Music/Radio / Album Review: Reminisce Pushes Into New Territory With “vibes And Insha Allah” by RoughDiamond9(m): 4:39pm On Aug 05, 2020

Album Review by Naijagig

Right from his first album, “Book Of Rap Stories” which was released on 31st March, 2012, Reminisce carved a niche for himself by rapping in English and his mother tongue Yoruba. This earned him a solid place in the Indigenous Rap music sub-genre. In ‘Kako Bii Chicken,’ a commercial song which is recognized as the breakout single of the album, Reminisce announced that he has localized his rap music: “Oh ye rappers, I’ve moved on to greater things. I will see you in a jiffy” and “B*tch I’m learned, but local lon gbowo.”

Those lines explain everything about his music thematically, lyrically and sonically. Reminisce realized the need to make music that will appeal to the street and redefined his music. He created music that appeal to the aforementioned audience. At this point, stardom beckoned and he was ready. In addition, the album set out the path to what will be a lengthy and successful music career.

In 2014 the Time Magazine named Reminisce as “one of seven world rappers you should meet.” After the success of his sophomore album, “ALAGA IBILE,” the name ‘Reminisce’ became a brand and to that brand came a signature sound – hip-hop of the street, by the street and for the street. The title of that album ‘Alaga Ibile,’ which means ‘king of the street’ explains everything about his music and style.
Learning Music Business

The last time Reminisce released an album was in 2016, his fourth studio album titled “El-Hadj.” It came as a follow up to his previous successful third album titled “Baba Hafusa,” a ‘genre-busting album’ that broke barriers and charted unknown territories.

Consequently, the success of his albums depended majorly on the fusion of sounds to form a unique blend of Hip-hop, Fuji and Afrobeats with lyrics that everyone can relate to, all perfectly crafted by the rapper.

Reminisce, who has been trying to evolve in a ruthless and dynamic industry, took a break from music. He started studying the industry closely in order to better position himself as an A-list artist in the fast-changing industry.

As a result, he did not release music for 18 months, so he used that time to get closer to his children and study music streaming. Reminisce first experimented streaming with ‘Ponmile’ (released in 2017) which was a very successful record...

Nairaland / General / The 21st Century Youth And The Use Of Social Media by RoughDiamond9(m): 12:13pm On Jul 12, 2020

The new millennium brought a lot of changes along with it. The tech industry grew with new entrants, a new set of social networking platforms such as Myspace (2003), Digg (2004), Hi5 (2003), Facebook (2004) and Twitter (2006).

Before these platforms, there were Craigslist (1995), Netflix (1997), eBay (1995) and Yahoo (1994).

These platforms in the 90s provided a common ground for business owners/entrepreneurs to meet with prospective clients and business associates. In the earliest time of their creation, Facebook and Twitter were viable tools of business, communication and information.

Facebook was the platform that reconnected longs lost friends. Business and romantic relationships were built on the platform. A lot of young single people met their life partners on the Facebook platform.

As with everything that has merits, there are also demerits. Cases of fraudulent activities such as impersonation, identity theft, romance scam, money laundering, etc were rampantly reported to have happened on Facebook.

Fast forward to the late 2000s, social media users created movements and cultures some of which have shaped the reasoning of the average person using one or more of the social media platforms.

- The Cancel Culture

First among them is the Cancel Culture. It is a form of boycott of an individual, usually a popular figure, who has acted or spoke in a questionable or controversial manner. The cancel culture is usually carried out across all social media platforms. However, it has gained momentum most especially on Twitter. While it is effective in naming and shaming popular figures and celebrities who may have acted unruly without a thought of the consequences of their actions simply because of their celebrity status, it has also been known to be weaponized to bring down good and honest celebrities and popular figures by people who detest them.

One of such instances is that of Brazilian football player, Neymar Jnr. who was falsely accused of rape by a female friend who he had once been intimate with. He was quickly cancelled by so many social media users who believed the woman’s allegations. He lost endorsement deals as a result of the plenty petitions signed by social media users to strip him of the endorsement deals and had to rebuff the accusations by playing screenshots of his WhatsApp conversations with the woman to clear his name. That moment would remain one of the darkest moments in his life and career. He almost lost everything he had due to a false accusation and Cancel Culture.

- The Fake Life Culture

There is also the Fake Life Culture. With its origin from Instagram, the fake life culture has found its way to Twitter. The culture is about taking pictures in expensive clothing and jewelry, in expensive cars and exotic locations such as restaurants, nightclubs, hotels and holiday destinations and posting them online. These kinds of posts are usually captioned with motivational quotes. There are funny instances where airline passengers who originally booked economy class tickets would go aboard the airplane and take pictures in the first class section of the airplane, posting those pictures online under the guise of being a first class passenger. The fake life culture on social media has pushed a lot of young people into depression. In a society where money and material things are worshipped and are regarded the most important things in life. Many young people have gotten into crimes that have gone on to have devastating consequences for them and their families, all these as a result of the fake life culture. Some of the people who are usually ambassadors of the culture are called influencers and usually have a large following online.

