Education / Teachers Need Better Treatment Or What Do You Think? by sarah12ab: 9:40am On Oct 30, 2017
Early this month, October 5th, teachers all over the world were celebrated. This day is set aside every year to celebrate this set of people that produce doctors, lawyers, presidents, diplomats, engineers and the likes every time.

Teachers before now were well respected in the society because everyone believes they are the ones moulding the society by producing different categories of people for different endeavours, but now, tables are turning teachers are no longer regarded as someone that should be respected.

For instance, a parent recently shared a story of a teacher that was beaten up by another parent and was asked by the school board to apologize to the parent and yet was still sacked.

“#SOS_TEACHERS_TREATED_WORSE_THAN_SLAVES
Please, permit me to mention names (so that anyone who wishes to verify can do that). This is to show the level of disrepute which the teaching profession has been put.
Last term (Third term, 16/17 academic session), a school (Divine Scholars Schools) in Bogije (Ibeju-Lekki local government area of Lagos state) had a mini football tournament for primary children. During one of the games, a boy was substituted with another boy. Because of the limited number of jerseys available, the boy going out of the pitch had to give his jersey to the substitute. While this change was going on, the boy's mother came to the school, and she saw her son with just singlet and shorts (as he had just given the shirt to the substitute who had gone to the pitch). Without asking any question, she called her husband who also came to the school. No one knew anything was amiss until the man asked for the games master and as soon as the man was pointed out, the parent pulled out his belt and lashed out at the teacher. Before he could be stopped, he had whipped the teacher severally. After all the oohs and ahs, the school owners came and
- Apologised to the parents
- Asked the teacher to go to the parents’ house to apologize
- And when the teacher resumed the following day, after confirming that he had apologized, was given a sack letter.
This is the treatment meted out to a TEACHER by parents and a school, all the school was after was retaining the child at all cost, even if it means appeasing the parents by further humiliating the teacher”

Another parents have another dimension to the issue, she said

“Because parents harass teachers; hence teachers turn the other way even when they see children misbehaving. Unfortunately, these parents were once under the tutelage of strict and firm teachers. On the other hand, we find teachers who themselves are lawless and undisciplined, how in Heaven's name will such a teacher correct aright?” I implore teachers and beg them in the name of the Lord, if you found yourself in that profession simply because you didn't get any other job, and you know within you that you sincerely do not have a passion to nurture children, please go learn a trade and leave the teaching profession, cause you are only causing harm to the future society”.

Like a true mother, a teacher can only nurture a child with love and not with aggression/tweetable]. It is not surprising that some of the curse words that these children learn even are learned from the teachers.

She urged school owners to invest more in their teachers and organize trainings for healthier and better outputs . By so doing, we are assured of a better tomorrow and a promising future. Another parent also on her part disclosed teachers no longer correct the students; parents are sometimes too busy to observe things that are going wrong.

"In the interest of the child both the school and parents must work together. You need not threaten your child's teacher or the school authorities”. She added that schools must also ensure that teachers are well trained to support the growth of the children. This is challenging time, all stakeholders must work together”.

Is it still possible to go back to the time where teachers are celebrated and treated right?

If the answer is yes, Then stop maltreating teachers! They should be treated well and nice.

The management of the Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, has said that it will offer free medical treatment to 2,000 people as part of the activities marking the fifth convocation ceremony of the institution.

The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof Michael Ajisafe, who announced this at a press conference in Ado Ekiti, said the treatment, which would cover different ailments, was part of corporate social responsibilities of the institution to the society.

He added that patients for free health services would be treated by experts from Europe, Asia and Nigeria.

“The experts will treat any patient free-of-charge and they will perform surgery, if it is required on any patient, and this is on the bill of ABUAD. It is going to be on first come, first served basis,” he said.

About 869 graduands of the university will be conferred with Bachelor degrees in different fields on Saturday, with 83 bagging first class.

