, who led other National Working Committee members of the SDP to the meeting, said it was called because of the Ekiti election which he said was strategic to the party.

“This is the first meeting after the inauguration of the interim state working committee of the SDP, because the election is fast approaching and we have little or no time on our hands. The leadership of the party at the national level mandated me and others including Prof. Tunde Adeniran to come to Ekiti State to quickly put together the stakeholders’ meeting to explain to them the vision, programmes as well as the structure of the party and our expectation in the coming governorship election in Ekiti.

“You can see that this is the first meeting and the attendance was good. People are already coming out who ordinarily will not have shown their faces. This is an indication that this is the party to beat.

“It is instructive that those sending representatives are already here. Bisi Omoyeni is here by himself. That is to show that he is here with us.

“Ambassador Dare Bejide and Arokodare are here and that is to show that more people are still coming and that is an indication that the house that is divided against itself can’t stand and that is to show that the PDP is in trouble.

“Our doors are still open to members from other parties who are willing to join the moving train. Our goal and objective is to win the governorship election in Ekiti come July 14,” he said.

The SDP, however, constituted six standing committees for the purpose of galvanising support for the party ahead of the July 14 election.

They are the contact and mobilisation, youth, women, communication and strategy, result and funding and the elders committees.

Politics / Buhari Mourns As Mandela’s Ex-wife, Winnie, Dies At 81 by reportnaija(m): 8:28am On Apr 03, 2018

The ex-wife of the late Nelson Mandela of South Africa, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, is dead.

In a statement released on Monday by her family, she “died after a long illness, for which she had been in and out of hospital since the start of the year. She succumbed peacefully in the early hours of Monday afternoon surrounded by her family and loved ones.”

The statement remembered her as “one of the greatest icons of the struggle against apartheid. She fought valiantly against the apartheid state and sacrificed her life for the freedom of the country.”

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, another icon of the anti-apartheid movement, released a statement on Monday lauding Madikizela-Mandela and wishing that she might “rest in peace and rise in glory.”

“She refused to be bowed by the imprisonment of her husband, the perpetual harassment of her family by security forces, detentions, bannings and banishment. Her courageous defiance was deeply inspirational to me, and to generations of activists,” Tutu said in the statement.

To her supporters, Madikizela-Mandela was known as “the Mother of the Nation,” and her legacy will endure for many years in spite of criminal convictions on charges ranging from fraud to kidnapping and assault after the end of white rule in South Africa.

She became a member of South Africa’s parliament but the scandals saw her sharply criticised by the African National Congress, which leads the country and which her late ex-husband led for years after his release from prison.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday described Madikizela-Mandela’s death as a huge loss to Africa.

He said with her death, the continent had lost a courageous woman.

The President stated this in a statement made available to journalists by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.

He noted that the deceased “was a woman of uncommon determination, steadfastness and perseverance who held aloft the torch of the struggle against institutionalised discrimination even while her ex-husband, the late Madiba, President Nelson Mandela, was incarcerated.”

Buhari, on behalf of the government and Nigerians, commiserated with the family of the deceased as well as the government and people of South Africa.

He urged them to be consoled by the knowledge that the late Winnie Mandela’s contributions to ending apartheid would not be forgotten.

According to him, she remained “a pride not only to the African woman, but indeed all Africans.”

She was a political force and contentious figure in her own right — an iconic figure in the fight to end the racist apartheid system imposed on South Africa under white rule, CBS reports.

Madikizela-Mandela was married to Nelson Mandela in 1958 but divorced him in 1996. Mandela was imprisoned throughout most of their marriage at the Robben Island, and Madikizela-Mandela’s own activism against the apartheid regime led to her being imprisoned for months and years under house arrest.