- The GiveAway culture

There’s the GiveAway culture. Giveaway in layman’s terms is rewarding fans and followers of a particular celebrity or influencer with gifts, which can be cash or merchandise being marketed by the celebrity. It used to be a means of marketing for a particular product or show of appreciation to followers, but has now been hijacked by unscrupulous people who have used it to gather a huge following and create an online mob who do not hesitate to attack anyone who has a contrary opinion to that of their favourite celebrity.

- The Thirst Trap culture

There’s the Thirst Trap culture. A thirst Trap is described as a posting on social media that is intended to attract attention, often times with a sexual connotation. The term emerged on Twitter in 2011, around the same time as the rise of Snapchat, Instagram and dating apps such as Tinder. While we cannot tell people what to do with their bodies, the thirst Trap culture has had a lot of negative effects on young women. They usually feel less confident about themselves and their bodies after seeing pictures of other women online, who mostly modify their looks with the aid of in-app filters, editing plugins, high-end camera phones and good shooting angles.

Some of these women also go to extreme lengths to look good for the gram by going through dangerous body augmentation procedures which can sometimes have adverse long term effects. Sometimes this year, popular Twitter influencer Omotola Taiwo, popularly known as Omothee or Jesus Baby, called out celebrity cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Anu Adepoju of Med Contour for putting her life in danger during a liposuction procedures and she has to endure severe pains after the surgery was done.

- The Starboy FC

Getting an honorary mention is the Starboy FC. This is a group of social media users loyal to Nigerian music superstar, Ayodeji Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid. The Starboy FC is like a cult with Wizkid as its unofficial supreme leader. These set of people believe that Wizkid can do no wrong and would go to extreme lengths to protect him. They bully, threaten and cancel anyone who has a contrary opinion on Wizkid’s ability as a great music maker. To them, Wizkid is greater than Michael Jackson.

Social media is a great place to learn, create, succeed, thrive and add value. I have made a lot of great friends and business partners across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

As youths, we must learn that through our usage of these social media platforms, we leave digital footprints which can be traced and used against us in the future when we become responsible elders. The generation before the creation of the internet could afford to be stupid and get away with their stupidity because there were no Android phones, nobody was taking pictures of them to send to gossip blogs. A lot of these people became governors, heads of service, presidents and royal leaders.

This generation does not have the luxury of being stupid and getting away with it. Please think twice before you post that picture, tweet that abusive words or come up with false allegations.

The internet never forgets. Stay safe, protect yourself. COVID-19 is real.

Music/Radio / Stop Misleading The Public For Personal Gains, D’banj Tells Fake Activists by RoughDiamond9(m): 5:00pm On Jul 04, 2020

Nigerian Afropop singer D’banj, while reacting to a statement released by Nigerian activist, Segun Awosanya, popularly known as Segalink concerning his rape case with Seyitan Babtayo, condemned some so-called feminists activists who take advatange of situations to mislead the public and push their own selfish interests.

Segalink had released a lengthy statement via his Twitter page, to praise activists Kiki Mordi, Chioma Chuka, and Ayodeji Osowobi for their roles in the rape saga between D’banj and Seyitan. Segalink also shared more light on the incidents involving the alleged arrest and detention of Seyitan by the police. He explained that the police simply acted as intercessors in the case, and that Seyitan was only invited for a written statement and was never detained.

On the other hand, Segalink strongly condemned the activities of certain individuals who tried to take advantage of the rape case to their personal benefits. In several tweets, he explained that, “the vicious and hateful approach of some interests (BMC & e-Feminist Coven) on this matter at the expense of Seyitan’s wellbeing must be condemned by All.”

“The malicious interest group released numerous statements via Twitter trolls & ghouls under the pseudonym of e-Feminists (recently re-christened as Feminist Coven) in attempts to push unfounded allegations while hoping to traffic their agenda through Seyitan’s situation.”

However, D’banj while reacting to Segalink’s condemnation of those who attempted to sabotage the case for their own selfish interests, believes that Segalink should have expose such people.

“Yes agreed but we should also call them out when they lie and go about things the wrong way, without facts Misleading the public all becos of International NgO funding and to look like they working . Say the truth @segalink,” he tweeted in response to Segalink’s statement.

In the same vein, the singer also expressed his disappointment in the way a renowned news outlet, the Guardian published a propaganda story sold to them by these same unscrupulous elements who will do anything from telling lies to misleading the public just to look good to their international NGOs and get funds. D’banj thinks the Guardian should have investigated the matter before publishing a story bordering a serious issue like that.