Ajisafe said the high number of first class graduates churned out by the university confirmed the quality of education that it provides, alongside uninterrupted power supply and full-residential policy for all students.

He added that the university would inaugurate a 400-bed teaching hospital built by its founder, Chief Afe Babalola, to offer quality health services to Nigerians.

Education / Sweetener In Ice Cream, Cakes And Biscuits Crippling Children’s Liver by sarah12ab: 10:18am On Oct 12, 2017
A sweetener used in soda, cakes, biscuits and ice cream slowly develops a likely fatal liver disease in children, new researchers warn.

Fructose is the deadliest form of sugar and is far more disadvantageous to health than glucose. Scientists can now tell why this is so.

It triggers an early form of the fatty liver disease in the young ones, a state normally associated with alcoholics, which can develop into cancer, stroke and heart-related problems. The illness is a growing Issue, with one of four children now clinically obese by the time they are 15.

The first author, Dr Samir Softic, of Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, said “the disease is much more worrisome in a child of age 13, who goes from normal liver to fatty liver to liver inflammation over the span of 7 years than in someone who has been overweight for 30years.

Kids eat more sugar than adults, so fructose is a risk factor in children, which will increase their years of poor health. High-fructose corn syrup is used in sweetened beverage and many other processed foods. They are found naturally in fruits but manufacturers extract them and then take out the fibre content and nutrients to give an instant sugar rush when consumed. Experiments show mice fed fructose suffer much more metabolic distress than those given similar calories of glucose, another component of table sugar.A study published in the journal of clinical investigation, the animals were given either regular or high- fat diet and drank either plain water or water sweetened with fructose or glucose. After 10 weeks, none of the animals on a regular diet developed insulin resistance, a key factor in metabolic. Although they both gained a substantial amount of weight.

Education / Situation Of Nigerian Education by sarah12ab: 4:44pm On Sep 27, 2017
Nigeria’s population growth has put pressure on the country’s resources, public ser-vices and infrastructure. With children under 15 years of age accounting for 45 per cent of the 171 million population, the burden on education has become overwhelming.

Primary school enrolment has increased in recent years, but net attendance is only about 70 per cent, but Nigeria still has 10.5 million out-of-school children - the world’s highest number. Sixty per cent of those children are in northern Nigeria.

About 60 per cent of out-of-school children are girls. Many of those who do enroll drop out early. Low perceptions of the value of education for girls and early marriages are among the reasons. Some northern states have laws requiring education of girls and prohibiting their withdrawal from school. Girls’ primary school attendance has been improving, but this has not been the case for girls from the poorest households.

Increased enrolment rates have created challenges in ensuring quality education, as re-sources are spread more thinly. It is not rare to see cases where there are 100 pupils for one teacher, or where students learn under trees because of a lack of classrooms.

In north-eastern Nigeria, conflict has deprived many children of access to education. Teachers have been killed and schools burned down or closed for security reasons.
Education / Alarming Rate Of Illiteracy In Nigeria by sarah12ab: 3:31pm On Sep 27, 2017
The Federal Government, on Thursday, described the rate of illiteracy in the country as alarming.

The Minister of Education, Alhaji Adamu Adamu, made the remark when he paid a courtesy call on Gov. Alhaji Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday.

The minister and the delegates were in the state for a two-day International Literacy Day conference organised by the National Commission for Mass Education.

Adamu said the country had about 65 million to 75 million illiterates, describing the figure as unbecoming and high, considering the country’s population.

“Education is the bedrock of any country’s development and any country that does not educate its populace is bound to fail.

“Unfortunately, in Nigeria, we have a very large population of illiterates; the illiterates figure, considering our population, is unbecoming,’’ he said.

Adamu, who was represented by Mr. Jonathan Mbaka, the Director of Basic and Secondary Education, Federal Ministry of Education, said the federal government was targeting educating out-of-school children.

The minister said this was part of its strategic plan to reduce the number of the illiterates in the country.

“The government is doing all it can to reduce the number of children that are out of school.

