Details of acceptance criteria for the PHR, SPHR and GPHR exams are available on the Human Resources certification Institute website www.hrci.org. For materials to prepare, I posted the details below a while back, 1. SHRM Learning System; a set of six text books and a CD/webcasts available form SHRM. Check www2.shrm.org/learning/. 2. Human Resource Certification Preparation Program; also a set of 6 textbooks available from www.hrcp.com. 3. PHR/SPHR: Professional in Human Resources Certification Study Guide by Anne Bogardus published by Sybex. 1 Like |

@annybank90. This is a word of advice to you, and maybe to others in this category. First is to say that a career in HR is quite possible for a Biochemistry graduate, or any graduate out there. The situation in Nigeria has always been that you do whatever you get in the market irrespective of the course you studied (Medical doctors are in banks, and the most skilled Computer experts do not neccessarily have degrees in Computer Science). I also read Biochemistry, but have been in HR for the past ten years. I suspect that your switch to HR may be because of the paucity of jobs for Biochemists, which is not wrong in itself, but you need to understand what your passions are by doing whatever comes your way right now, rather than picking a field without experiencing it. HR in this century is a highly technical field that requires specialist skills, and is not at all an escape route. You need to look out for whatever opportunity is out there to sustain yourself, including teaching or organising lessons or trading, and you can certify your way to your dreams by whatever you get from there. Who knows, you just may be the next Bill Gates if you opt for IT Certifications. I was into so many thing for over five years after graduation; customer service, shirt sales, computer cloning, until my job evolved into an HR role and I had enough money to do my Master degree. There are also certifications available in HR that are cheaper than an MBA, including the Nigerian CIPMN, the British CIPD, and the American PHR, GPHR, CBP. In my opinion, only about 10% of graduate actually break early into their desired field. For the rest of us, the trick is to commit to excellence in doing whatever life offers you, and your gifts will bring you to your place. I wish you all the best. 2 Likes |

cheexy: There is a really good site I found quite helpful while preparing for the PMP exam; www.pmhub.net. It catalogues a list of lesson leaned by candidates preparing for the exam, and archives exam preparation strategies for the PMP, the PgMP and the CAPM. Strange you mentioned that the PMI site doesn't work. It does work; www.pmi.org |

Taiwobayo: I dont believe there is currently any tutorial running in-country for the PHR certification, but there are quite a number of resources available that you can use to prepare. I have listed the most popular below; 1. SHRM Learning System; a set of six text books and a CD/webcasts available form shrm. Check www2.shrm.org/learning/. 2. Human Resource Certification Preparation Program; also a set of 6 textbooks available from www.hrcp.com. 3. PHR/SPHR: Professional in Human Resources Certification Study Guide by Anne Bogardus published by Sybex. I used the HRCP study text in 2006 when I sat for the exam, but i hear the others are equally good Registration for the exam is done through SHRM Certification arm, the HR Certification Institute. The website is www.hrci.org. The exam is conducted twice yearly within two "window". the next exam window is between May 1 to June 30, 2009; you must have made payment by March 13 for regular fees or April 17 (with a late fee of $50.00) to sit for the exam. The second window is between Dec 1 2009 to Jan 31, 2010. Hope this helps. |