Which attaching a screenshot of the news article by the Guardian, he tweeted:

“The Same liars that Sold this story to look Good to their International NGOs to look like they are working. You know the truth and their Names @segalink, Call them out. Dont chicken out. Say the truth. And you @guardiannews @guardian I thought you knew better.”

Music/Radio / Watch D’banj’s Hilarious Response To Rape Accusation In New Video by RoughDiamond9(m): 1:08am On Jun 23, 2020

Innocent Until Proven Guilty – D’banj responds to rape accusation in this hilarious video.

Nigerian music superstar, Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo popularly known as D’banj, in response to the rape allegation levelled against him, says he is innocent until proven guilty.

The singer has been accused of rape by a young lady, Seyitan Babatayo. However, D’banj who initially was quiet, responded a few days back, by slamming the lady with a lawsuit demanding for N100 million as well as an apology in the next 48 hours.

Apparently, the development made the lady delete all her tweets relating to the rape allegations. However, many fans feel she was coerced to do that. This has torn fans apart, with some fans accusing the singer of intimidating the lady into silence, while others supported the singer and maintained that he has to be found guilty by a court of law before anyone can condemn him.

In a post shared via his Instagram page on Monday, June 22, 2020, D’banj insists he’s innocent of the rape accusation and also emphasized on the need for people not to judge any incident or claim based on social media hearsay. He posted:

“Innocent until proven guilty…., STOP SOCIAL MEDIA TRIAL ⚖️⚖️⚖️ #SAY NO TO RAPE AND HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATION,” he wrote.

D’banj accompanied the post with a hilarious video, in which he dances to a track about haters, ‘Olorun Maje’ off his 2018 album, ‘The Entertainer’.

Travel / Meet Iranian Man Who Has Lived In A Paris Airport Since 1988 Because He Lost His by RoughDiamond9(m): 8:45pm On Jul 03, 2014
Mehran Karimi Nasseri, also known as Sir, Alfred Mehran, is an Iranian refugee who has been living in the departure lounge of Terminal One in Charles de Gaulle Airport since August 8, 1988.

After he was later imprisoned, tortured and expelled from his country, he applied for asylum in many European countries without luck. When he decided to go to the United Kingdom, he claimed that he was mugged, and his shoulder bag stolen while waiting at the RER platform to go to Charles de Gaulle Airport to take a flight to Heathrow. Nasseri managed to board the plane, but when he arrived at Heathrow without the necessary documentation, Heathrow officials sent him back to Charles de Gaulle. Nasseri was unable to prove his identity or his refugee status to the French officials and so he was moved to the Zone d’attente (waiting zone), a holding area for travellers without papers.

Nasseri story was reportedly the inspiration behind the 2004 movie 'The Terminal', with Tom Hanks taking the title role, netting the homeless man some $300,000 but failing to tempt him to move from his airport hideaway.

Unlike Tom Hanks’ character in the movie, and since at least 1994, Nasseri does not live in the duty-free transit area but simply in the departure hall, in the circular boutiques and restaurants passage on the lowest floor. He can at least theoretically leave the terminal at any moment, although, since everyone knows him, his departure might not remain unnoticed. He does not seem to speak with anyone normally. With his cart and bags, he almost looks like a traveler, so people either do not notice him or ignore him as if he were a homeless person.

During his 17-year-long stay at Terminal 1 in the Charles de Gaulle Airport, Nasseri had his luggage at his side and spent his time reading, writing in his diary, or studying economics. He received food and newspapers from employees of the airport. Nasseri’s stay at the airport ended in July 2006 when he was hospitalized and his sitting place dismantled. Towards the end of January 2007, he left the hospital and was looked after by the airport’s branch of the French Red Cross; he was lodged for a few weeks in a hotel close to the airport. On March 6, 2007, he transferred to an Emmaus charity reception centre in Paris‘s twentieth arrondissement. As of 2008, he continues to live in a Paris shelter.

Music/Radio / Fans Slam Amber Rose For Calling Wiz Khalifa The 'sexiest Man On Earth' by RoughDiamond9(m): 12:34am On Jun 30, 2014
Amber Rose on her instagram page posted the photo [above] of her husband, Wiz Khalifa, and called him, the 'Sexiest Man on Earth'.

This sparked spontaneous reactions from her fans with many stressing that it is an insult to the term sexy and an insult to guys like Trey Songz.

I personally feel Amber couldn't find any other suitable word to describe her loving and caring husband who has stayed true to her in all these years, with neither scandal nor divorce threats - could a man be more sexier to a serious-minded woman than this?

To all the fans who think Amber exaggerated to have called Wiz Khalifa the 'Sexiest Man on Earth', well if she finds him sexually appealing, attractive, or exciting and if he has interesting or appealing qualities, then Amber was and is very correct to have used the term 'sexy' in this respect.