“This includes the adoption of inclusive education where every Nigerian will be given the opportunity to go to school, regardless of background, ethnicity and gender,’’ he said.

Adamu commended the governor’s wife, Hajiya Aisha Bagudu, for reducing the number of out-of-school children and illiterates in Kebbi State through her Mass Almajiri Literacy and Poverty Alleviation Initiative (MALPAI).

Responding, the governor said most of the security challenges the country faced were manifestations of the level of illiteracy in the country.

“We have an army of people whose inability to read can be exploited by divisive elements in the country

Bagudu commended them for ignoring the fears and tension created by a few group of people by assembling in the state to deliberate on how to reduce illiteracy in the country.

“I am very proud that we are hosting eminent delegates from across the federation at the time like this, where there is tension and fear in Nigeria.

“For you to ignore fears that a few people cannot intimidate us is commendable.

“Our destiny remains in our hands and not allowing inconsequential elements to determine our fate is also commendable,’’ he said.

The governor attributed the high illiteracy rate in Nigeria to Boko Haram insurgency, saying that many of the sect’s followers only knew the Quran but could not interpret and digest its meanings.
Education / Honey Land Seminar by sarah12ab: 4:31pm On Sep 20, 2017
A school that takes time to impart knowledge on its staff will always have a more productive staff. That is the case of Honeyland International School who organized a seminar for their teaching and nonteaching staffs, masterminded
C.E.O Edumark Consult, Mrs.Yinka Ogunde preceded the gathering by enlightening the Staffs on a very engaging topic titled “A New Beginning”. She urged that teachers be persistent influencers in the lives of the children which they have been given the responsibility to teach and educate.A teachers work does not start and end with the school’s curriculum, a teacher can also go as far as to influence the mannerisms of the students even outside the four walls of a classroom.
Ogunde as regards the essence of value made known an affirmation to be recited and registered in the consciousness of the Staffs of Honeyland.
At Honey Land,
“We are people of value-adding value to the lives we value.
We have chosen to make every day a masterpiece and
we intentionally want to raise students that will be the best they can be”.

Mr. Joseph Aisida, a profound Educator who followed, spoke on “The Intentional Teacher: Proficiency, Professionalism and Visionary Teaching”. These concerns teachers making intentional efforts to growing themselves especially their teaching skills. He also acknowledged that teachers see the beauty in the uniqueness of each student; no two children are the same. Trust must also be built amidst staffs and the students. Aisida explains that in building trust, some students would attempt to misbehave, but it is the place of the teacher to put them in order by clearly stating boundaries which will not just allow the student be comfortable with the teacher but also disciplined.honey4

C.E.O First Royal Character & Values Limited Mrs. Bosede Olusola-Obasa, a Social Capital Developer spoke on “A Journey from Customer Service to Customer Delight”. She began by begging the question of why the teachers come to work. Most response centered on the fact they wanted to earn a living which she affirmed wasn’t wrong but is wrong . She appealed that the staffs of HoneyLand choose a faithful rather than a faceful service . As a school, appreciation should not only be shown as regards the payment of school fees regularly, but also to those holding back because they aren’t just mere students, but also their customers.

Founder of Nurtures place, Mrs. Flourish Adeniyi wrapped up on “The Mind at Work; Creating an Owner’s Mindset for A Successful Career”. She inquired on how much value each staff has invested in the teaching job, and also talked about a career focus of working to learn not earn. She said “In a workplace, there are three different persons; the Entrepreneur, the Manager, and the Technician. There would be a huge problem if these three people don’t have a consensus. No matter who owns a business, one should carry the business like it’s his/hers”.

All the speakers indeed created an impact that’s left for Honeyland staffs to run with. Basically having known now that teaching is not just about information; it’s about having an honest intellectual relationship with your students and colleagues.

Dear school owner, you too can also sign up for Edumark’s School Growth Academy in order to obtain a quality staff training that produces desired results to move your school from ‘good’ to ‘great’.
